WEATHER STRIP.

The present invention pertains to a novel Weatherstrip designed for use in windows of the sliding sash type.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a construction of this character which not only serves as a Weatherstrip but also as a means for holding the sash in elevated position, so that sash weights are not necessary.
The device consists essentially of a strip of sheet metal bent upon itselfand inserted in the ways of the sash in such a manner as to engage the longitudinal edges of the sash and the adjacent bottoms of the ways. The strip is obviously of a two-ply character with a spring action therebetween due to the bend in the metal, and one of these plies has a tendency to move into the frame opening. It thus bears against the adjacent edge of the sash and forms a weather seal, and where not covered by the sash, it springs into the frame opening and thus supports the sash in an elevated position.
The invention is fully disclosed by way of example in the following description and in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary horizontal section of a window construction according to the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the strip.
Reference to these views will now be made by use of like characters which are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout. In Figure 1 is illustrated a side 1 of a window frame having three parallel channels 2,
3 and l formed therein. The channels 2, and 4 contain moldings 5 and 6 respectively, the former being covered by a facing 7 while the latter projects somewhat beyond the face of the frame side 1. The intermediate channel 3 receives a parting strip 8 in a loose or floating manner and also projecting beyond the inner face of the frame side 1. In this manner the window frame is divided into two adjacent ways 9 and 10, the former being located between the facing 7 and the strip 8 and the latter between the strip 8 and the molding 6.

tending the entire length thereof, is inserted a strip of sheet metal bent upon itselfto'form two plies 11 and 12. Along the bent edge 13, the double strip may be bent twice at right angles as indicated by the numerals 14 and 14:,for insertion alongside and behind the strip 5 or 8, as the case may be. The bottom ply 12 engaging the bottom of the way need the ply 11 tends to move into the window frame opening where not engaging the longitudinal edge of the sash frame 16 inone of the ways, the ply 11 is moved into the'fr'ame opening and-is bent somewhat beneath the lower edge of the sash whereby to support the same. Due to this action, no sash weights are necessary to maintain the sashin an elevated position. i I
Where the Weatherstrip is engaged by the sash, the plies 11 and 12 are brought together as shown in Figure 1 and the strip is thereby expanded transversely. The lip 15 is thus caused to bear against the floating strip 8 which in turn is caused to bear against the other Weatherstrip, whereby an effective seal is formed at the strip 8. In like manner the bent portion 14 is caused to bear against the adjacent molding strip 5, so that a seal is formed at this point as well. It will now be apparent that the strip seals the sash against leakage around the edges thereof when the sash is in closed position.
This construction further permits removal of the moldings 5 and 6 without disturbing the weatherstrips;
