Description

Feb. 16, 1932. H, lRELAND Q 1,845,793
IANIPULATING DEVICE FOR ELECTRIC .ILUGS Filed Nov. 11, 1930 v INVENTOR BY ATTORNEY i 1/7 Mam Patented Feb. 16, 1932 UNITED STATES ROBERT H. IRELAND, OF CORONA, LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK MAN IPULATIN G DEVICE FOR ELECTRIC PLUGS Application filed November 11, 1930. Serial No. 494,854.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for allowing the removal of electric plugs from their sockets without interference with the electric connections as for instance described and shown in my (Io-pending a pplication, Serial No. 387,421., tiled August 21st, 19539, and it is the principal object of my invention to provide a plug'cap with a member preferably made of vulcanized fibre having its flat base located within the cap of the plug while its shank projects therefrom and is equipped with means allowing the at tachment of a ring or link of a pull chain, whereby means are provided to prevent an accidental disconnection between member-and ring or chain link.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a plug attachment allowing a ready withdrawal of the plug from its socket and which can be conveniently attached to any plug now in use without the necessity of changing the plug materially.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a plug attachment of simple and in expensive construction, yet durable and highly efficient in operation.
A. still further object of my invention is the provision of a plug manipulating device which can be handled without danger of ex posure to electric shocks and which will not mar furniture with which it may accidentally come in contact.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be specifically defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a :material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a sectional side elevation of a plug equipped with a manipulating device constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional front elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Fig. l. is a to. plan view thereof. Fig. 5 is a clbtail view of a fibre member forming part of the manipulating device.
. tolj'erring to the reference characters in the drawingsmnmeral 10 designates the cap-piece of a plug, 11, its inner body providing a seat for the terminal contacts 12 and 13 within depressed portion 14 of the plug. The cap-piece 10 has thecustomary central opening 1.5 through which the wire cable 16 led into the cap the strands of which are secured in the customary manner to contact plates of contacts 12, 13, by means of the screws 17.
VV'thin the depressed ortion 14 the foot 18 ot' 11 preferably flat vu canized fibre mcmher is so arranged that it engages the inner wall of the cap 10 at the upper end thereof.
The shank 19 of the member extends through opening 15 and its extreme outer end is formed into a hook 20 adapted to be en- 6:;
gaged by a japanned iron ring 21, or a chain and a stop 22 on the shank 19 prevents accidental separation of ring and book.
In use, the fibre member is inserted so that its hook extends or projects from on 10 allowing the convenient attachment 0 the rinIg or last link of a pull chain.
t will be evident that a pull on ring or chain will bring disc 18 into engagement with the upper inner end of the cap and the- It is obvious that I may make various 0 changes and modifications in the general arrangement of my device and in the construction of the minor details thereof without departing from the general spirit of the inven tion and v rinciple involved as set forth in the 5 appende claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A manipulating device for electric plugs 9n comprising a vulcanized fibre-member, a shank formed with said member extending into the plug, a means at the lower end of said shank preventing a disconnection of said member from said plug, a hook at the upper outer end of said shank to allow the attachment of a ring or chain link, and means preventing accidental separation of ring or chain from said hook.
2. A device for allowing, the pullin electric plugs from their sockets without interference withthe electrical connections comprising a member of vulcanized fibrous material, a fiat base formed at the inner end of said member engaging the upper inner wall of the plug cap, a shank formed with said disc extending through the centre opening of the plug cap for the entrance of the cable, a hook formed at the outer end of said shank, a japanned metal ring attached to said hook, and a stop on said shank preventing separation of ring and hook.
3. A device for facilitatin the removal of electric plugs from their soc ets comprising a pull ring or chain link, a member of insulating material projecting into and extending from said plug, ahook at the outer end of said member for engagement by said ring or chain, a stop on said member preventing accidental separation of hook and ring or chain, and. a means at the inner end of said member within said plug preventing a separation of said member from said plug and a1- lowing the pulling of the plug from its socket without interference with the electrical connections.
Signed at Corona, L. I., in the county of Queens, and State of New York, this 1st day of November, A. D. 1930.
