This invention relates to an especially designed retaining devicein the nature of an automotive accessory which is intended to be used in conjunction with a clamp such as is at present employed on modern automobiles to maintain a spare tire in position on a fender;
It is a matter of common knowledge that there are certain makes of cars on the market today wherein the fenders are provided with recesses or wells in which the spare tire is carried. In the particular type of automobile in mind, there is a retaining bolt, a winglilrre clamping device, and a retaining nut. This arrangement is not overly secure or dependable.
We have evolved and produced a simplified protective device which is used in association with the bolt and clamping device and which is equipped with a padlock, whereby to insure maintenance of the clamping device and to guard against unauthorized removal of the spare tire.
In carrying the invention into effect we have evolved and produced an exceptionally simple attachment which may be applied to existing retaining means without requiring alterations thereof.

The invention comprises the casing or safety device generally designated by the reference character 9. As seen in Figure 2 this comprises an L-shaped part including portions 10 and 11, the portion 11 having an opening 12 for passage of the bolt 6. The

cooperates with an extension 14 on the complemental L-shaped part. These ears 13 and 14 are provided with registering openings 15 to accommodate the shackle of a padlock 16. The remaining L-shaped part includes a portion 17 and the portion 18, the latter being hingedly connected at 19 with the aforesaid portion 11. This part 17 is provided with guard flanges 20 to guard against unauthorized removal of the retaining nut on the bolt 6.
In applying the device the nut is removed, and the clamp 7 is removed. Then the device is slipped over the bolt, passing the bolt through the hole 12. Then the half section or part of the device are close together and the padlock is placed through the opening 15. Prior to locking the parts together the clamp 7 and the retaining nut 8 are of course replaced on the bolt.
This safety appliance will be found inexpensive, dependable and efficient. It will fulfill the requirements of a long felt need in this particular type of spare tire retaining means. It is thought however, that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore a more lengthy description is believed to be unnecessary.
Minor changes in size, shape and rearrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- A safety clamp retaining device of the character described comprising a substantially rectangular metallic box like enclosure open on opposite sides and composed of a pair of substantially L-shaped half sections hingedly connected together at one end, onehalf section being provided with a bolt hole, an integral right angularly extending apertnred car on the free end of said one-half section, depending guard flanges formed integrally on opposite sides of the other half section and extending ove! the open sides of the enclosure, said other half section having its free end portion adapted for parallel abutting engagement on the ear, said free end portion having an aperture for registry with the aperture in the ear to receive a securing device for connecting the free ends of the half sections together.
