A. E. SMITH COWL BAND March 3, 1931.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ARTHUR E. SMITH, F NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO SMITH GREGORY OF-N. Y., INC., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION 0F NEW YORK coWL BAND Application filed .Tnly 18, 1928. .i Serial No. 293,649.
My invention relates to means for applying and fasteninga lamp supporting cowl band for an automobile in position over the cowl and preferably near to the rear end of the engine hood.
The object of my invention is to provide for clamping said band in position without drilling into the cowl.
The invention is especially useful on autoi mobiles in which the gasolene tank is located in or beneath the cowl but, as will be seen from the following description, it is likewise applicable to automobiles wherein the gasolene tank is located in other positions.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide for attaching lamp supporting bands to automobiles already constructed and in use.
My invention consists, among other things, in a special form of cowl band clip having a forward extension adapted to receive and support the rear end of the hood hinge and in a manner to prevent displacement of said clipA sidewise.
The form of clip which I have devised for this purpose also affords ready means for clamping said clip down upon the forwardly extending ledge from the cowl and in position where said clip will extend over and fasten the band down upon the cowl.
The invention further consists in the combinations of parts as hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. lis a front elevation of an automobile with a cowl band secured in position in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the band and its securing means, parts being shown in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the parts on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cowl band securing clip itself.
I show my invention as applied to the case of a cowl band made in two sections meeting at the center of the cowl but it would be likewise applicable, as will be seen from the following description, as a means for attaching a lamp supporting cowl band made in one piece.
, In the drawings l indicates the cowl and 2 the engine hood. The lamp supporting cowl band to be secured in position is indicated as being made in two sections 3, 3 each provided with any usual or desired form of lamp supporting bracket 4. The two members of the hood are indicated respectively at 5, 5 while 6 indicates the hinging rod or pintle.
The rear end of said hood hinge or hood hinging pintle is carried in a member 7 in the usual or any desired manner and is fastened in position upon the forward portion of the cowl or forward frame thereof by suitable clamping screws or devices which engage an extension 7 from the member 7. Said fastening devices are shown as comprising clamp screws 8 which pass through a depressed part l() integral with or attached in any suitable way to the cowl or cowl frame. Extending forwardly from the cowl on the frame thereof is a ledge 9 upon which the member 7 may rest and to which it is clamped by the clamping devices 8.
The construction shown and described for securing the hood hinge in place is one found in a well known and extensively manufactured type of automobile in which the gasolene tank is carried in the cowl.
My invention provides a ready means for clamping the cowl band down in position by simply looseninor the fastening devices for the hood hinge already described and inserting the cowl band clip or holder in position to be itself fastened down by the same devices.
To this end I construct the clip as more particularly illustrated in Fig. 4 wherein the clip portion proper adapted to fit over the cowl band 3 is indicated at ll. A forwardly extending portion from the clip l1 is indicated at 1l. This part l1 and the clip itself (l1) are preferably made of sheet metal and the portion ll has a groove or seat 12 struck up therein and adapted to receive the rear end 7 of the hood hinge so as to prevent lateral or sidewise movement of the clip. The portion l1 as will be seen, is adapted to seat upon the ledge 9 extending forwardly from the cowl.
In the practical use of'my device for applying the lamp supporting cowl band to the automobile, the fastening devices 8 are rst loosened so as to free the rear end of the hood hinge which previously to the application of the cowl band would, in the particular construction shown, be clamped down upon the ledge 9. When loosened the rear end 7 of the hinge may be lifted sufficiently to permit the clipv to be lplaced in position with its forward extension ll resting upo-ntheledge 9.
As rwill be understood the cowl band itself would be previously applied in position and preferably'fastened partially by means of the screws or fastenings indicatedat 13 which should enter the cowl at a level below the gasolene tank if a tank be located in the upper par-t -of`the cowl. The level o f the fastening devicesl is otherwise immaterial and, as will be seen, the cowl band may be made in sections thevertical portions ofV which might extend down to any desired point on the side of thefcowl. For economy in material and ease of construction the band is preferably made in two sections, however, each of which York and State of New York, this 13th day of July, A.. D; 192s. a

is shorter than is the case in manyinstances of the use of cowl bands.l
The clip being in position over the band 3 or the meeting ends thereof, the tightening devices 8 may be tightened up thus clamping the clip lldownuponthe ledge 9 and at the same time re-Vfastening the rear end 7 of the hood hinge in positiondown upon the ledge 9, the thicknessof the extension 1l from the clipy being now interposed and Ainterfering only to the extent of its thickness with the original fastened position of the hood hinge so as not to interfere with its intended use when originally embodied inthe construction of the finished automobile. 1
