3515 abhor/nu; (6231/ Patented Dec. 3, 1929 JACOB PODELL, OF MOUNT VERNON, AND VTILLI-AM GONESCU, OE-BROQKLYN, NEW YORK GOLLAPSIBLE BOX Application filed November Our invention relates to improvements in cardboard boxes such as are adapted for the shipment and carrying of cloaks and suits, and more particularly has reference to a collapsible form of box adapted to be folded flat and easily and quickly formed and interlocked in form for use.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Fig'l illustrates either the upper or lower part of such a box, embodying an application of our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same in blank form prior to folding and interlocking.
3 indicates the bottom of the box, 4, 5, the sides thereof, and 6, 7, the ends thereof. At each corner between the side and end portions are substantially rectangular portions 8, 9, separated by a score line 10, the portion 8 being cut away forming three sections as shown at 11, 12, and 13, the section 12 being preferably scored as indicated at 12. The ends 6, 7, are also preferably provided with flaps 14, having slots 15. The corner pieces are preferably stitched or otherwise secured to the end pieces 6, 7, as indicated at 16, so that when. folded flat, the sides 4, 5, overlay the bottom 3, and the ends 6, 7, project longitudinally.
In order to form and interlock the box, the sides 4, 5, are lifted substantially vertically, thereby at the same time lifting the ends 6, 7 vertically, and the flaps 14 being secured substantially at the center, as indicated at 17, to the end pieces 6, 7, are in position for engagement with the corner pieces 8, 9. The end sections 11, 13, of the corner pieces 8, pass beneath the flaps 14, while the sections or tongues 12 project vertically outside of the same, or the ends of said tongues 12 may be slipped through the slots 15, thereby tucking the ends beneath the flaps 14, the score lines 12- facilitating this operation without breaking up the surface of the cardboard. The divisional lines in the drawings represent score lines, except as indicated at 18, where the cciginer pieces are severed from the end pieces, 6,
From the foregoing, it will be readily observed that a great number of boxes of the character described may be carried in stock,

piled in flat position, one upon the other, until required, when, by a very simple and speedy movement in lifting the sides and ends, the same may be quickly and easily interlocked, forming a complete rectangular box-like chamber which may be used either for the bottom or cover of the box, the covers of course being slightly oversized to telescope or slide over the bottom portion.
Of course it will be understood that various modifications may be made in the construc tion and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
We claim 1. A collapsible box of the class described comprising a rectangular central portion and rectangular side and end portions, rectangular corner portions hinged to the ends of said side portions and severed from said end portions, said corner portions scored diagonally from corner to corner and having three separate projections extending outwardly from opposite sides when the blank of said box is flat, flaps extending from said end portions between said corner portions adapted to be overlaid thereupon and secured thereto at the center, the outer two of said corner projections being adapted to engage beneath said flap, and the center one of said corner projections being adapted to engage outside of said flap means for securing each corner portion at top and bottom to one side of said end portion, said central section of said corner portion passing through said flap.
2. A box of cardboard or similar material comprising a bottom, side walls, and end walls, the end walls having turned in lips at their upper edges with horizontal slits therein and bearing against the inner sur faces of said end walls, the side walls having end flaps overlapping the inner surfaces of the end walls, each of said flaps having two vertical slits extending downwardly from their upper edges at distances from the corresponding side walls, said flaps having inclined fold lines beneath both vertical slits and extending from the top to the bottom of the flaps, the portions of each flap at the outer sides of said slits extending upwardly beneath said lip, and the portion of said flap between said vertical slits extending upwardly over the lower edge of said lip and through said horizontal slit behind the same, and securing means engaging through said end walls, lips and adjacent portions of said flaps to clamp the lips over the flap.
In testimony whereof we hereunto afiix our signatures.
JACOB PODELL. WILLIAM CONESGU.
