UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR LANGERFELD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN INSTRUMENTS FOR DRAFTSMEN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,871, dated February 27, 1877; application filed December 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR LANGERFELD', of the city, county, and State of New York,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draftsmens Instruments, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an oblique view; Fig. 2, a central section. and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of the same.
The objects of my invention are, to furnish an instrument by which thumb-tacks can be extracted without making use of and thereby injuring the draftsmans finger-nails or penknife; and to furnish a protection for the thumb when impressing a thumb-tack; especially to prevent the steel peg from injuring the draftsmans thumb in case the peg should come through the head of the thumb-tack; and to furnish a ready means of removing drawing-paper which has been glued onto the board, and to fold, cut, and smooth the drawlug-paper.
In the drawing, 0 is a small semicircular notch, which is to receive the peg of the thumb-tack. On this end the instrument is shaped like a wedge. E is a hollow, which is to be placed over the head of the thumb tack when the thumb-tack is to be impressed. A D B is a flat handle, which may have any outline, and which has a sharp edge on at least one side, as is shown in the central section A B. This handle is used as a paper-knife, paper-folder, and paper-smoother.
The instrument is bent shortly after the hollow E, so that while the wedge-shaped end rests flat on aplane surface, (like a drawingboard,) the handle AB D will stick up so that it can be held in the hand.
It will be seen that when a thumb-tack is to be extracted, the wedge-shaped end of the instrument can not be forced farther than halfway under the thumb-tack, on account of the semicircular notch not allowing more than half of the peg of the thumb-tack to go into it. This will prevent the peg from being bent when the thumb-tack is extracted by pressing downward on the handle A D B, because the upward pressure will be under a central line of the thumb-tack, and not on one side of it, as it would be it the notch were deeper.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The instrument for draftsmen, consisting of the wedge, with notch G, the indenture at E, the following bend, and the fiat handle A D B, shaped like a paper-knife, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
ARTHUR LAN GERFELD.
