The present invention relates 'to type carrying sectors for printing'1nechan1sms, such for example as operate through the use ot perforated cards as in printing tabulating More specifically the invention relates to a novel alphabetical type sector for positioning the typein printing position in accordance with perforations in a card representing the letter or letters of the alphabet to be printed. r
Some of the objects of the present invention are to provide an improved type carrying sector for printing tabulator's or any other machines wherein a unit of th1s character may be applicable; to provide a control for a type sector whereby a maximum A number of type are carried by the sector and brought to, printing position with a minimum of sector movement; to provide a type sector control whereby type representing all the letters of the alphabet can be set in printing position respectively by twelve control stops; to provide a type sector control consisting of a relatively small number of control members for positioning a relatively large number of type; to provide a type sector control whereby one set of sector control members can be employed to pos1 tion two groups of type, both groups together forming a complete alphabet; andto provide other improvements as willher'emafter appear.

Referring to the drawings, one form of the present invention comprls'es a type seetor 10 pivoted to a fixed pivot 11 and carrying a plurality of type 12 whrchareto be brought into operative relation with a platen 13 about which the paper to rece ve the impression passes as Wlll be understood. The type printing takes place by the operation of a pivoted hammer 14 striking the positioned type when the hammer latch 15 is released to permit the hammer spring 16 to come into action. The latch 15 is setfor releasing by a pivoted Iatchpper'ating bar 17 which is arranged to be shifted toset position by the rocking movement of a pivoted bell crank 18', the long arm of which extends into the path of a cam 20 on the sector 10. The hammer release and restoring mechanism comprises a bail 19, a crank arm 21, a shaft 22 on which the bail and crank are fastened, and a retractor link 23, which latter connects to an arm 24 fast to the shaft 25 and which also carries one end of a link 26. The other end of the link 26 is pivoted to an arm 27 which has a rod 28 to engage and return the sector 10 after a printing operation. A spring 30 connects an extension 31 of the sector 10 with a fixed part 32 whereby the spring 30 throws the sector to operative position when it is re leased. The details of the hammer release and restoring mechanism are referred to more or less generally because they are of the type shown in Patent No. 1,245,502, and have no specific bearing upon the present invention. That is to say, the sector invention herein described might be employed with various other hammer adjuncts and perform as satisfactorily as with those here shown by way of example.
The type 12 are mounted upon the sector 10 which is substantially of quadrant shape so that all of the type can be brought to proper printing position in accordance with the movement of the sector. In the present instance the type have alphabetical characters and the arrangement'of them is preferably a' group one rather than a consecutive one. Thus one group beginning with the letter A and ending with letter L comprises the even number type, while the other group from letter M to Z comprises the odd number type; for example, beginning with the free end of the sector, the second, fourth,
sixth, etc. type carry respectively the characters A, B, C, etc., while the first, third, fifth, etc. type carry respectively the characters M, N, O, etc.
For the purpose of locating the sector 10 so that the selected type is in printing position with respect to the platen 13, a plurality of stop pins 33 are provided and lo-' cated below but in the plane of movement of a stop lug 34 carried by the sector 10. In the present instance there are eleven pins 33 and one pivoted'shutter stop 35, the latter being normally engaged by the lug 34 to hold the sector 10 in its initial non-printing position. The pins 3.3 are raised into the path of the lug 34 by the action of an analyzing unit operating on a card perforated in a predetermined is shown-and described in U. S. Letters Patent N02 1,236,481 1- there is a lug46 In order to control the sector 10 for the two letter groups, the stop lug 34 projects from. a keeper 36 pivoted at 37 to the sector 10 and rovided with an offsetshoulder 38 arrange to be engaged by a heel latch 40. This latch 40 is pivoted at 41 to the heel of the sector and has stepped latch faces 42 and 43 for separately engaging the shoulder 38 according to whether one or the other face is in use as the retaining latch. The other end of the latch 40 is connected by a spring 44' with a hook extension 45 laterally pro'ecting from the keeper 36 so that the late 40 is yieldably held in latched position. At the opposite end of the keeper 36 which serves as a stop to limit themovement of the keeper by abutting a stop pin 47 on the fixed frame 48.
' With the shoulder 42'of the heel latch 40 in 7 db 40 an it engagement with the off-set shoulder 38' of the keeper 36 as shown in Fig. 1, the type sector will be held in its non-printing pos1- tion uponforward movement of the rod 28.
The two latch faces '42 and 43 are provided so that the sector 10 can have two fixed initial positions, one for each type group, changing from-one latch position to the ot er the group change can be made at will. Thus 'as shown the latch face 42 is. latched over thekeepershoulder 38 and the type sector in the initlal but non-printing position of-the group beginning with A, but

Since the shutter 35 remains stationary the lug 34 is not released and at the end of the cycle the restoring link 26 brings the sector heel back to relatch the shoulder 38 with the face 42. Now if type N is to'be set up the card will have the perforation necessary to opcrate release pin 50 plus a perforation in the location necessary 33 and as this latter is raised it'shiftsthe shutter 35 to release the lug 34 of the keeper 36. The pin 50 in the meantime has changed the latch 40 so that its face 43 will be in a position to cooperate with the shoulder 38 and conse uently when the sector swings unspring 30 until the lug 34' abuts the set p n printing 13. Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. In a machine of theprinting tabulator type operated by a perforated card, a platen, a type sector arranged to swing intooperative relation to said platen, two groups of type carried by said sector, a pluralityof stop pins less in number than the number of type arranged to be operated in accordance with the perforations in a card. a lug adjustably carried by said sector and located to intercept any set stop pin, ineans engaging said lug to hold saidsector in an initial position, and means for changing the relation between said lug and said sector to vary the initial position of said sector whereby the printing position of said type is changed from one group to another.
2. In a machine of the printing tabulator type operated by a perforated card, a platen, a type sector arranged to swing into operative relation to said platen, two groups of type carried by said sector, a plurality of stop pins less in number than the number of type arranged to be operated in accordance with the perforations in a card, a lug pivoted to said sector and located to intercept any set stop pin, means engaging said lug to hold said sector in an initial position, and means for changing the relation between said lug and said sector. to vary the initial position'of said sector whereby the printing position of said type is changed from one group to the other.

In a machine of the printing tabulator type operated by a perforated card, a platen, a type sector arranged to swing into operative relation to said platen, two groups of type carried by said sector, a plurality of stop pins less in number than the number of type arranged to be operated in accordance with the perforations in a card, a lug pivoted to said sector and located to intercept any set stop pin, means engaging said lug, means including alatch pivoted to said sector for changing the relation between said lug and said sector to vary the initial position of said sector whereby the printing position of said type is changed from one group to the other, and means controlled by a perforated card for automatically operating said latch.
