SPRING CLIP FOR BELTS, GARTERS, AND THE LIKE Filed 001:. 14, 1926 ml INVENTOR. LJarence Mur' h BY p A TTORNEYS.
Patented June 24, 1930 JCLARENCE- .MUR?HY,' oa'nnrnenronr, eolvnnorrour sm t .1 163 agnum,AND-Tim ntern p Y Application filed October 14,1926. Serial No, 141,513.
The present invention relates to improvements in spring clipsffor belts, supporters and the like, and is' particularly adapted for attachment on a belt for engagement 5 with a buckle, 0p o a belt, and like wise may e used'as a hookfor connecting two end portionso'fa belt together. 7 v
' The clip is further adapted for'use as a connector for attaching thef returned end 1o portions ofza belt toithe main body portion.
Another andimportant use forthe cli -is as a connector and slide whereby abuckle may be attached in a. manner to provide adjustment for" the belt so th'at'it may be lengthened or'shortened, in fact the clip may comprise all the trimmings on a-belt. .iVith the above. and other objects in view, the-embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings. These em- I e bodiments will-be hereinaftermore :fully de- 130 two connecting end portions of a belt and attachedbuckle and provided with two of my improved clips; I 7
Figs. 3 and 4 show a front and top edge 1 View respectively of the connected end portions of a belt, provided with my improved clips'used for connecting thetwo said end portions of the belttogether;
Fig. 5 shows an inverted perspective view of a buckle havinga web attached thereto by means of one of my improved clips;
Fig. 6 shows a central longitudinal sec tional View of a buckle and attached web illustrated in Fig. 5, and one of my improved clips positioned in the buckle for engagement therewith v Fig. 7 is a similar longitudinal sectional view with thelever of t'he buckle closed down to lock the clip to the buckle; and

belt secured to thebuckle by means ofone of-my' improved clips, said parts substanresponding parts throughout the several'fig- ;ures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawings the buckle employed is one of thewell known commercial type, and in the embodiment prises a shell 20 having flanges Ql'alOn-g its longitudinal side edge and provided inter V meidiat'ely of its ends with pintlejsupportig ears 22'. v A transverse pintle 24 is supported in the ears 22 and a lever member 23 having -.6 righ angular bent side flanges, 25,. is rotata' blyf supported on said pintle. The'lever also :carries ashort gripping member'QSDfinverted U-shape in cross 1 section, this gripping-member is held against movement rel- Tim .-at1vely to the lever member, buti s' adapted to be rotated therewith. The lever member 23 includes a transverse bar 26 around which the buckleend of the web or belt 355s fastened. by means'of m'y-improvedcli'pf38. .17
The simpler .form ofthe invention is shown in Figs. ,1, 2, and-5 wherein itfis shown as :a' fastening means for attaching av buckle or ring to'a belt. In these-instances it will be seen that t-he'mainmemberofthe clip is formed 01'? a single piece of wire bent into substantially the shape of a figure 8,
with the wires disposed to forma straight "outer bar a, loops 72, 0, bar 27 formed of the -Wl-IE end portions. 11.8.5
d, and e, and-an inner These ends maybe covered with'a ferrule or can be disposed to form projections e for engagement with a buckle as shown in Figs. 1, 6 andi7. IA ring 40 is pivotallyconnected toone of the said bars, finger piece in the same manner as the secon lfigure 8 member is used asshown in Fig. Inthe formation'fof 'the clip' the intermediate '0 G barsfare made to cross K r I each other several times as'atfflg', and It, the f tension of the wirebeing such as to cause the two elongatedmembers-to engageeach other at the three-places where the 'wlre's cross each other so that'whenthe webis threaded therebetween, ample friction is "i illustrated com-- 60 as shown,-to"form a 1190 I see, Fig. 5.
provided to hold the web against slipping,
@The clip which I have generally. designated as 38, may be employed. as a finger.
and between the c r'ossed and curved intermediate bars and returned 1n position to be clampedbetween the outer belt member 7 Fig. 5. V 7
' belt as 86611111 Figs. land 8, it can also be used for I detachably connecting said free and the-inner bar portion 27 of the clip, see When secured to the free'end of a end to a buckle ;.by inserting'the attached clip into the buckle and beneath the short arm 28 of the'lever when the latter is swung I to'its open position as shown in .Fig. 6, after which the lever is closed behindithe "up-- wardly deflected abutting end portions 71 ofv the bar '27 of the clip as shown in Fig. 7.

finger; piece, and is enclosed within the loop portion32 of the belt, which ismade ad- 7 In Fig. 2, I have also 'shown :aring 54 secured to theclip by means of a ferrule 30 which provides for the use of my'invention in connection with Wider belts 57.
InFigs. 3 and-4, I have shown two off the clips secured together by a ferrule 31 and attachedto a. beltin which case oneclip serveslas afinger piece within the loop 36 Oftll belt 35, while the other section or clip memberis projected and directly en- 7 ages the loop 37 in the connected end of v the belt. This' engagement is effected by simplyhooking that portion of the clip com the like,
otally connected together, and each bent to form substantially a figure 8 and including two outer bar portions, each terminating 7' 1n loop end portions and two lntermediate members formed of'a continuatlon of said comprising two wire members piv-- loops and arranged to snuglyengage and a cross eachother. t t
