Abstract

A foldable bed comprises a first, second and third part which are rotatably connected to each other to open as a bed or fold up in a cupboard. The second part is preferably mounted on wheels. The third part includes support means for holding it in a horizontal orientation when the bed is open. A combination foldable bed and cupboard comprises a foldable bed having a first, second and third part which are rotatably connected to each other to open as a bed or fold up for storage in the cupboard. The bed may further include means for holding the first, second and third part of the bed at about a normal angle to each other when the bed is stored in the cupboard.

Description

    FIELD OF THE INVENTION
  • The invention relates to a collapsible/foldable bed.
  • STATEMENT AS TO RIGHTS TO INVENTIONS MADE UNDER FEDERALLY SPONSORED R&D
  • There was no Federal sponsoring for the present invention, therefore there are no rights deriving therefrom.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • At night the bed is usually required, however during the day it may take space which may be usable for other purposes. Especially in small rooms, where space is at a premium, it may be desirable to put the bed away during daytime.
  • Furthermore, other furniture may be needed when someone is not in bed, such as a writing table, chair or a TV chair.
  • The present invention is directed towards a space-efficient, multi-functional bed.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • A foldable bed may be easily folded up for storage in a cupboard at daytime, and again opened up for use as a bed at nighttime.
  • When folded, it would occupy a minimum of floor space, so as to free the room for other uses.
  • In this state, a drawer or writing board is available for use.
  • When partially opened, the bed takes the shape of a chair or a TV chair.
  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
  • FIG. 1 illustrates a side view of the bed in its folded, compact state.
  • FIG. 2 illustrates a front view of the bed in its folded, compact state.
  • FIGS. 3A, 3B and 3C detail a side view, a top view and a front view, respectively, of the center part of the bed.
  • FIG. 4 illustrates a side view of the bed in its opened state.
  • FIG. 5 illustrates a top view of the bed in its folded, compact state.
  • FIG. 6 illustrates a side view of the bed in a first partially opened state.
  • FIG. 7 illustrates a side view of the bed in a second partially opened state.
  • FIG. 8 illustrates a perspective view of the bed in its folded, compact state.
  • FIG. 9 illustrates a perspective view of the bed in its opened state.
  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
  • A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings.
  • A foldable bed is illustrated in its folded, compact state in FIG. 1 (cross-sectional side view) and FIG. 2 (front view).
  • The bed is stored in the lower part of a storage furniture, with the upper part 7 of the furniture being possibly used for storing clothes, etc. Handles 71 may be used to open the door of the upper part storage compartment.
  • The bed itself, comprising parts 31, 32, 33, 34, is stored in the lower part of the device in a folded state as illustrated.
  • In this state, a drawer 34 may be used as a writing board. When the bed is opened, as detailed below, parts 36 form the legs of the bed, see FIGS. 4, 7.
  • The bed may be either closed for storage as illustrated in FIG. 1, or opened to various degrees, as the user may desired, as detailed below.
  • Notches 314 may be used to support part 31 at various angles of inclination, see FIG. 7.
  • Hook 312 may be placed on support means 53 to hold part 31 at various angles of inclination, as illustrated in FIG. 4.
  • A bar 42 with the part 51 on the furniture, may be used to keep the bed in its folded, closed state.
  • FIGS. 3A, 3B and 3C detail a side view, a top view and a front view, respectively, of the center part of the bed. This part preferably may be moved on wheels 12, to easily open or close the bed.
  • FIG. 4 illustrates a side view of the bed in its opened state. To open the bed, the part 33 is pulled out and lowered on its supports 36. The central part 32 rolls out on wheels 12. It may also include a storage volume 10 for storing clothes, etc.
  • The part 31 is lowered down and forms the third part of the bed. Thus the bed is ready for use.
  • Support means 53 in the back wall may support part 31 at various angles of inclination, as illustrated.
  • To close/fold up the bed, part 32 is pushed into the cupboard, whilst part 31 is raised into a vertical orientation as illustrated.
  • Part 32 can be easily maneuvered, it rolling on wheels 12.
  • Part 33 is rotated upwards as illustrated.
  • The axes 16 and 18 allow this movement to open or close the bed, while keeping the parts 31, 32, 33 connected to each other.
  • A perspective view of the bed in this open state is illustrated in FIG. 9.
  • The center part 32 of the bed is further detailed in FIGS. 3A, 3B and 3C which detail a side view, a top view and a front view, respectively, of that part.
  • Thus, the bed may be easily folded up for storage in a cupboard at daytime, and again opened up for use as a bed at nighttime.
  • FIG. 5 illustrates a top view of the bed in its folded, compact state. The drawer 34 may be used for writing, for example, as the need be.
  • FIG. 6 illustrates a side view of the bed in a first partially opened state. The user can sit on part 33, while part 32 is a support for the back.
  • FIG. 7 illustrates a side view of the bed in a second partially opened state. This takes more room space, but may be a more comfortable chair, with support for the user's feet thereon.
  • The user can sit on part 32, while part 31 is a support for the back. Part 33 may support the user's feet.
  • Axes 16 and 18 allow parts 31, 32, and 33 to rotate with respect to each other, while keeping them connected as one unit.
  • A perspective view of the bed in this folded state is illustrated in FIG. 8. In this state, the bed will occupy just a minimal volume in the room, so as not to interfere with daily activities of the occupant.
  • FIG. 9 illustrates a perspective view of the bed in its opened state. At night, the bed is opened into this state for use as a regular bed.
  • It will be recognized that the foregoing is but one example of an apparatus and method within the scope of the present invention, and that various modifications will occur to those skilled in the art upon reading the disclosure set forth hereinbefore.
