CRANE Filed March 5. 1931 ZSheets-Sheet 2 Patented Sept. 13, 1932 .UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CARLO COHEN-VENEZIAN, TURIN, ITALY own Application filed larch 5, 1981, Serial No. 520,453, and in Italy March 13, 1930.
This invention relates to cranes and similar lifting devices, particularly of the kind adapted for location on vehicles and the like, and has for its object a crane construction by means of which a crane is provided which has a small weight, large lifting power, use ful radius and height of jib when in operative conditions, said crane being able of quick and easy operation and requiring a small space when in inoperative conditions, say when the vehicle carrying it is running.
The present invention also comprises means for arrangement of a crane on a vehicle having spring suspension means and resilient tires on its wheels, and includes particular provisions for cranes mounted on vehicles of such class.
On the annexed drawings an embodiment of this invention is shown by way of example.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a vehicle having a crane according to this invention;
Figure 2 is a front view of the vehicle shown in Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a side view of the vehicle 1n running conditions;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side View on an enlarged scale of the crane with parts omitted; I
Figure 5 is a plan view of Fig. 4;
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Flg. 5' as seen from a direction opposite the direction of arrows;
Figure 7 is a section similar to Fig. 6 as seen in the arrows direction.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1-3, 1 denotes the frame of a vehicle supported by wheels 2, said vehicle being of any preferred construction as a motor driven or trailed one; on platform 3 of said vehicle, in a position adjacent to one of the vehicle axles, a crane hereinafter described is mounted for rotation around a vertical axis, to be carried in any desired operative position with the end of its jib lying beyond the space occupied by the vehicle. V
In the frame portion where the crane is located, legs 4 are hinged under platform 3, each of said legs having a screw-threaded extension 5 on its end; said extensions 5 thus a pinion 23; said pinions 23 provide abutments adapted to be forced against ground to secure a firm support for the vehicle platform. Said legs 4 5 when in operative conditions shown in Figures 1 and 2 provide a firm and stiff support for platform 3 and thus they prevent said platform from oscillating or taking up an inclination under the load carried by said crane as it could happen should the load be supported by resilient suspension means as spring axles and resilient tires of platform 3. ()n the other hand said legs 4-5 do not restrict the normal vehicle running because owing to their hinge connection with platform 3, they may be lifted into shown in Figure 3.
The crane comprises a vertical sleeve 6 journalled over a vertical pivot stud 7 fastened on vehicle platform 3, and said sleeve 6 is secured intermediate two plates 8, 8' .spaced from and connected with -each other by transverse members 39, 40, said plates providing the crane body.
On the outer faces of said plates 8, 8' are fulcrumed at 9 the ends of chords 10, 10' of a truss girder forming the crane jib and having a pulley 11 loose on its free end.
The a crane winch comprises a drum 12 mounted for rotation intermediate plates 8, 8 and adapted to receive or which runs over pulley 11. Said drum 12 is driven by means of gears 14, 15, 16 and 17 and of a crank 18 which is adapted to be fastened on either end of the shaft 41 carrying i111on-17 and extending beyond plates 8,8. 5
ntermediate such plates 8, 8' is also mounted to move by means of rollers 19, an arm 20 which carries a counterweight 21 intended to balance the crane load. The arm 20 has on each side of its web' a rack 22 meshin are soli with spindles 24 mounted for rotation in cross members 39 interconnecting plates 8, 8'. Each spindle 24 has a bevel pinion 25 fastened thereon, mesh with bevel pinions 26 solid with a transverse spindle 27 which extends at each end beyond plates 8, 8' and may be driven by a removable crank (not shown) on either side of the crane.
inoperative position as lib pay a rope 13 with and said pinions 25 are in A ratchet pinion 28.1 0
-a inst ground to afford solid with spindle 27, operating w1th a ppwl 29 to prevent the gear from running bac Counterweight 21 has an eye 30 for attaching a rope 31 which connects said counterweight 21 with the end of jib 10, 10 and a loose roller or pulley 32 is journalled in two uprights 33, 33' fastened on plates 8, 8;,
said pulley 32 being intended to receive an support rope 31 when jib 10, 10 is in its dc ressed position.
)wing to interconnection provided by rope 31 the positions of jib 10-10 and of counterweight 21 are at any time in relation with each other.
For ration spindle 27 is actuated by means 0 a crank, not shown, engaged on the end of said spindle and thus the gear 26, 25, 24, 23, 22 with counterweight 21 is moved lonietudinally in either. direction, the descri d device lifting jib 10 as shown in Figure 2 or leaving it to take its depressed position of Figure 3. The sleeve 6 journalled over the pivot stud 7 of the vehicle platform, has a flange 37 solid with it, said flange being provided with recesses at its periphery.
The crane is moved by hand around the stud 7 and it is locked in angular position around said stud as required for the operation to be carriedout, by means of a bar 34 fulcrumed in plates 8, 8' and having a projection 35 adapted to engage recesses 36 of said flange37. Actuating arms 38 extend from bar 34 for its actuation to release or engage projection 35 from or in recesses 36.
When the vehicle is in running conditions the crane is in the position of Figure 3, with the crane jib 10-10 depressed and counterweight 21 in its osition adjacent to crane body 8, 8' and sai crane is positioned in register with the longitudinal middle ortion of the platform 3 leaving the most 0 the same free for carrying a load.
When the crane is to be used, legs 4 are lowered and their end sleeve are forc a firm support to atform 3 and then spindle 27 is actuated as. above described to move counterweight-21 away from the axis of stud 6; the rope 31 is thus tensioned and it lifts the jib 10, Thereafter parts 38 and 34 are actuated to release pro ection 35 from recesses 36 of stationary plate 37, the crane jib is moved by hand around stud 6 to carr it to the uired angular position and -t ereafter it is ocked again in any desired position by means of parts 38, 34, 35.
Figures 1 and 2 show the crane in the position it must be carried'to lift a load located on a side of the vehicle 3, but of course jib 10 10' may also be caused .to project on the ve 'cle front.
To lift the load drive drum 12 and 13 on said drum.
a crank 18 is actuated to wind up the lifting rope said ratchet pinion cospindle 27 is actuate operative position,
tartan crane is carried back the vehicle axis and to move counterweight 21 towards crane body 8, 8' the jib 10, 10 being thus de ressed.
The descri d construction provides a After done with, the in its position alon crane having small transverse size which.
takes up a very small space; further the describedcrane may be easily and quickly carried from operative into inoperative position and vice versa and when carried in inthe crane has its jib in depressed position with counterweight located within the vehicle outline as required for travelling.
