My invention relates `to a new and useful improvement in a'quick change punch and l holder therefor, and has for itsobject the provision of a punch which may be easily and 5 quickly removed from and replaced inthe punchholder l Another ob] ect of the invention is the provision of a means for retaining the punch which Willpermit easyand quick changing, m and which may be economically manufactured, and which will be durable and efficient in use. v Other objects will appear hereinafter.` Y The invention consists in the combination 15 and arrangement of parts vhereinafter described and claimed. f
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and-in 2 which, l
y Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the in`` i vention with parts broken `away and partsv shown in section.
. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view similar to Fig. 2, with the punch slightly turned.
The punch 7 is provided with a diametrical-k ly extending socket 8 adjacent its upper end and positioned in the socket 8 is acoil spring 9, engaging at one end the face of the socket andv at the other end, a locking pin 10 `which has a reduced stem 11 eXtending'inwardly of the spring 9. The punch holder 12 ispro- `vided with a `recess 13 Vc0mmunicating with the bore14 into which the punch 7 is adapted to t. This holder is secured by suitable screws 15 to a backing plate 16.
In use the punch 7 is inserted intothe bore" 14 and in order to accomplish this the locking pin 10 is thrust inwardly of the socketV 8.
When the punch 7 is thrust inwardly so as n to engage the backing plate 16 a rotation of the punch V7 will .bring 'the locking pin10 into alignment with the recess 13, at which time the spring 9 will force the lockingA pin outwardly so as to engage in therecess 'i3 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. By forming this recess 13 on the upper portion of the punch holder 12, the pin 10 serves to retain the punch inthe holder 12. One of the side walls" 17 of the recess is formed tangent tothe ,bore- 14. Should' the punch '7 become broken,
damaged, or should it be desired for other reasons to 'remove the punch 7 from the holder 55 12, it vwould bebut necessary to rotatethe punch 7 so as to bring the end of thelock ing'pin 10 into engagement with the tangential surface 17. A further rotation would effect an inward thrusting of the locking pin 10 until its outer end would lie flush with the periphery'oi' the punch 7 at4 which time theV punch 7 could be moved axially outofthe` In this way the mounting the punchin 65 n y Y the scope of the appended claim. Fig. 2 is a view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. s
`a radially movable ylocking member on said` punch engageable in said recess for locking said punch against removal from said holder; and resilient means for normally thrusting` said radially movable locking member outwardly `beyond the periphery of said punch,
into said recess, the rotation ofsaid1 punch in said holder, effecting, through engagement of said locking member with said tangent side l wall, an inward movement of,` saidlocking member to inoperative position. In `testimony whereof I `have signed the foregoing specification. .l Y .n
