FRANKENsmN BATHROOM FIXTURE Filed Feb. 28, 1951 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 j is ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES Patented Auf. 22, 1933 v 1,923,482 BATHROOMFI'XTURE Albert Frankenstein,` Chicago, Ill.' y Appucationrebruarycs,1931. servi-a1 No. 519,192`
` i iciaim. (01155-2365) rlhis invention relates to certain novel improvements in bath rom fixtures, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved vide `a hinged seat associated with a recess or cabinet in the wall of a'bath room and adapted in extended position to rest upon the wall of a bath' tub so that the bather may sit thereon while bathing and when employing either shower or tub.
Another object of the invention is to provide a seat which will be comfortable and safe for persons of all ages and which may` be used safely by aged people while the seat is likewise arranged to be used as a table upon which to bathe infants.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wall recess arranged at one end of a tub, or shower and from which the seat may be extended to be used while bathing Where only shower or both shower and tub are available, the seat being arranged to be folded into said recess or cabinet when not in use and the seat acting as a door or wall closing the recess when the seat is not in use.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a bath seat associated with a medicine or bath cabinet arranged at one end of a tub and acting as a door therefor, and to arrange the cabinet in such a manner that any water carried thereinto by vthe door or seat will` readily andA quickly drain therefrom.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a typical bath showing one form of the invention associated therewith;
Fig. 2 is a Vertical sectional detail View of the invention as seen in Fig. 1;
-. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective View of a bath showing a modied form of construction of the invention;
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional detail view of the invention as illustrated in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a top plan view on the line 5--5 in Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the seat and telescoping folding braces embodied in Figs. 3,
4, and 5; y u Fig. 7 is a sectional detail View on the line 7-'7 in Fig; 6;
Figli-iis a perspective Viewy of a typical bath PATENT ,FI'CE l with which is 'associated another modified form of constructionof the invention;
Fig. 9 is a vertical section vention as seen Fig. 8; and
l view of theinj Fig. 10 is a perspective View `of thefseat and folding brace construction embodied in the invention as depicted in Figs. 8 and 9.
Referring particularly to Figs. land 2 of the drawings wherein a preferred form of construction of the invention is illustrated, indicated lat 10 lis the oor of a bath room, having a wall 11 E and within which room is a tub 12 of conventional design having side walls rla'rid 14, and rear wall or flange 15. A recess 16 is formed in the wall and in this recess is a cabinet 17 which Vhas shelves such as 18, a sloping bottom Wall 19V and an open side adapted to be closed by my improved combination cabinet door and bath seat generically indicated at 20 and which isvhinged to the bottom wall 19 by means of suitable hinges The door-seat 2O includes a panel 22 and fram 23 and may include la suitable mirror 24. On the outside of the frame 23 is a finger knob 25 and rubber or like stops 26 which stops rest on the tub walls 13 and 14 when the door is in opened or dotted line position of Fig. 2 and in this position provides a comfortable bath seat. On the inner side of the door-seat 20 a rail 27 is pro- 75.r so
vided at each side of the frame 23 to assist the bather in seating himself upon and arising from the seat and this featurewill be particularly` helpful to elderly or infirm people. The seat 20 may be used as a bathing table for infants and it will be noted that shouldany water be carried into the bath cabinet 17 when the seat is folded up to provide a door for said cabinet, such water will drain down the sloping bottom wall 19 onto the tub flange 15 and into the tub 12.
In the other embodiments. of the invention ilk lustrated hereinafter, reference numerals similar i to those used in Figs. 1 and 2 will be used to Pivotally mounted on the inside of .the side walls 30 and 31 of the cabinet 17, as at 32 and 33, and by means of screws 34 and spacing collars 35, are sleeves 36 in each of which is slidably mounted a bar 37 having a longitudinally extending slot 38, and at their outer ends these bars 37 are secured to a seat 39 by means of bolts 40 that are extended through the slots 38. Secured to each side of seat 39 is a bar 41 and these bars 41 are pivotally ymounted on the walls 30 and 31 of the cabinet 17 by screws 42 and'spacing collars 43, as indicated at 44 and 45.
In the use of the invention as depictedin Figs. 4 to 7 inclusive the door 28 will be swung open and the seat 39 lowered into full line position of Figs. 4 and 5 wherein it will be seen that the seat 39 extends above and over the tub so as to provide the comfort of the bather. When so in use, the seat 39 will be retained in position by the lips 46 on the sleeves 36 which lips extend into the slots 38 in the brace bars 37 so as to engage the upper ends 47 of said bars 37, it being understood that the slots 38 in the bars 37 do not extend the entire length of said bars. When not in use, the seat 39 may be folded into the cabinet or space 17 by sliding or telescopingp the bars 37 into the sleeves 36 and then pivoting the lsleeves 36 at 32, and 33, while pivoting theseat 39 at 44 and 45 and thus folding the seat 39 into dotted line position of Fig. 4, after which the door 28 may be :closed to conceal the seat.
a bath or medicine cabinet 51 is provided and has a hinged horizontally swinging Vdoor 52 over its .open face, and a suitable shelf such as 53 within.
Each having one end pivotally secured to the door 49 may be used as a bath seat for either shower or tub bath and when not in use may be folded into thepos'ition shown in Fig. 8.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and rnodications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A bath room fixture comprising a cabinet adapted for application to the wall of a bath room adjacent one end of the bath tub, a seat member having a hinged connection with thecabinet substantially in the plane of the top edge of the tub, and foldable hangers having terminal pivotal c0nnections with the seat at opposite sides thereof and adjacent its front edge, the remaining terminals of the hangers having pivotal mountngs withinV the cabinet, whereby thev seat may be swung up into the cabinet or extended into a position in spanning relation to the sides of the tub at one end of the latter and substantially in the plane of the upper edge of the same.
