4 Claims.
The main object of this invention is to provide a fiber board container which is well adapted for the handling of relatively heavy material which it is desired to seal and which may be quickly I adjusted for carrying.
A further object is to provide a container having these advantages which is strong and durable and at the same time may be economically produced.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved container closed or sealed.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view ofthe container adjusted for carrying.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view-of the container opened to illustrate structural details thereof.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section on line 5-5 of Fig. 2 showing structural details.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which my improved container of the embodiment illustrated is formed.
Fig. '7 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modified form or embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary horizontal section on line 8-8 of Fig. '7.
Referring to the drawings, my improved container is formed of fiber or container board and preferably of an integral blank as illustrated in Fig. 6. As there illustrated, it comprises side walls 1 and 2, and end walls 3 and 4 disposed in alignment. The outer edge of the side wall 1 is provided with a sealing flap 5 which is lapped upon and secured to the side wall 4. The blank is scored along the lines 6 facilitating folding of the walls and of the flap.
The side walls 1 and 2 are provided with bottom flaps 7 and 8 respectively while the end walls 3 and 4 are provided with bottom flaps 9. The bottom flaps 9 are recessed at 10 to provide coacting interlocking parts, these parts being folded into overlapping relation within the flaps 7 and 8. The flaps 7 and 8 are folded into overlapping relation, the flap '7 being the outer flap and being provided with a securing extension 11 having tongues 12 engageable with the slits 1 3 in the side wall 2.
with the parts thus arranged a very secure 1933, Serial No. 849,822
bottom is provided and one that its capable of carrying or sustaining a heavyload.
The side walls 1 and 2 are provided with cover extensions 14 and 15 respectively while the end walls 3 and 4 are provided with cover extensions 16 and 17, these cover extensions being continuous; that is, joined at their ends along the score lines 6 which are extended to the edges of the cover extensions, and the cover extensions being Joined to the walls by a score line 18.
The end wall cover extensions have inwardly diverging scores 19 extending from the center thereofto their comers so that these end walls may be folded into bellows or bag folds when the cover is closed. I
The sealing flap 5 is extended the width of the cover extension 14 and has the diagonal score line 20 which permits the folding of the cover extension 1'7 when the flap is sealed or secured in setting up the box.
'Ihe cover extensions 14 and 15 have handle flaps 21 and 22, and handle flap 22 has a hand opening 23 therein while the handle flap 21 has a hand opening 24 closed when the carton or container is sealed by the flap 25 connected along the upper edge 26 of the hand opening. This results in a continuous surface when the container is closed as shown in Fig. 1.
The scores 27 at the bases of the handle flaps facilitate the adjustment of the handles to carrying position in which positon the flap 25 may be disposed through the hand opening 23 and folded up to reinforce and to provide a grip, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. go
The outer handle flap 21 is provided with securing flaps 29 at its ends, these securing flaps being foldable upon the end walls of the container and engageable with slits 30 provided in the end walls to coact therewith.
With the parts thus arranged, the container is well adapted for the carrying of heavy articles or material.
In the modification shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the outer bottom flap 31 is provided with tongues 10 32 which engage slits 33 in the coacting bottom flap 34. In this embodiment, the grip flap 35 has cars 36 at the ends thereof which may be snapped through the hand hold 23 when the container is adjusted for carrying, these ears serving 106 to retain the handle in erected position; In either embodiment, the securing flaps 28 are preferably disposed within the handle flaps when the handle is erected. I
My i proved container, in the embodiment 110 other embodiments or adaptations which I con- 5' template as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired. a
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I
1. A container formed as an integral blank and comprising aligned side and end walls provided with a sealing flap, the end walls having overlapping interlocking bottom flaps on their lower edges, the side .walls having overlapping bottom flaps on their bottom edges, the outer bottom flap having a tongued extension folded upon a side wall and engaging coacting slits therein, said side and end walls having continuous Ioldable top extensions, the end top extensions being scored for bag or bellows folding, the side top extensions having handle flaps adjustable to overlapping carton-closing position or to sideby-side handle position, said handle flaps having hand openings therein, the outer handle flap having locking flaps foldable upon the end walls and provided with looking tongues, the end walls having coacting slits.
2. A container formed as an integral blank and comprising aligned side and end walls provided with a sealing flap, said walls having coacting bottom flaps, said side and end walls having continuous ioldable top extensions, the end top extensions being scored for bag or bellows folding, the side top extensions having handle flaps adjustable to overlapping carton-closing position or to side-by-side handle position, said handle flaps having hand openings therein, the outer handle flap having locking flaps foldable upon the end walls and provided with looking tongues, the end walls having coacting slits.
3. A container formed as an integral blank and comprising aligned side and end walls provided with a sealing flap, said-walls having ooacting bottom flaps, said side and end walls having continuous foldable top extensions, the end top extensions being scored for bag or bellows folding, the side top extensions having handle flaps adjustable to overlapping closing position or to side-by-side handle position, said handle flaps having hand openings therein, the outer handle flap having a locking flap foldable upon a wall and provided with a locking tongue, the wall on which the locking flap is folded having a coacting slit.
4. A container comprising side and end walls, continuous foldable top extensions, the end top extensions being scored for bag or bellows folding, the side top extensions having handle flaps adjustable to overlapping carton-closing position or to side-by-side handle position, said handle flaps having hand openings therein, the outer handle flap having locking flaps foldable upon the end walls and provided with locking tongues, the end walls having coacting slits.
