HOLLANDER STILL AND CIRCULATING PUMP THEREFOR Filed Aug. 10. 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 EU UH gwuwwfoz Patented May 15, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE Aladar Hollander, Pasadena, Oalifl, assignor to Byron Jackson 00., Los Angeles, Calif., a corporation of Delaware Application August 10, 1931, Serial No. 556,077
4 Claims.
This invention relates to a still, such as used for distilling petroleum, and to a circulating pump combined with the still.
In certain stills, such, for example, as the stills 6 employed in cracking petroleum oil, it is desired to circulate forcibly and rapidly the liquid undergoing distillation. Heretofore, stills of this type have been provided with a vertical leg leading to a horizontal drum, and in order to secure rapid 10 circulation from the upper drum to the lower horizontal drum a pump has been placed on the vertical leg. The pump here offers an obstruction to the passage of liquid from the upper to the lower drum and decreases the capacity of the vertical leg.
An object of the present invention is to provide a construction by which the pump may be located in the lower horizontal drum so as to leave the vertical leg without obstruction so that it can be used as a suction pipe of ample capacity.
It is the general object of the present invention to provide a still construction including a circulating pump by which the contents of the still may be rapidly moved or circulated in operation.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a form of circulating pump for a still which will have an increased efficiency over those now in use.
The present invention, together with various objects and advantages thereof, will best be understood from a description of a preferred form and example of still with a circulating pump embodying the present invention. For this purpose, hereafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings is a preferred example of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of the still.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the still comprises an upper horizontal drum 2, provided with two vertical drums 3 and 4, each in turn terminating at their lower ends in horizontal drums 5 and 6,
respectively, which are directed transverse to the drum 2. The drum 5 is located somewhat above the drum 6, and between the drums 5 and 6 there is a bank of tubes 7 which serve as heating tubes, by means of which the liquid in the still may be heated by hot gases or other sources of heat brought in contact with the tubes 7.
Now, referring more particularly to Fig. 2 of the drawings, the lower drum 6 of the still is pro-' vided with a circulating pump 8, which is provided with two propellers 8 and 9. The pump 8 is provided with a lateral intake neck 10, which is secured to the lower end of a drum 11 constituting a continuation of the drum 4, so that the liquid from the still 2 in passing through the heating coil '7 passes down the leg 4 and is directed into the pump 8. Preferably, suitable packing glands 12 are provided for making fluid-tight connection between the inlet 10 and the drum section 11.
The pump 8 includes a central case member 13, which is provided with a central curved partition 14 forming two outlet passages for fluid entering the pump from the suction chamber provided by the drum section 11. The curved partition 14 also provides a bearing 15 for a pump shaft 16 which carries the impellers 8 and 9. The pump shaft 16 extends through the head 1'7 of the drum 6, and the head of the drum supports the housing 18 of an electrical motor of any desired or preferred form. The shaft 16 is provided with a suitable packing gland 19 for a passage through the header 17.
The pump 8 also includes two discharge casings 20 and 21, respectively, housing the impellers 8 and 9, respectively, and directed to- Wards opposite ends of the drum 6. These discharge casings also include guide vanes 22 and 23, respectively, the function of which is to take the vortex motion from the liquid discharged from the pump, so that when the liquid is discharged into the drum 6 from the pump there will be no large velocity head losses.
By the apparatus thus described a powerful circulation of liquid in the still and through the tubes 7 may be attained with a low consumption of power for operating the pump.
What I claim is:-
1. A still comprising a main distilling chamber having two depending legs, horizontal drums connected to said legs, heating pipes connecting said horizontal drums, and a circulating pump disposed in one of said horizontal drums, said drum having a larger diameter than said legs, said circulating pump having an inlet connected with the leg leading to said drum and having propellers mounted on horizontal axes at each side of said inlet for discharging fluid horizontally towards the ends of said drum.
2. A still comprising a main drum and a heating system including two lower horizontal drums interconnected by heating tubes with legs connecting the respective lower drums with the main drum, one of said lower drums enclosing a horizontally disposed impeller pump, said drum having a larger diameter than said legs, an inlet for said impeller pump connecting one of said legs with said pump, and discharge casings for said impeller pump arranged to discharge horizontally into its surrounding drum and provided with diffuser vanes.
3. A still comprising a main drum and a heating system including two lower horizontal drums interconnected by heating tubes with legs con necting the respective lower drums with the main drum, one of said lower drums enclosing a horizontally disposed impeller pump, said drum having a larger diameter than said legs, an inlet for said impeller pump connecting one of said legs with said pump, discharge casings for said impeller pump arranged to discharge horizontally into its surrounding drum and provided with difiuser vanes, and an operating shaft for said impeller pump extending horizontally through the drum enclosing the pump and provided with a driving motor mounted upon said drum.
4. A still comprising a main drum, two depending legs from said main drum, horizontal drums connected with ends of said legs, heating tubes connecting said horizontal drums, and a circulating pump mounted within one of said horizontal drums, said drum having a larger diameter than said legs, an inlet from the leg leading through said drum to said pump, propellers mounted upon a common horizontal axis disposed at each side of said inlet, and discharge casings for said impellers including guide vanes operative to remove vortex motion from the liquid and discharge the same towards the ends of said pump enclosing drum.
