Description

Feb. 17, 192.1.
N ssEs Patented Feb. 17, 1931 UNITED, STATES ALFRED w. BRUCE, or nnw Yasmin. Y;
ocoMoErrvE Application filed May 1, 1929. Serial No. 359,464;
The object of the invention is to provide a simpler and cheaper form of such extension than has heretofore been available, in'the form of an integral casting, preferably of steel, that may be readily applied to the main frames, and in addition form a support for the fire box, without the complicated cross members and bracing heretofore deemed essential. V
Heretofore members of the class described have been formed as cradles with integral transoms at either extremity of the side members, and other complicated transverse braces formed therewith, 2 The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth. V
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rear frame extension, and a part of the main frames with which it may be operatively associated; and Fig. 2 isa View in transverse section of the extension illustrating an alternative construction. V I
In the practice of the invention, referring descriptively to the specific embodiment thereof which is hereinexemplified in Fig. 1, the main frames 1, of locomotive, have formed in their rear'extremities the seats 22, for the'reception of the forward ends of the side members, 33, of the rear frame extension, denoted generally by the letter E, comprising, beside the side members 38, the rear transom 4-, which has formed in it the draw-bar pocket 5 and the outwardly extend ing brackets 6-6, adapted to form supports for a boiler bearing not shown. The side members areformed ofsubst'antially channel shaped cross section, wherein a vertical web.
7 has at top and bottom, the inwardly extending horizontal flanges 8'and 9; whereof the top flange 8 is preferably of greater width than the bottom flange 9, for reasons which will presently appear. 7 1
The extension is shown to consist of a unitarystructure comprising side members 3-3,

gether.
jOined'atthe rear end only by the-transom 4, a
and adapted to: be associated Withthe main frames 1-1 by the insertion of the forward ends of said side members in the seats 21-2,
and securing them thereto by appropriate means, such-as bolting or Welding;
lVhen so I assembled, the 'wider upper flanges 8; project inwardly to" form convenient seats for the reception'of'jSupports-for auxiliary parts ofthe" locomotive ensemble, or, in some cases, additional boiler bearings, while thenarrower flanges 9, permit unobstructed inspection-of such parts.
In certain cases it maybe desirable to have the side brackets'6-6 formed separately, as shown, in Fig. 2 wherein the separate side brackets 10, are formed separately, and'secured to the side members 3, by the boltsll, passing through the vertical web 7. Y
The invention claimed and desired to' be 7 0 1. A rearframe extension for locomotives, comprising, in an integral casting, a cross member and side members extending forwardly therefrom, said side members, forward of said cross member, being'free of integral cross members throughout their entire lengths, each being provided,1upon a vertical wall at the forward end with a seating surface adapted for engagement with a corresponding seating surface of the locomotive: main frame forward thereof, for securing 2. A rear frame extension for locomotives,
comprising, in an integral casting, a cross v member at the extreme rear end of the casts5 ing surface of the locomotive mainframe forward thereof, for securing the frames to- 3. A rear'frame extension for locomotives, comprising, in an integral casting, across member and side members extending ,for- 1 wardly therefrom, said side members, forward of said cross member, being free of in tegral cross members throughout their entire lengths, each being provided with a channel shaped forward end having, upon a side wall thereof, a seating surface adapted for engagement with a corresponding seating surface of the locomotive main frame forward thereof, for securing the frames together.
4. A rear frame extension for locomotives, comprising, in an integral casting, a cross member, and channel shaped side members comprising a vertical web and inwardly extending horizontal flanges, the upper flange being of substantially greater width than the lower flange, said side members extending forwardly from the cross member and being free from integral cross members throughout their entire lengths, forward of said cross member, each being provided, upon a vertical wall at the forward end, with a seating surface adapted for engagement with a corresponding seating surface of the locomotive main frame forward thereof, for securing the frames together.
