Description

Feb. 11, 1930. TOMPKINS 1,746,877
FACIAL CLEANSER Filed June 1929 /0 Inventor A tiomey Patented Feb. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FAGIAL CLEANSER Application filed June 27, 1929. Serial No. 374,149.
This invention relates to cleaning devices, and has more particular reference to a device especially designed for removing surplus cold cream, rouge and like cosmetics from the face.
Another very important object of this invention is to provide a device of the character above mentioned, which will not only remove the encrustations of surplus cold cream, rouge 1c and similar cosmetics, but also cleanse the pores, removing the dirt from the pores at the same time the cold cream and the like is also being removed.
Another salient feature of this invention is to provide a cleaning device of the character above mentioned, which will remove the surplus cold cream and dirt from the pores of the face without subjecting the skin to a pulling and rubbing such as is the result 2 when linen or tissue absorbers are used for this purpose.
Another very important object of this invention is to provide a cleaning device for removing surplus cold cream, rouge, and similar cosmetics and dirt from the pores of the skin which is simple in construction, practical, strong, durable efiicient in use and otherwise well adapted for the purpose to which it is designed.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during a study of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a front elevation of a cosmetic remover constructed in accordance with this invention, and showing the manner of grip ping or holding the same between the fingers of the user.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 2+2 of Figure 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the device 45 looking toward the inner side thereof.
Figure at is a top plan view of the same.
With reference more in detail to the. drawings, it will be seen that my facial cleanser or cosmetic remover consists generally in a body 50 designated by 5, which body 5 is of substantially concavo-convex configuration and of ovoidal outline. This body may be formed from metal, celluloid, or other similar strong and durable material, celluloid being the material considered as best suitable for a device of this purpose.
A salient feature of this invention, and as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 is the provision of a curved flange 6 formed on the rear and one side edge of the body 5, said flange starting at the rear edge of the body and tapering off toward the forward edge of the body to merge into the body'at this point. From the flanged side and rear edge, the body tapers as at 7 to terminate at the opposite side edge and also the forward edge of the body in a substantially curved knife edge 8. This feature is clearly shown in Figure 2.
The portion of the flange 6 which extends along the rear edge of the body has its intermediate portion thrust inwardly as at 9 to provide on the outer face of said flange 6 a recess 10, said recess 10 adapted to accommodate the forefinger of the hand in which the body is grasped as will be more clearly manifest during the course of this description.
In practice, the body 5 at its rear edge is adapted to be gripped between the thumb and first two fingers of the hand with the hollow portion of the body turned inwardly toward the face of the user. In gripping the device in this manner, the thumb is placed inwardly of the body for rest against the inwardly extending portion 9 on the rear flange 6, said flange being grasped between the thumb and the next two fingers of the user, the forefinger being received in the recess 10 as clearly suggested in Figure 1. This will permit of course, the application to the face of the curved knife-like edge 8 of the body to be moved across the face in a scraping manner, in a manner very similar to that in which a razor blade may be moved across the face, with the result that the encrustation of the surplus cold cream, rouge orother like cosmetic may be scraped while passing this curved knife-like edge over the face for removing the surplus cold cream therefrom. The particular advantage of providing such a curved knife-like edge in this manner upon the body is the facility With which the device may be moved about over the lines and contours of the face in any direction, taking off the surplus cold cream and dirt, insuring a thorough removal of not only the surplus cold cream from the face, but also thoroughly cleansing the pores of the skin and drawing the dirt from the pores.
Thus the device not only removes the surplus cold cream and cosmetics from the face but also preventsclogging of the pores of the skin thus cleansing the face thoroughly when used in the manner described.
The customary manner forremoving cold cream and cosmetics from the face is by the application to the face of linen or soft tissue absorbers, continually rubbing and wiping the face with the linen or absorbers, which method has a tendency to make the muscles of the face sag without completely removing the excess cream or cosmetics from the face. Consequently tl e residue of cream still left on the face which when covered over with powder forms a crust on the skin, thus closing the pores and in time thickening the skin.
However, in applying my device, the surplus cream is thoroughly removed not only cleaning the surface of the face, but also removes the dirt from the pores of the skin so that at the completion of the operation the skin is thoroughly cleansed, the cream being thoroughly removed with the result that the formation of any encrustations on the face thoroughly obviated.
It will also be readily appreciated that a facial cleanser of this type can be used repeatedly and indefinitely and that the same is thoroughly sanitary in that the device may be thoroughly washed and sterilized without in any way affecting the device of reducing or impairing the cleaning qualities of, the cleaner.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible to various changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described, and the scope of the appended claims.
Having herein shown and described my invention, what I wish to claim is:
1. In a cleaning device of the class described, a body of concavo-convex configuration and of substantially ovoidal outline, a
curved flange on the rear and one side edge wardly to provide a recess for the reception of the forefinger of the user.
2. In a cleaning device of the class described, a body formed of celluloid or similar material and of concavo-convex configuration, said body being substantially ovoidal in outline, saidbody tapering toward one side and front edge to terminate in a knife edge for removing encrustations of cold cream, rouge and similar cosmetics from the face, the rear edge of the bodyadapted to be gripped between the fingers of the user for moving the knife-like edge of the body in a scraping manner across the face.
3. In a cleaning device of the class described, a-body formed of celluloid or like material, said, body being concavo-conven in confi uration and of ovoidal outline, a curved knifelike edge formed on the body along one side and front edge of the body, said body having a rearwardly disposed inwardly thrust recess formed therein, said body adapted to be gripped between the thumb and fingers o-f'the user, the thumb of the user disposed on the inner face ofthebody adjacent the recess, and the forefinger of the user disposed on the outer face of the body and arranged within the recess for moving the body across the face, the lmife-like edge of the body moving across the face in a scraping action so as to remove the encrustation of surplus rouge, cold cream and similar cosmetics from the face.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
CAROLINE TOMPKINS.
