Y. y Application November zo, 1933, serial No. 698,819 1,9 claims.` (c1. 294-104) `The invention relates to grapples or` grab hooks and seeks to provide a tool of this sort of simple, effective construction, and which is particularly adapted and designed for removing the spreaders from the forms for concrete wallsA and the like, as the concrete is poured. K The invention consists in the features hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the preferred forms in the accompanying drawing, and more particularly dened in the appended claims.

The tool is provided with a stock or handle 1 of suitable length yand which may be conveniently formed of wood. A metalsupporting plate 2 is secured to the end of the stock or handle 1 by screws 3 and a pair of cooperating grab hooks or tongs are mounted onV the supporting plate. One of 4the hooks comprises an arm 4 which is fixed at its upper end, as by means ofrivets 5, to the lower end of and adjacent the edge of the plate 2, the arm 4 extending in line with the stock or handle 1 andhaving a pointed or toothshaped lower end 6. The cooperating hook in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, comprises an arm 7 having apointed lower end or tooth 8 and this arm is fulcrumed or connected by a pivot bolt `9 to the end of a swinging arm 10. Thelatter is pivotally connected atits upper end by means of a stud 11 to the lower end of the supporting plate V2. A
heavy coiled spring 12 is connected to the arm 10, and to an offset lug 13 on the lower edge of the plate 2, the parts being so arranged that the spring, as shown, is disposed below the end of the handle 1.
The arm or grab hook 7 is provided with a rigid lever arm 14 which is preferably integral therewith. This lever arm extends across the hook or arm 4 and between this arm and a guide bar 15. The latter is held in position by the stud 11 and by a stud or bolt 16 which extends through the hook arm 4, the guide `bar having offset ends 17 to hold it spaced from the other parts. 'Ihe lever arm is provided with an inclined camshaped lower edge 18 disposed between shoulders 19 and20 and which are arranged to engage the stud or abutment 16 on the iiXed hook arm 4. In the form shown, the lever arm 14 is provided on its end with a pointed tooth or hook 21 and adjacent the shoulder 20 with aV hook 22. As most lower.
Clearly indicated in Fig. 2, the tooth s on the lower end of the hook 4t is offset to bring itin line with the'tooth of the hook '7.

Itis noted that` the arm 14 forms a combined cam lever and Alatch which cooperates with the abutment 16for forcing the hooks open against the4 pressure of thev spring 12 .and yfor releasably holding the'samev in open position.
In the form shown in Fig. 3, the construction and arrangement of the correspondingly numbered parts are the same asin, the form shown in Figs. 1 and .2. But in this modiiication, the swinging or `pivoted arm 10 is extended beyond its pivotal connection with the lever arm 14', and the movabletooth or hook 8 is formed thereon instead of on thelever. The lever arm isprovided with a curved cam surface 18 and a notch 19"which cooperate with the stud or abutment 16,: YVwhen the lever arm is depressed to force the hooks to open position and releasably hold the same in such position. When theV lhooks are opened as shown in full lines in this-iigure, the curved lower edge ofthe lever arm is in position to be engaged by a woodenl spreader or the like to release the latch lever and permit the hooks to bite into the spreader. Y
Heretofore considerable inconvenience Ahas been encountered in removing the spreaders from the forms for concrete walls and the like, since the spreaders are tightly clamped between the walls of the form and must be removed as the concrete is poured. The present improved grapple forms a convenient tool for this purpose. Its 55 Gil. V v
