UNITED STATES FERDINAND S. OPPENHEIM, OF NEW YORK, N- Y.
CONTAINER.
Application filed August 1, 1925. Serial 1T0. 47,469.
This invention relates to packing and shiping boies and cases. More particularly, it
is directed to corrugated paper board coritainers or cartons of improved construction I for packing and shipping delicate apparatus such as radio sets, meters, typewriters, and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved containeror carton of the character described having a braced inner wall structure for reinforcing the outer walls to eflectively protect and cushion the enclosed contents from sudden blows and contacts so as to prevent injury and damage due to careless and. rough handling during transportat on and which includes one or more cushlonmg members of im roved construction having means associate therewith for bracing the adjacent side wall ofthe outer contalner cas- 20 i Another object of the invention is to provide an improved container or carton of the character described which is simple 1n construction, cheap to manufacture, and Bll'lGlel'lt and practical to a. high degree for the purposes described.
Other objects of this invention Wlll 1n part be obvious and in parthereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which Wlll beexemplifiedin the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is.
shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
. Fig. 1 is a. perspective view showlng a packing and ship ing box embodying the invention, parts the box belng broken away to show the interior; i
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on l1ne 2-2 in Fig. 1 showing the box closed and sealed with the contents (shown at a) packed therein;
Fig. 3 is a perspectiveview of a side cushioning member or artition llner;
, Fig. 4 is a plan new of a blank from which the top cushioning member shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5 is formed; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the improved top cushioning member.
Referring in detail to the drawing, denotes an'outer casing or shell of a packing and shipping box embodying the invention which may have any desired shape or design and ma be made of fibre board, card board, or the 1ke material, but is preferably constructed of corrugated paper board, the cellu-' lar structure of which has been found to add greatly to the cushioning effect for the purposes described. I
As seen in Fig. 1, the outer casing 10 is of collapsible construction and comprises elongated side walls 11, end walls 12, and cover flaps 13, 14., and 16, all preferably formed from a single sheet of material, cut, creased, and folded to form the rectangular sha ed shell 10, the cover flaps being adapted to old inwardly to form the to and bottom walls for closing the casing. hen the flaps are folded into their closed position, they may be held in place by any suitable. means as for example a strip of adhesive tape 17.
Partition liners or cushioning members 18 are provided which are arranged against the side walls, end walls and the bottom of the casing 10. Each of these members 18 maybe of any suitable and substantially identical construction and as seen most clearly from Fig. 3 is preferably formed of a single sheet of corrugated paper board, cut, creased and folded to form a rectangular shaped body portion 19, end walls 20, and side walls 21, said end walls 20 having flap extensions 22 which are bent to extend within andadj acent the slde walls 21 and held in position by suitable fastening means. or other fastenings for the side and end walls to retain them in their relative positions may be omitted if desired, since it is apparent that when the members 18 are assembled within the casing 10, the structure is self-retaining. See Fig. 2.)
It will be understood that the shipping box is of suitable dimensions to enable packing the article or articles therein so as to substantially fill the space marked A in Fig. 2, and that the partition liners 18 are of proper design to completely cover the interior sides and the bottom of the casing.
The flap extensions 22 As seen from Figs. 1 and 5, the topcushioning member 23 is preferably constructed of a single sheet of corrugated paper board, cut to the blank shape 23 shown in Fig. 4 and rovided with crease lines 23" so that the b ank 23 ma be formed into a folded structure shown 1n Fig. 5. The member 23 is seen to havea central rectangular receptacle portion 24: in one side thereof, the upstanding side walls 25 and 26 of which serve to cushion and space the contents from the top of the casing. Each of said walls and 26 may have outwardly extending edge llaps and 26 respectively which are adapted to support the cushioning member 23 on the inner wall structure and also to reinforce the corner bracing of the box as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The ends of each flap 26 may be provided with inwardly disposed flap extensions 26 for supporting said flaps. (See Figs. 1 and 5.)
To provide a braced inner wall structure ior the contents or article to be packed when such is relatively heavy or if the shipping box is liable to be subjected to unusual rough handling during transportation, each partition liner or member 18 and 23 has litted therein a bracing member 18 which may be constructed similarly to said liner 1S and proportioned to just fill the body portion 19 of liner 18 and the recessed portion 2a of member23. 'lhus said bracing member 18" forms a secondary abutting reinforcing wall for the casing 10 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the practice of the invention, the side and end partition liners 18 with the bracing members l8 fitted therein are first placed in 1 position in casing 10 and are held in their respective places as shown in Figs. 1 and by cushioning member 23 fitted with a member 18. Having arranged these braced liners in position with their body portion spaced inwardly from the various side alls of the easing, the article to be packed is then lowered into place, the side wall of the article abutting against the walls of the liners 18 and being spaced thereby a substantial distance from the walls of the casing 10.
\Vith these parts in position, a cushioning member23 fitted with a bracing member 18 in itsreceptacle portion 2 L is inserted in the top opening of the casing, the member 23 be ing dimensioned to the proper height to fill the space between the top of the contents and the top of the casing as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The cover flaps are then folded into position and the casing sealed in any suitable manner as by means of a strip of adhesive tape 17.
In utilizing the structural form of top cushioning member 23 described, the side and end liners'lS are preferably arranged to extend substantially to the top of the casing and the flaps 25 and 26 of said member 23 may be supported on the liners 18, said flaps being thus arranged to reinforce the corners and corner edge portions of the casing 10 'whichthe bracing member 18 serves to reinforcevthe adjacent wall of the casing 10.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A packing and shipping box comprising an outer casing having a pair of similarly constructed partition liners nested and arranged in the casing for each of the walls thereof, said liners forming a hollow sup porting structure in the casing adapted to protect and cushion the enclosed contents against damage during transportation.
2. A packing and shipping box comprising an outer casing having a pair of similarly constructed partition liners nested and ar-.
ranged in the casing for each of the walls thereof, said liners forming a hollow supportlng structure in the casing adapted to ment therefor, said liners and members being substantially similar in shape and construction. v
4:. A packing and shipping box comprising an outer casing having separate removable partition liners arranged therein foreach of the side walls of said casing, said liners havl ing a recessed body portion and a bracing member of substantially the same shape and construction as said liner demountably nested in each of said liners to form a hollow double wall cushioning structure for each side wall of said casing.
5. In a packing and shipping box of the character described having an outer casing, an inner wall cushioning structure for said casing comprising nongintersecting removable sections each consisting of two similarly shaped parts titted together to form a hollow structure having parallel spaced walls, one of said section walls abutting the entire adjan cent wall of said casing.
v(i. In a packing and shipping box of the character described having an outer casing, a plurality of removable spacing partitions arranged to abut one another to 'form the inner walls of the box, at least one of said partitions having a central receptacle portion and flaps extending outwardly from the side walls of said portion, and a member similar in shape and construction to said receptacle portion fitted into the latter to form a hollow wall structure abutting the adjacent side of the casing and extending to brace the entire ing from the walls of said portion and insaid side when the partition is in place. Wardly disposed tabs formed on the ends of 10 7. In a packing and shipping box, a cushsaid flaps, said tabs being positioned in superioning liner made of a single piece of corruimposed abutting relation With respect to the gated paper board cut into a blank, creased, ends of the adjacent edge flaps.
