I WALL BOARD.
Application nica. september is, iena.' semina. 583,462, A
, This invention relates in general to wall boards,'or plaster boards?, adapted for use in buildin constructions, thepresent board beingof .ne general character ofthat disclosed in my pending application, SerialNo.
4s8,749,fi1ed August 1', i921. e.
One of the purposes of this invention is to providea composition wall board having strong and durable edges which will not be in liable to becomechipped or cracked in hanf dling, and which will permit the driving of nails through' the board near the edges thereo-without chipping orl breaking. the board.
Another purpose is to provide a reenoi'ce l5 ment for the edges of the board which'can be.
' f readily applied as the board is being formed, 'g'
and which will greatly strengthenl these edges and render the board vmore durable for handling and nailing.
20 A further object is to utilize the covering .material in which the composition -body is enclosed for adding to the strength and'dura"' bility of the edges of the bohrd by providing covering of double thickness along sai 225 ed s.
gtill another object is to providel an improved 'oint or rseam by which the opposed edges o -the covering material may be united so as to obviate the overlapping of the op- `I0 posed edges ofthe material and enabling the production of a smooth and even joint. Gther objects and advanta es of the mven.
tion should be apparent as t e same becomesbetter understood by reference to the follow.-
ing description, whenconsidered connec-A tion with the accom anying drawings..
Referringto the r'awings:
inated margins at the sides of the boards. In
this instance, the outer reenforcing strip or I through near the edges.' The reenforcing elemen't is preferably so proportioned that the outer faces of the legs12 and 13 lie lush with. f
the topjand bottom faces of the board, as
shown in-Figs. l and 2, and"while the .com-1 positionmay completely lIill` the channel of the reenforcing element als shown at the left in Fig. 1, I have Afound .it preferable to kprovide anailing area formed completely of laminated reenforcing strips, and with this Vend l in view, theremay be disposed within thev channel, 'as illustrated at the right in Fig. f1',
a 'series of strips 15 which lie between the por-- i .be'exposed and form in itsel i VFi 1 is a cross sectionalview of a bo embodyin my invention; and
40 Fig. 2 is a s' ar view showing a modification. j
' Referring now toJthe drawin more in detail, reference character 11 esignates the body of -my improved board, which is formed 4|;v `of suitable composition usually com as .its principal ingredientgypsum, w ch 1s customarily mixed with ibrous material, wa-
material to form a plastic mass comino y known as I0 Stucco. This body. may-be' formed in any approved'manner, machines being customaril employed for this purpose.
' the form of the invention shown in S 1 and 2, the edgesof the board are -reenforced Il with' suitable fibrous material formed in 'sheets or etrips and to provide 1am- 1'1"A is'folded upwardl. as indica tion 14 of 'thechangel and the ledges ofthe composition ll, as hown in Figs. 1 and i2.'
-Nails ma vtherefore be driven through this laminate margin of the board without any liability of cracking or ychipping the board.
While the outer 4face f the the edge face o f the board as shown in Fig, 2, in which case the upper'an'd lower faces only of the body portion 14 may are covered byisheets of paper 'or other ibrous covering material 16 and 17, further strenthma'y be imparted to the edges of the boar by completely enclosing these edges in the covering materiah This result ma be accomplished, as shown in Fig.v 1, .by ma the upper'- and/ lower sheets 16 and 17 o l greater width than the board so that the margins of the covering sheets may bg folded w provide a double reen-forcing. enclosure pl t along the edges of th' lim board. As shownin Fig..1,.the'upper sheet 16 i's folded downwardl l 18 and1 thence inwardly fer-any 'desired dis-l tance as indicated at 19. '.Similarl the sheet' the portion-18 and t ence inwardly over the vbodyof the board, as indicated 'at '22. construction provides a'. board which -is com- 'letely enclosed in a sheath, the' body offthe. reenforced alongthe. marginal over the boardedge as indicated at ipp. at 21 over y reenforced by the overlapped plies of the covering material. f
Should it be desirable to use sheets of covering material narrower than the board to be formed, or if for any other purpose it` should be desirable to have a joint in the sheath on one face of the board, a simple joint Without overlapping edges may be formed as illustrated in Fig. l by disposing the opposed edges 23 and 24 of the sheath in abutting relation and positioning a strip Q5 of suitable material beneath the butt joint, this strip being secured to one or both of the edges Q3 and 24 by a suitable adhesive or by the plastic material forming the body l1 of the boai'd, if preferred, in which event the strip 25 is provided with one or lnore rows of perforations 20 through which the plastic material of the body is extruded under pressure so as to form a bond between the opposed faces of the covering material. Similarly the channel member-12 and thc upper sheet 16 may be perforated as indicated at 30 and respectively to permit access of the plastic material to the under faces of the overlapped ends of the'sheets for adhesive purposes.
It Will be apparent from the foregoing that my invention contemplates a wall board which 'is strengthened and reentorced along both edges, or either, by overlapping the margins of the covering sheet or sheets or by providing a 'channel-shaped edge liner which may contain laminated reenforeing edge or, if preferred, both types of reent'orcement may be employed so as to produce a strong and durable board.
If a single sheet instead of two sheets of covering material is referred the joint may be made along one edge, and formed in any of the manners disclosed, or it may be of the butt joint type located between the edges of the board as shown in Fig. l.
In any of the forms of joint disclosed, the lower ply of covering material may be pro vided with as many perforations as may be advisable and arranged in any desired relation.
' I claim:
l. A wall board, comprising a composition body provided with a rcenforced margin comprising a channel-shaped reenforcing element straddling the edge of said composition, and enclosing a laminated reenforcenient disposed between tlie edge of the composition and the connecting portion of the clement.
2. A vvall board, comprising a composition body provided with a laminated edge, and.
a separate reenforcing element enclosing said edge and the margin of the composition.
3. A wall board, comprising a coniposltion body provided with a reenforced laminated edge, and covering material enclosing said body and forming a double ply reenforcement along the edges of the board inwardly along the face of the board a limited distance from said edges.
