IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 174,306, dated February 29, 1876; application filed November 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES T. RoBrN TT, of Petersburg, Virginia, and CHARLES H. BROWN and GEORGE T. PIoKETT, of Richmond, Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oilers or Lubricators of Gar-Axles and other Axles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a lubricating device for car-axle and other journals havin g upper heariu gs, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of our lubricating device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the upper hearing or brass with the top plate removed.- Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of our invention. used in the same.
-A represents the upper hearing or brass of a car-axle journal-box, formed with a longitudinal slot, a, near eachslde. B represents the webbing, as ordinarily used in lubricators of this class, having its ends passed from below upward through the slots on a. The inside of the webbing B on each side is protected by means of an apron, O, of leather or other suitable material, also passed up through the slots a. These aprons protect the webbing from wear by keeping it'away from con tact with the journal, and these aprons are perforated to allow the oil to pass through from the webbing to the journal.v The webbing B is held by means of a weight, D, restin g in the loop thereon, from being drawn up Fig. 4 showsa weight by the journal, which often happens, espe- Fig. 4, rounded or oval upon its under side, and provided with arms d d, projecting at each end on both sides, to hold it in place on the webbing.
The top of the brass or upper hearing A is formed with recesses or chambers E, from each of which a passage, 1), leads downward, to allow the oil drawn up by the webbing into said chambers to pass down onto the journal.
The brass A is covered by a cast-iron top, G, having shoulders e c at the ends on the under side, to fit corresponding shoulders on the brass. Across the upper surface of the top plate G is a groove, h, to fit over a corresponding tongue or flange in the roof of the journal-box.
Our invention may be used in car-axle journal-boxes, and for any axle or shaft journals.
Having thus fully described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The perforated leather aprons O G, in (ornbination with the webbing B- and brass or bearing A, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. A weight or weighted plate, D, in combination with the webbing B and brass or bearing A, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The brass or bearing A, provided with chambers E in its upper surface, and passages 12 leading therefrom, in combination with the webbing B and the, top G, having crossgroove -h in its upper surface, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
