1 Claim.

The present invention relates to article containers and more especially to improvements in the construction of cartons or packages for cakes, pastry and the like, and is a division, under I oflicial requirement, of my copending application Serial No. 556,447, filed August 11, 1931.

An important object of the invention is to provide an attractive display carton for cakes in which the contents are visible from the top and sides of the container.

Another object of the invention consists in forming from a blank of suitable material, an article container comprising a polygonal-shaped carton or box enclosed within a polygonal- 18 shaped carton, the outer carton having open sides and an interlocking top portion, while the inner carton is formed with opposed cut-out sides so that when the parts are assembled, and the cake or other articles of food positioned with- 80 in the inner carton, the whole assumes an attractive and pleasing appearance.

A further object consists in providing a carton which permits the wrapping of round or odd shaped cakes, cookies, or the like by machine and eliminates loss or damage through crushing or breaking of the products.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying claims.

Referring to the drawing in which is shown several preferred embodiments of the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carton assembled in accordance with the invention.

Figure 2 is a disassembled view of the carton shown in Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a plan view of a blank from which the carton is formed.

Referring to the drawing in which like nu- 410 merals indicate like parts in the several views, the container 10 is shown in its assembled form in Figure 1, and is preferably formed from a single blank of paper or cardboard 11 (Figure 3) that is divided by the transverse score lines 12 lli into a bottom 13 and parallel sides 14 of an outer carton 15.

The blank 11 is also scored longitudinally as at 16 to form the lateral extensions or flaps 17 which in turn have projecting longitudinally of the sides thereof, the wings 18 having transverse score lines 19 and separated from the adjacent sides of the blank 11 by a slight clearance 20. The lateral extensions 18 are arranged to be bent upwardly and transversely relative to the bottom 13 and constitute with the wings 18, the sides 21 gust 11, 1931, Serial No. s application March of the inner carton 22, when the parts are bent to assume the position shown in Figure 1.

25 and 26 of the blank 11, the section 25 having a medial slit 27 arranged to receive the end of the strap 28 which extends from the section 26 so as to interlock therewith through the instrumentality of the notches 29 formed in the said strap.

It will be observed that when the blank 18 is bent along the score lines in the manner indicated, it forms the outer carton 15 which is of substantially square configuration and the inner carton 22 of substantially octagonal shape. In other words, the inner carton is formed with twice the number of sides as the outer carton. In order that the contents of the inner carton 22 may be visible, the flaps 17 which constitute the sides of the inner carton are preferably formed with cut out portions 30.

It will be seen that by reason of the present invention, a simple, attractive, and economical display carton is provided of such a configuration as to attract the eye of the purchasing public and in which the contents thereof may be readily inspected without removing or breaking the Cellophane or any suitable transparent wrapper, since the top and sides of the article carried by the carton will be visible to furnish all the essential information necessary to determine the kind, quality, color and etc. of the cakes, pastry or the like carried by the carton. Of course, the attractiveness of the container may be enhanced by applying suitable printed matter thereto.

Additionally, the carton is so formed as to permit the placing of one or more cakes or cookies in the blank so that when the latter is folded along the score lines and the straps inserted in their respective openings, a locked connection is provided which will securely maintain the parts closed and prevent them from becoming unfastened during handling or when the wrapper is being applied thereto. It will be further noted that this type of container holds the wrapper away from the iced cake and provides an air space between the cake and the wrapping paper so as to eliminate the danger of the wrapping paper adhering to the icing, thus providing a very sani- 2 a a tarypackage for food products together with means for attractively displaying the products inastoreorthelikev A It is to be understood that the form of the 6 invention herewith shown and described is merely illustrative of a preferred embodiment and that such changes may be made as fall within the purview of one skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention and 10 the scope of the appended claims.

I claim: a An article container of the class described formed from a blank bent to provide a bottom,

side walls, and a sectional top having its opposededges spaced from one another at their outer extrem ties to provide a display opening, of a substantially square-shaped outer carton, flap portions extendingirom the sides of the blank and arranged when bent to form an octagonal shaped inner container within the square shaped container,'one section of the top having a medially disposed reduced strap extending across the display opening and provided with a notched end portion, the other section of the top having a slot for receiving the notched end portion so as to detachably connect the sections of the top, opposed sides of the inner carton having cut-out portions to permit inspection of the contents thereof, the outer carton being connected to the inner carton only by the sides having the cut-out portions.
