Description

July 21, 1931. w. T. STRONG 1,815,220
TOOL
Filed April 4. 1930 Patented July 21, 1931 stars ATEr 'FFICE WILLIAM T. STRONG, OF NORMAN, OKLAHOMA TOOL Application filed April 4,
around the home.
Briefly stated, the improved tool is characterized by a pair of companion handle bar or lever members provided at corresponding ends with suitably shaped bifurcated jaws and these members are separably joined together through the medium of a novel operating connection which permits the members to be operated in unison or individually according to the nature of the work.
In carrying the invention into practice, I have evolved and developed a duplex lever tool wherein one lever is comparatively long with respect to the other lever and wherein a practical swivel plate connection is provided between the levers to facilitate manipulation and to amplify the various uses to which the tool may be applied.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a tool constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a View at right angles to Figure 2, the section being taken approximately on the plane of the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an end View of the short lever.
Figure 5 is an end view of the long lever.
The general assembly may well be seen in Figure 1. Here the long lever is indicated by the numeral 6. It is in the nature of an elongated bar having a curvate or laterally directed claw 7 at one end. Thus the lever has the additional function of a claw bar. The companion and shorter lever is designated by the numeral 8 and this is provided with a similar work engaging claw 9 which is characterized by a more acute curve.
These claws may be used together or separately as desired. One end of the lever 8 is formed with a flattened apertured attaching ear 10. It is joined to the eye 11 of a swivel connector 12. This connector includes a stem 13 having a suitably shaped terminal head 14, and the stem passes through a relatively 1930. Serial No. 441,630.
large hole 15 in the coupling plate 16. These details form a swivel or substantially universal connection between the lever 8 and the plate.
The plate has a hole 17 formed therein through which the main lever 6 passes slidably and rotatably. The plate is adjustable with respect to the main lever 6. It is possible however, to tamp the plate in such a manner with respect to this lever 6 as to cause the edge of the opening 17 to firmly grip the lever when it is desired to operate the main and subordinate levers 6 and 8 in c0njunction with each other.
A tool of this class is practical for convenient and expeditious use in putting on anti-skid chains and may be net as efiectively used for holding a bolt in a wheel rim while tightening the cap. In addition the tool may be employed as a dependable wirestretched by connecting the claws with the adjacent ends of two wires and manipulating the levers in a manner to twist the wires together or pull them in a direction toward each other for tightening purposes. f
In the same manner, the tool may be em ployed somewhat in the nature of pliers in mending or oining together the ends of broken fence wires and the like. Moreover, the claws on the levers permit the levers to. be individually used for extracting staples, nails, and the like. I11 fact the tool has many uses, such as will be evident to persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates. Therefore, a more lengthy description is re-J" garded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size, and rearrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice as desired.
I claim:
1. In a tool of the class described, a relatively short lever having a claw at one end and a flattened apertured ear at the opposite end, a swivel connector including an eye con nected with said ear, a stem, and a T-head, a connector plate having an aperture through which said stem passes, the head being disposed on one side of the plate and the eye on the opposite side whereby to form a loose swivel and sliding connection between the connector and plate, said plate having a hole therein spaced from the aperture and a long claw equipped lever having its handle portion passing through said hole.
2. In a tool of the class described, a relatively short lever having a claw at one end and a flattened apertured car at the opposite end, a swivel connector including an connected with said ear, a stem, and a T-head, a connector plate having an aperture through which said stem passes, the head being disposed on one side of the plate and the eye on the opposite side whereby, to form a loose swivel and sliding connection between the connector and platey and said plate being further formed with a hole, and
a claw equipped lever having its handle portion passing through said last named hole.
3. A tool of the class described comprising a plate having a hole therein, a lever having a claw at one end thereof passing thru the hole, the hole being but slightly larger than the lever whereby tilting of the lever with respect to the plate will bind the lever in the hole, a second claw equipped lever and a swivel and pivotal connection between one end of the second lever and the plate, said pivotal connection being spaced from the hole in the plate.
In testimony whereof Iaifix my signature.
