Application filed June 21, 1926. Serial No. 117K447.
My invention relates more particuiarly to markers for application to the electric cables of radiii-receiving amiaratus to designate the various leads.
ertain ojltmy objects are to provide a simple and economical constructicm ot marker; to provide a marker which may be secured to a large variety of sizes otf cables; to provide a marker of such compactness that, when applied to the cable, it will not present obstruction to the ready insertion of the cable through the opening provided therefor in the cabinet of the a i niratusg to provide a marker which will present the minimum danger of tearing, or otherwise impairing,
the insulating covering of the able; to provide a marker which may be readily and securely applied to the cable; and other objects as will be manifist from the following de scription. V
.Reterri n g to t he a e c om p a n y 1 ng d r a win g Figure 1. is a view in side elevation of a portion ot a cable provided with a marker in acrordanee with my invention. the marker being shown by a face view thereof. Figure 2 is a similar view of the structure shown in Fig: 1, but viewing it from the opposite side thereof. Figure 3 is a section taken at the line 3 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; and. Figure 4:, a plan View at the blank from which the marker is produced.
ltly improved marker, according to the preferred einl'iodimcnt oi" my inventioi'i, is formed from a single blank o't .i'netal preterably oi such contractor that it may be readily bent by pliers and remain in bent condition, as for example zinc, so'tt steel, brass or aluininuin. Such a blankis shown in Fig. t and is formed. of a plate portion adapted to present the desired marking, as for example by etching it thereon, and provided at opposite edges thereof with lugs t5 projecting in opposite directions crosswise of the plate portion 5 and arranged in staggered relation to each other, as shown.
The plate portion 5 of the device is pref erably preliminarily bent generally into the curved 'iorm shown in l? 3, in which condition it would be provided for application to the cable to be equipped therewith, though it desired the device may be provirhul of the llatrtorin shown in Fig. :t.
in iimilyiiig the marker to a cable it is poerably that of sitioncd at its plate portion 5 against the side of the cable as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and the lugs a bent around the cable as shown. lly preterence the metal of the device would be such that the bending of thelugs 6 into the desired close engagement with the cable, and the bending of the plate portion 5 into the desired conforming tit upon the cable, where the plate portion 5 is provided fiat or where it is provided. 01' curved shape but of a curvature either greater or less than that of the cable to which it is applied, would require the use of ordinary pliers.
()ne ot the ad antages presented by a marker made in accordance with my invention is the adaptability of the marker to widely ditl'cring sizes of cables, due to the tact that the clamping portions of the device at their extremities are arranged in stag gcrcd relation wl'icreby they extend in relatively overlapped relatioi'i as shown in F ig. In this connection it may be stated that in. the turnishing of these markers to the trade with the plate portion 5 curved as above stated, the curvature would be prel the medium size one of the varieties of cables with which it may be used so that this plate portion would, in the application of the marker to the able, be straightened out slightly when applied to larger cables, and bent to present greater curvature when applied to the smaller cables.
A further advantage arising from the use of a marker in a C((JIhillMt with my invention arises 't'roin the tact that the marker when applied to the cable may be caused to very closely embrace the latter, thereby presenting a very compact structure and being tree of objectionable protruding parts which if present would prevent the cable being threaded at its marker-cumpped portion through the opening theretor. Furthermore, it will be noted that danger of the marker tearing, or otl'ierwise impairing, the insulating covering); of the cable is greatly minimized.
While I have illustrated and described a particular conctruction embodying my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same may be *ariously modified and altered without departing from the spirit thereof.
What 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by letters Patent, is:
l. A. cable marker formed from sheet ill) '7 metal and comprising a central plate portion for receiving markings having a lug portion on one side adjacent one end and a like In portion on the other side adjacent the ot er end, said lug portions being adaptedtdbebent about the cable in staggered relation to each other, the marker being adapted to snugly embrace the cable when applied thereto. v
I 2. A cable marker formed from sheet metal comprising a plain rectangular central plate and tworectangular lug portions extending outwardly from said plate at opposite sides thereof, one atone end of said plate and the other at the other endof said plate, the
plate and said outwardly extending portions being adapted to be bent about and snugly tit a cable.
3. A cable inarlrer formed troinsheet inctal comprising a plain rectangular central body sides thereof, one at one end and the other at the other end, the body portion and said lugs adapted to be bent about and. snugly lit a cable, said lugs overlapping each other laterally when so bent.
