-- cnn'rnmoeen Hrn-oAs'rIne MACHINE AND mom.
Application filed November avoiding the tendency; of the mold to move longitudinally. By preference, I employ a steel mold, the outer wall of which conforms substantially to the inner conformation of the mold andwhich is formed without the usual radially extending flanges at the end of the mold, though this feature of myconstruction forms the subject matter of a sep a,
rate application, filed November 6, 1926, Serial Number 146,612. By preference also I employ in my construction, as 'a means forrotating the mold, a driving ring loosely,
connected to the end of the mold and independently supported, a feature which forms the subject matter of my co-pending application, filed' November 23, 1926', Serial Number' 150,207.
The nature ,of my present invention will be best understood asdescribed in connection with the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a'longitudinal section on the angling lines 11 of Fig. 2, and a Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2--.2 of Fig. 1. I
A indicates the mold, having a bell end A and a spigot end A. A. indicates the butt end of the bell of the mold, which is formed with a packing groove, indicated at a and isinteriorly formed to provide a core-seat, as indicated at A. A A indicate notches formed in the core seat extension of the mold end, in which also are formed key seats, indicated at A, for the use of keys employed as, 1e2s. 'Serial no. 150,208.
ancl'F indicate respectively the lower and upper sections of the casing, in which the mold revolves supported on rollers, indicated at O, 0.. G, G are outer and inner end walls over which the drum B extends and with which, by means of' packing rings, indicated at 9, it forms a water tight joint. H indicates an end wall at the other en of .the water jacket casing, wit-l1 which, and a part to be described, packing rings h, h form water tight joints. I indicates an end wall at the right hand end of the casing, which is formed with an inwardly extending flange 1h J, J are shafts supported on the walls H wheel K a shouldel' K and an outwardly.
extending flange K extending around the buttend A of the bell end of the mold, with which, by means of the packing k it 'forms a water tight joint. The driving ring is also formed with a downwardly extending flange K, which abuts against the thrust ringvL, which rests in turn against the in-v side of the flange P. N is a ring secured to the end of the ring K by bolts, indicated at- N and formed with inwardly projecting dogs M which extend into the radial notches A in the end of the .mold. The ring has also an extension M which rests against the outside of the flange I P is a gear wheel engaged with the gear K and by means of which the ring and mold are rotated.
The essential feature of my invention is to provide means whereby the mold in its 'as-' sembly with the-water jacketed casing will be so constructed that the pressure of the water in the casing will be exerted equally in both directions along the mold, so as to avoid any tendency to movethe mold 1on-' gitudinally. In the construction illustrated, it is obvious that the diameter of the butt end to hold the core in position. B indicates a A of the mold and the diameter ofthe drum flange secured to the spigot end of-the mold b screws indicated at C and having a drumli (e extension B in which are formed packing-ring seats ,-indicated at 6 The diameter of the drum B is, as shown, the same as the outer diameter of the but-tend A of the mold. D indicates an endring which is secured to the flange B- by screws E, as indicated, or in any other convenient way. F
' B being the same, the pressure of the water will be equal at both ends of the mold and there will be no tendency to shift themold longitudinally.
Q It will be obvious that my invention is calpable of many modifications in form and, except where specifically limited in the claims, I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to the specific. construction illustrated, 1
although it is, I believe, the best form for the utilization ofmy invention, especially in that it permits of the use of a drum B of minimum diameter.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a centrifugal pipe casting machine a casing forming a water jacket surrounding the mold, in combination with abell ended pipe mold revolvably supported 1n the casing, and means connected to the bell and spigot ends of the mold forming Water tight joints of equal diameter for the Water jacket and so as to balance the Water pressure and avoid end thrust on the'mold. v
2. In a centrifugal pipe casting machine a casing forming a Water jacket surrounding the mold, in combination with a bell ended pipe mold revolvably supported in .the casing,
a packing ring fitted to the bell end of the mold forming a Water tight joint for the water jacket, a joint forming drum secured to the spigot end of the mold having substantially the same diameter as the part of the bell end to which the, packing ring is fitted and a packing ring or rings fitted between said drumv and the end wall of the Water jacket.
3. A centrifugal metallic pipe mold, the outer Wall of Which conforms substantially to its inner wall and formed Without integral radially extending flanges, said mold having means for forming a Water tight joint at its bell end and a separable joint forming drum at its spigot end of substantially the sanlie diameter as the joint formed at its bell en I JOHN H. UHRIG.
