L. ZADAY CHAIR 3 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Feb. 24, 1927 Patented Feb. 19, 1929.
UNITED STATES LOUIS ZADAY, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
CHAIR.
Application filed February 24, 1927. Serial No. 170,660.
My invention is a chair of the reclining type, suitable for use of an invalid.
An object of my invention isthe construcwiou of chair of the reclining type in which he back may be hinged back to various anles, or to a horizontal position when the chair is used a bed, and the chairis provided with a sliding foot rest which is housed underneath the seat and may be drawn. out to form either a foot rest when the back is in an upright or slightly inclined position, or by turning the seat cushion over the foot rest and shifting the bolster the chair may be converted into a bed.
i-inother object of my invention is in the device for raising and lowering the back and in the manner of arranging the cushions so th they may be shifted from the position to u forming a chair cushion to that forming a bed mattress.
. provide-u with arm rests covers, such rests having rer c ntaeles in which various lvlv chair is havir g' hi; 7 d
movable trays o 11 articles may be placed.
My invention is illustrated in the accomdrawings, in which:
s a perspective view of my'chair k in the upright position.
with the b Figure 2 is a perspective view of the chair withthe back slightly reclined and with the foot rest pulled out, the cushion being 1' ed downwardly on the foot rest.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 4ll of 3 in the dire lion of the arrows.
Figure 6 is a transverse vertical section taken substantially on the line 66 of Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 7 is a perspective detail of the lifting rods for supporting and manipulating the reclining back.
The main body of the chair structure is constru ted substantially as follows:
t is provided with front and back posts 1 to which are attached a rear board 2 and Wall boards 3. There is also a suitable base board t secured to each of the legs and casters 5 secured thereto, the casters preferably being centered underneath the posts. Side rails 6 are secured to the posts on each side, these being braced by a strip 7, and inner boards 8 and 9 extend upwardly from the rails 6,
these latter being on the inside structure of the chair. A shelf board 10 extends lengthwise of the chair on each side and above this is extended an arm rest board 11. Thus between the wall board 3, the shelf board 10 and the arm rest board 11, there is formed a hollow space in which is fitted a removable tray 12. Arm rest covers 13 are secured to the wall board by hinges 14 and may fold outwardly to allow access to the tray. The front part of the arm structure has an inclined board 15 and the back of the arm portion has a board 16 forming a closure. The front part 17 of the supporting structure is also closed. Tn constructing my chair I preferably cover all the exposed wood work with some covering material to give a better appearance and so that expensive lumber will not be required.
A fixed mattress 18 is connected to the chair structure, there being a webbing 19 of a suitable character connected to the opposite side wallsof the chair and also to the back structure.
The slidable foot rest is constructed as follows:
A box like structure 20 is supported on casters 21 so that it may be slid in and out of the front of the chair, and at the lower part has side recesses 22, there being a pro- 'ecting upper part 23 which fits over the side rails G. Projecting lugs 24:, secured to the back of the box structure, engage the front and back legs and limit the outward and inward movement of the foot rest. This foot rest structure is provided with a bedding or mattress 25, the top cover of the mattress preferably being connected to and harmonizing with the material formin g a cover for the box like foot rest.
The back 26 is formed of a wide board and is hinged, as at 27, to the rear board 2. There are a pair of'slots 28 in this board and a cross shaft 29 secured in the structure of the back extends from one slot to the other and has a pair of arms 30 rigidly connected thereto. These arms are provided with a series of notches 01 to engage the pins 32, the pins being secured in a recess 33 in the arm rest. To each end of the arms is pivotally connected a loose link 34 to allow a person to manipulate the arms, and such loose links rest between the two pins 35 in the recess 33. The links are hidden when the covers 18 are folded closing the trays. To manipulate the (iii back, presuming the back is in the straight up position, in which case one of the notches near the rod 29 would be engaged on the pin hence by pulling on the links and then swinging either one of the arms in an upward direction, the notch may be disengaged and the back dropped down slightly into an inclined position such as shown in Fi 2, or a horizontal position as shown in Figs. e and 5. These arms 30 are housed in the recess 33 so that they do interfere with the covers 13 of the arm re s.
The upholstery is constructed SUbSttll'ltlilily as follows:
The baclr is provided with an u phoistery back structure 36 which is preferably made up it-h a spring backing with suitable padding and the like, and terminates in a square base 37. This back upholster has lateral cut out parts 38 to it over the ends of the arm rests when the back is in a. vertical position, or slightly inclined position. A seat cushion 39 is formed somewhat as a mattress and upholstered on both sides and is secured at its front portion to the fixed mattress 18 by a hinged connection 410, this hinge connection being by means of leather or fabric type of hinge. Thus the seat cushion may be positioned as shown in Fig. 1, re ting on top of the mattress 18, in which case the top or the cushion is near the top of the arm rests, or it may be swung outwardly from the chair structure and rest on top of the foot rest when this is pulled outwardly into the position shown in Fig. 2.
A bolster 11, preferably formed square, fits between the inner part of the chair cushion, when the structure is used as chair, and between the upholstery of the back, as indicated in Fig. l. i /hen the chair is ad justed, as in Fig. 2, to form a reclining chair the holster rests on top oi v the fined mattress l8 and against the u] )hoh-;tery oi? the chair back and thus gives a support for a person at the small of the back. When the hack of the chair fully reclined into the horizontal as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the bolster lits between the inner end 12 of the fixed mattress 18 and the base 37 of the back upholstery. Thus my chair forms a bed with a horizontal cushion or mattress surface from end to end, sue-ii cushioning or mattressing being formed b I 36, the bolster tl, the lined mattress 18 and the inverted seat cushion it will be noted that when the chair is transformed into a bed that there is no support for the head, that is the upper part of the back, but there is no danger of the bed tipping over in this direction as the foot rest is a heavy structure and the eicension part engages the upper surface of the side rails 6 and, thereifin'e, holds the front part of the chair to the lioor and prevents tilting of the device even should comparatively heavy weight be placed on the head of the bed.
Various changes may be made in the prin ciples of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof, as set forth in the description, drawings and claim.
1 claim:
A chair comprising in combination a chair body having a hinged back and aslidable foot rest fitting underneath the chair body and extensible in front of the chair body, a fixed mattress in the chair body, upholstery on the chair back, a seat cush on on the lined inattress, a bolster titted between the seat cushion and the lower part of the baci-I upholstery when the back is in an upright position, means to support the back in a reclined horizontal position, said seat cushion fitting on the foot rest when extended and the bolster fitting between the inner end of the fixed inattress and the lower end of the back upholstery, the bacl: upholstery, the bolstenthe fixed mattress and the seat cushion forming a bed surface In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.

LOUIS ZADAY.
