Description

. y 1935 v F. A. RITSCHER 2,002,616
DEVICE FOR INTRODUCING CIGARETTES OR SIMILAR ARTICLES INTO POCKET LIKE PACKAGES Filed Jan. 6, 1935 mvemua'e Patented May 28, 1935 PATENT OFFICE DEVICE FOR INTRODUCING CIGARETTES OR SIMILAR ARTICLES INTO POCKET- LIKE PACKAGES Friedrich Arthur Ritscher, Dresden, Germany, assignor to Universelle Cigarettenmaschinen- Fabrik J. C. Muller & 00., Dresden, Germany Application January 6, 1933, Serial No. 650,561 In Germany January 13, 1932 2 Claims.
The invention relates to a device for introducing cigarettes and similar articles into packages and more particularly into pocket-like packages.
It-is already known to at first wrap cigarettes or similar articles in a wrapping material which has been laid as a U around the articles to be packed and to subsequently place the cigarettes wrapped on a flat piece of material cut to size which is folded around the cigarettes or the like while moving together with the same. These devices show the inconvenience that when the flaps, sometimes comparatively large, of the material cut to size are folded down they are liable to be distorted or irregularly bent; moreover the wrapping material used for the cigarettes will often be displaced or damaged while the material cut to size is being folded down.
An object of the present invention is to avoid this inconvenience and to provide for an absolutely reliable and correct packing operation by the material being cut to size or preliminarily shaped before the cigarettes wrapped in the wrapping paper are placed upon the carton blank and that the cigarettes wrapped are not introduced into the latter until the box has been folded from the blank.
The drawing shows an embodiment of the invention by way of example and represents in Fig. 1 a diagrammatic top plan view of a device corresponding to the invention, and
Fig. 2 a package at the very instant when the cigarettes already wrapped have been introduced into the folded blank.
In a manner already known the blank is taken from a pile a and it is provided in a manner already known with four lateral flaps a a, a and a The blank advanced is seized by rollers b and passed through between two folding appliances c and 0 During this movement the lateral flaps a to a are folded up and the blank with its folded-up flaps is moved over a chain or another suitable conveying means d which is equipped with catches e. The catches are arranged and constructed in such a way that the flaps a and a are maintained in their folded-up position, viz. at right angles to the plane of the blank. The flaps a? and a however are bent back approximately into their initial position on account of their elasticity. In other words, the flaps a a are folded up by members 0 c in the same way as the flaps a and a while, however, the flaps a and a. are conveyed between catches e which hold same in the folded position. The flaps a and a are bent back approximately into their initial position on account of their elasticity so that in Figure 1 the flaps a and a are shown behind the folding device 0 c in a folded-up position while the flaps a and a are shown in the same position they had before going through the folding device.
While the blank is being conveyed it moves past a folding appliance f which folds up the portion a of the blank between the flaps a and (1 together with the adjacent portion which is to be one front of the finished package. The packages represented by the drawing in consecutive positions show how this portion is being gradually folded. Hereupon the blank has the shape as seen from Fig. 1 in the lowermost position, that is, the back a of the blank carrying the lid a lies flat on the bed of the machine while the side flaps a and a adjacent to the back are erected and the upper wall a and the front disposed between the walls a and a is folded up in which case the side flaps a and a adjacent to the back a are about in the same plane as the said wall a Now when a ram 9 driven by a suitable driving means, e. g. a crank h, is caused to bear against the blank and to push it along between two folding appliances 2 and 12 also the side flaps a and a laterally projecting, are folded down, so that finally the blank shows the form represented by Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale.
When the blank has been brought into this shape the cigarettes provided with a wrapping sheet in thewell-known manner are introduced into the said blank. The wrapped packages k are advanced by a ram m and introduced into the box preliminarily formed so as to get into the position shown by Fig. 2.
The rams g and m simultaneously move towards each other in such a way that the blank folded together and the package introduced into the same are on introduction placed on a conveying appliance n which may also be of the endless chain type and which carries catches 0. 7 By means of these catches the packages are moved on one side along a straight guide p and on the other side along a folding appliance q which gradually folds down the lid a of the blank and completely closes the package as is obvious from Fig. 1 of the drawing. The flap a. is finally placed on the upper side of the package so that it forms a continuation of the flap (1 in Figure 2 of the drawing.
The introduction of the cigarettes wrapped, into the prepared package is facilitated by a mouthpiece 1'.
What I claim as my invention, secure by Letters Patent, is-
and desire to 1. Apparatus for folding the drawers of drawer-and-shell boxes and for inserting cigarettes or like articles therein, comprising a track associated with folding devices adapted to bendup the side flaps of the front and back panels of the drawer, a'conveyor device extending at right angles to and from the delivery end of the said track and adapted to hold the side flaps of the-back panel in their bent-up position, the side flaps of the front panel being allowed to spring back, a folding device adjacent said conveyor device and adapted to fold over the front panel and the endwall situated between the front and back panels, a second track extending at right angles to and from the delivery end of the conveyor device and in the same direction as the first-mentioned track and associated with folding devices adapted to fold over the still open side flaps of the front panel, means adjacent the end of the second-mentioned track for inserting the cigarettes or like articles into the partlyfolded drawer, and a second conveyor device extending at right angles to the second-mentioned track and associated with a folding device adapted to fold over the closure flap and the end wall situated between this flap and the back panel.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1, in which a ram is provided for moving the partly-folded drawer through the devices for folding over the side flaps of the front panel, and in which a second ram is provided cooperating. synchronously with the first-mentioned ram and adapted to insert the cigarettes or like articles;
