Description

Wwf/Vra/ KEY CONTAINER Filed Feb. 17. 1950 l.. L.- sHERwooD May 10, 1932.
Patented May 10, 1932 UNITED STATES LESTER I.; sHERwooD, F Los ANGELES, oALrronNrA KEY comer-NER Application' mea February 17, 1930. serial No. 429,085.
My invention relates to a key, container of the type'that is carried in the pocket, purse lor handbag and the principal objects of my invention are, to provide a relatively simple,
practical and inexpensive key containerthat will receive and conveniently hold a number of keys, further, to provide a key holder A, or container that has a relatively high degree of flexibility so that it will readily flex and bend 1o when pressure is applied thereto andffurthen .to provide a key container that is constructed without stitching and without having any eX- posed metal parts.
Further objects of my invention are, to
provide a key container that comprises three main parts, namely: an envelop that serves as a cover for the contained keys, a strap for holding said envelop in closedposition and a thong that forms a connection'between the two parts of the envelop for the keys that are contained within the holder.
A further object of my invention is, to provide a thong for holding the parts Vof the container in assembled relation and for securing the keys in said container and which thong is provided on its ends with arrowhead shaped members that arey effective Ain retaining said thongfin proper position in the holder. f With the foregoing and otherl objects in view, my inventionjconsists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts that will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a side elevational view lof a key container constructed in accordance with `my invention and showing keysprojectingfrom 40 the ends thereof. v

Fig. 3 is a view looking of a container and position. Y

' Fig. 5 is an elevational view of a modified form of theicontainer. f g Y 1 Fig. 6y is a vertical section taken on the line6-,6ofFig.5.
Figs. 71 and 8 yare elevational views of the thongs that are utilized inV my improved key containers. 'v tl f Referring by `numerals to-,the accompanying drawings and particularlyk to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1v to 4, inclusive, 10, l0 designate identicalside wall members that are cut lfrom leatherorother suitable iiexible material and which members are approximately three., or: three and one-half inches in length and one inchl inwidth and both endsof said membersjare vrounded.
Secured to the outerface o f the central portionof one of these members by means of the stud member ll of a conventional snap fastener is one end kcfa .shortstrap lfof leather or analogous flexi bleamaterial'and' the free end 0f this strapcarries the socket member 13 of an ordinarysnap; fastener.
VFormed thrughboth ends yof eachvside f member l10 areipairs of apertures lhthe same being arranged` on they longitudinal center lines of said members and the outer member 0f each pair kof apertures `is slightly smaller than the inner member of each pair. l
One of the side members `l() is provided at an intermediate point with a pair of'spaced parallel longitudinally disposed slits v"15 through which passes the4 strap l2.
The vgoods utilized' for holding the case in the end portions of thecontainer comprises a thong 16 of leather or like flexible mate'- rial and the end portions 17 thereof are shaped afterthe manner of elongated arrowheads. S Portions of the thong immediately adjacent to the yarrowheads are narrowed in lwidth landthese narrow portions are designatedby thenumerallS.` l.
The relatively wide. intermediate portion 9 0 Yus - side members and' to'securely."retaintlie.\keys in the holder the arrowhead -shapedpo"rtions 17 on the ends of the thong and thenarrow portions 18 are threadedthroughthe Vopenthe apertures 14: in the side member-.310,10 which the strap 12 is secured with the end portions 17 lying againsttthetinnerfacewof said last mentioned side member 10.
- 'Thus theikeygare"iexiblyf connected to the ends of the,holderwhilernotfin-useand while beingcarrie'd infthepocket'er-purse onhandbag, said keys occupy; positions34 betweenlthe side members 10-orthe1 container andthe latter is retained in compact?formby engage ment-'ofthe socket1-3rwithrthehead or;- stud 6fsna-p fastener member 11.

When the arrowhead shaped end portions of the thong are inserted through the apertures 14 and 20 the sides of said end portions are pinched together so that they will pass through the apertures and after being properly inserted the end portions are smoothed out so as to lie flat and thus prevent accidental release.
The thongs, in addition to serving as attachingmeans-or the keys serve. toA temporari-ly tie'the endportions of the holder to- Wgether,v thus providing a relatively simple, Y A flexible connection. ings in the heads of the keys and then' through "Keys mounted on thethong in the ends of the container are free to swing in either direetion when the container is opened for use. -Thef'fkeyseontained Within the holder are self-adjusting, the entire container is con- 'structed' 'without stitching and there fare'lno metal ends or part's'th'at 'might tend-to; wear the -pockets of IClothing or thelini'ngs of purses, handbags -and the like.
Thus' 'it Vwillfbe s'eenfthatI have provided afkeyA =container that isf relatively `simple in construction"7 inexpensive of manufacture and which is very effective in fperformingf the :Eun'etionsfor which it is intended.
"It Vwill-be understood that minor `changes in the l"size," form and construction-of the Wariousfparts of my improved key container may be made andsubstitutedfor- 'those-herein shown and described without f'dep'arting 4from the spirit my invention, the scopeof which isset forth'in the appended claims. I claim as my invention:
-1. -Akey'container, comprising a pairof' 4sidewalls of 'leXible material, a strap h aving one end-secured to the centralportion o'f'one of said sidewalls, the othersideiwall'being provided with slits .for 'the l.accommodation f said'strap, said-side walls'bein'g provided in 4their end VKportions Iwith coinciding fapertures-and aft-hong thread'ed'throu'gh sai'd apertures. Y
' V2. A 'key' container, comprising-a pair 'of 'side -walls ofifiexible material, 'a straphaving one end secured to the central portionoone of saidjlside `walls,;'the other-side wallbeing providedwith slits .for the'accommodation.oi` said: strap, fasnap fastener forsecuringthe ends =of` said strapftokeach other, ysaid sidev wallsbeingprovided in their end portions with coinciding 'apertures and La thong threaded throughsaid apertures. A
"Ina .keycontainen a .iiexible side wall, a. strap secured to the Vintermediate .portion of said side wall7 a second side wall mounted for slidingy movement upon said -strap,-the end portions of both side walls being perforated and a thongV arranged upon the sliding side wall, the end portions of which thong areadapted'to be threadedthrough the openings in the ends of said side walls.
" 4. A key container comprisin a pair of side Walls of exible material, rea ily detachable means `for connecting the intermediate portions of said side Walls, the ends of said side Walls being provided with pairs of aperf tures, one member of each pair of apertures being smaller than the other, a thong threaded through said apertures and the ends of which thong are provided with lateral shoulders that engage the surfaces of the side Walls n adjacent to the small openings therein to pre- Vent the ready Withdrawal of said thong.
In testimony whereof I aEX my signature.
