Description

MW. 1932. R. T. min; 1,886,731
HAIR CURLER Filed June 6, 1932 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 8, 1932 ROBERT r. PLAT memoir, Mrorrreaiv V HAIR. eUn En Application filed June 6, .1932. Serial No/6115301.
The present invention relates to a novel device for curling and waving hair and particularly refers to that type of curler wherein means is provided for receiving the end of a lock of hair in a manner whereby the hair may be wound around the same and secured thereon in a manner to cause the same to wave when again unwound from the curler.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a retaining member of semicylindrical form having means by which it may be conveniently assembled on a flexible wire to coact with a sleeve-like member on said wire in retaining the end of a strand of hair may be wound around the same. In order to place the hair between the retaining member and the sleeve member in the present type of curler, it is necessary to pivot the retaining member and the sleeve member relative to each other and the present invention attains this required movement by a flexing of the wire in a manner which avoids all possibility of strands of hair becoming caught be tween pivotally movable parts and thereby damaging the hair and causing pain to the user.
With the above and other ends in view the invention consist in matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the present curler in the normal position;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation illustrating the parts in a position to receive the hair;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation illustrating the manner in which the ends of the wire are bent to hold the parts around the hair;
Fig. 4 is an end elevation, and
Fig. 5 is a plan View of the blank from which the semi-cylindrical retaining member is formed.
Like characters of reference are employed throughout to designate corresponding parts.
The numeral 1 indicates an elongated flexible wire member, preferably having a coating of protective material such as fabric or rubber. Immovably secured on the wire 1 is a sleeve like member 2 which forms an enlarge- 50 ment thereon, the sleeve member being of metal, composition for; of wood with i an eXte- I v rior finish.orngcoatingsthat{gives the sameza pleasing: appearance. Secured'to the wire 1,

In this mannerrthe radially'extending arm 4 on the semicylindrical member 3 supports a loop formed .25 by the fingers 5 around the wire concentric with the sleeve 2 which in turn holds the retainin g member concentric with the sleeve.
In using the present device the sleeve 2 and retaining member 3 are moved apart as illustrated in Fig. 2, it being noted that this movement is permitted by a flexing of the wire between the fingers 5 and the end of the sleeve 2 as indicated at 7. l/Vhen in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 the end of a lock of s5 hair may be interposed between the sleeve 2 and retaining member 3 and the latter again be moved to the position illustrated in Fig. 1 to hold the hair while it is being wound around the outside of the sleeve and retaining member by rotating the device. After the hair is wound around the device the wire members may be bent as illustrated in Fig. 3 to prevent the hair from unwinding of its own accord.
Although a specific embodiment of the present invention has been illustrated and described it is to be understood that various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the 100 spirit of the invention, contemplated.
What I claim is I 1. A hair curler comprising a flexible Wire, a concentric enlargement on said Wire, and a semi-cylindrical retaining member adapted to receive said enlargement, said retaining and such changes are member being secured to said Wire adjacent the end of said enlargement Wherebymovement of said retaining member relative to said enlargement is accomplished by bending said Wire.
2. A hair curler comprising a flexiblewir'e a retaining and an arm on said retaining memher having means engaging said Wire adhaving an enlargement thereon, member,
jacent the endof said enlargement.
3. A hair curler comprising an elongated flexible Wire, a cylindrical enlargement on said Wire, a semi-cylindrical retaining member, and a radially extending arm on said retaining member adapted to be secured to said Wire adjacent the end of said enlargement.
4. A hair curler comprising an elongated flexible Wire, a cylindrical enlargement on said Wire, a semi-cylindrical retaining member, a radially extending arm on said retaining member, and fingers on said arm adapted to be looped around said Wire adjacent the end of said enlargement. 1
5. A hair curler comprising a flexible Wire, a cylindrical sleeve secured :on said Wire intermediate its ends, a semi-cylindrical retaining member, a radially extending-arm formed on the end of said sleeve,and fingers on said arm engaging said Wire adjacent the end of said sleeve.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ROBERT T." PLATE.
