IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PACKING CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,538, dated J 11110 13, 1876; application filed May 27, 1876.

provement in Packing Cases for Tobacco, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates. to packing-cases for the holding of smaller packages of smokingtobacco; and consists in a combination of a bag and box, resembling in form and substance the smaller packages it is intended to receive, with a movable lid for convenience in filling and emptying the same, as will be here more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is an upright perspective view of the said packing-case comprising my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal perspective view of the same, showing the lid thereof open.
A represents the upper portion of the bag 5 B, that portion of the said case formed by the box; 0, the opening through which the same is filled and emptied; D, the door or lid thereof.
The bag may be made of any textile fabric, paper, or other suitable material, and the box portion may be made of wood, pasteboard,
metal, or any other suitable material. for said purposes cotton cloth and wood, the bag of cotton cloth being made in the usual form, with drawing-strings at the mouth, but open at the other end, which is drawn tightly over the wooden box, and over the lid (marked D,) so as to hold the same in its place, and serve like a hinge for opening and closing the same. Said opening may be placed upon either side, if more convenient.
This packing-case has advantages over the ordinary boxes now used for the purpose for which it is intended, that will cause it to be preserved while they are destroyed.
It can be emptied of its contents and refilled without detriment,and can, therefore, be used over many times without losing its strength or shape, while its resemblance to the smaller packages it contains makes it a valuable sign and advertisingmedium,as well for the manufacturer of the tobacco packed in it as for the retail dealer.
I claim as my invention A case for tobacco packages or bags, consisting of a box covered with flexible material, one end or side opening as a door, and another end or side secured by gathers and a ligature, substantially as shown and described.
