J. FARBER WATCHCASE Filed Jan. 5, 1934 INVENTOR julzan Farfier 54%, M ADM I40}, ATTORNEYS Patented July 31, 1934 WATCHCASE Julian Farber, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application January 5,
3 Claims.
The present invention relates to an improvement in Watch cases, one object of which has been to provide a combined watch case, calendar and memorandum device which can be embodied in a single compact unit without sacrificing effective operation of the various parts.
One embodiment of my invention as applied to a wrist watch construction is illustrated in the drawing accompanying the present specification and in WhiCh-- Figure 1 is a top plan view;
Figure 2, a central longitudinal section;
Figure 3, a plan view of interior structural arrangement;
Figure 4, a view in perspective of a frame or mounting for rollers carrying a calendar strip or the like, and
Figure an enlarged detail in central longitudinal section of a demountable roller adapted to be inserted into and removed from the frame or support illustrated in Figure 4 and an end portion of a flexible strip.
Referring to the drawing, my improved construction includes a main frame or base 1, upon which is mounted an upper plate or cover 2 to form a casing having an opening 3 in which a crystal 23 is retained.
The base 1, Figure 3, is provided with a partition 4 which forms an annular or other suitably shaped compartment adapted to receive a watch movement 5, or the like, the winding stem of which extends through a side wall of the base and carries a thumb piece 6 in a convenient position for manipulation in winding. The main frame or base 1 also carries a separate, preferably removable, frame 7 which provides a support for three parallel rollers 8, 9 and 10. A narrow strip 11 of flexible material suitable for the purpose is mounted on said rollers, as shown more clear- 0 ly in Figure 2, said strip being provided with numeral markings indicating the days of the month arranged in conventional calendar sequence. Other markings, as capital letters representing the names of the days of the week, appear on the face plate 12 of the watch movement in proper juxtaposition to the numeral markings on strip 11.
The rollers 8, 9 and are preferably of the type shown in Figure 5, each having a longitudinally extending recess 13 in which is mounted a plunger 14 normally maintained in extended position by means of a spring 15. The outer end of plunger 14 engages or is journaled in a corresponding bearing or hole 16 in the removable frame 7. Thus, to insert the roller 10, for ex- 1934, Serial No. 705,347
ample, in operative position, the ends of the plunger 14 are depressed and brought into register with the bearing holes 16 Where they are released. To disengage the roller from the frame, the plungers 14 are pressed inwardly until their outer end surfaces disengage the bearing holes 16. The roller may then be displaced and removed in a well known manner.
As shown in Figure 5, the rollers 9 and 10 may, if desired, be provided with a slot 24 adapted to receive end portions 25 of the strip 11 to facilitate winding thereof on the rollers.
The rollers 9 and 10 are provided with intermeshing pinions 17 and 18 respectively. A portion of the teeth of one of said pinions, as 18, extends through a slot 19 in the cover plate 2 sufficiently to permit the rollers 9 and 10 to be rotated in either direction by manually rotating the pinion 18. With this arrangement, it is possible to conveniently advance the strip so as to bring any desired portion thereof or of the calendar or other markings thereon into extended position opposite the opening 3 or so as to be visible therethrough. The face plate 2 is also provided with a surface 20 prepared as by roughening or by a suitable coating to receive pencil or similar markings to serve as memoranda, said surface preferably being such that the markings may be repeatedly erased without impairing its effectiveness to receive subsequent markings. A flap or cover 21 pivotally mounted at 22 is arranged to conceal and protect the surface 20 and also the projecting portion of pinion 18 when in closed position.
From the foregoing description it will be ap- 0 parent that my improved construction whether employed in a wrist watch or in other types provides a simple and compact arrangement whereby the wearer or user may enjoy the convenience of a timepiece, a calendar and a memorandum device all combined in a single unit. The arrangement of the calendar strip is such that it may be removed and replaced from year to year or at such other times as may be desired or necessary.
I claim:-
1. A watch case having bottom and end walls arranged to form a hollow space, one end of which is adapted to receive a Watch mechanism having a face plate and the other end to receive a calendar mechanism, a transparent top cover in the two winding rollers are provided with intermeshing pinions, one of which has a peripheral portion extending through said top wall and exposed for manual strip moving operation.
3. A watch case according to claim 1 and wherein the outer surface of the top wall is adapted to receive erasable memorandum markings and a cover is hinged to the casing in position to conceal said outer surface of the top wall when in closed position.
JULIAN FARBER.
