Description

J. L. GILLMAN, JR
FURNACE REGISTER SHIELD June 23, 1931.
Filed July 24, 1930 R O T N E V m Patented June 23, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH L. GILLMAN, JR., 0]? COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE W. E. LAMNECK COM- PANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO FURNACE REGISTER SHIELD Application filed July 24,
The invention relates to improvements in shields or deflectors for warm air furnace registers and particularly for baseboard or wall register-s.
An object of the invention is to provide a shield or deflector as a one-piece sheet metal stamping readily attachable to or removable from the wall or baseboard register or grating thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shield or deflector of simple structure for ready attachment to a wall or baseboard register to slip into place without the use of extraneous fasteners.
Further object-s of the invention will be more fully set forth in a description of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front face or plan view of a warm air wall register with the improved shield or deflector applied.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the deflector.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the commercial wall or baseboard register having a grating of plain lattice design with the shield or deflector attached to the upper end thereof and preferably hooked at opposite ends to a pair of horizontal cross bars 22 of the latticework of the grating. The shield is constructed of a single piece of sheet metal, stamped and shaped to constitute a rectangular, flat or' curved plate or body portion 3 preferably in channel form in cross section, and adapted to extend horizontally across the upper margin or frame portion of the grating and at an obtuse angle thereto.
The longitudinal flanges giving the body a channel formation extend downwardly from the under side of the body when the shield is in place upon the register, with the front flange 4: preferably of rounded or curved form in cross section to give a molding edge finish to the front edge of the body.
The rear flange 5 is of a shape in cross section corresponding to they surface contour of the margin or frame portion of the grating so that the flange will snugly contact therewith when the shield is attached to the grating.
The opposite longitudinal ends of the body are each provided with depending bracket or 1930. Serial No. 470,397.
end walls 66, each wall having an inturned flange f a cross sectional shape corresponding with the margin or frame portion of the grating to contact therewith, and the upper edge of the flange mitering with the adjacent edge of theflange 5 of the body.
The free vertical edge of the flange 7 has a pair of spaced correspondingly shaped tangs integrally, laterally extending therefrom each in the form of a hook to respectively engage with a cross rod of the latticework. Each tang has a portion 8 which connects with the flange bent at right angles thereto and rearwardly joining with a downwardly extending tongue portion 9, parallel with the flange for engaging about the rear side of a cross bar 2 of the latticework of the grating for connecting the shield to the register. The tangs or hooks are spaced to correspond to the spacing of a pair of Cross bars for securely anchoring the shield in place.
The flanging of the body portion makes the same very rigid and with the inner flange snugly set against the margin or frame portion of the grating provides a joint sufficiently tight to prevent the passage of air currents therebetween, preventing streaking or soiling the walls of the room above the shield.
The advantages of a shield or deflector are well recognized.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A shield for furnace registers, formed of sheet metal, comprising, a body of channel form in cross section adapted to bear against a margin of a register and extending therefrom at an obtuse angle, end bracket walls joined with said body, each wall having an inturned flange to bear against the top portion of the side margin of the register, and one or more tangs extending laterally therefrom of hook form to engage with the latticework of a register for slip-on connection therewith.
2. A shield for furnace registers, formed of sheet metal, comprising, a. rectangular A Y I 1,811,467
the plane of the plate, each wall having one or more tangs extending laterally therefrom of hook form to engage With the latticework of a, register for slip-on connection therewith. a In witnese'whereof, I hereunto subscribe 7 my name. e
