The present invention relates to improvements in locks and has particular reference to a door-lock. The principal object of the invention is to provide a lock of the character described that is particularly well constructed and diflicult to open without the aid of a key made for the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel operating mechanism for the lock bolt that is particularly efl'ective and simple in construction.

While I have shown only the preferred form of the invention I wish to have it understood that various chan es or modifications may be made within t e scope of the claims attached hereto without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In its preferred form my lock comprises a tumbler arrangement accommodated in the tumbler housing 1 and the bolt operating mechanism arranged in the preferably rectangular fiat case 2 adapted to be inserted into the edge of a door in a manner well known in the art: 7 The housing 1 is adapted for insertion through a transverse hole and to be threaded into the case after the latter has been inserted as shown at 3 in Figure 12.
The front end of the housingis provided with a slight conical flange 4E and receives before insertion a conical rin 6 adapted to bear on the late 7 customarily arranged on doors in com ination with locks of this character. The housing is firmly held againstv rotary motion by means of a set screw 8 introduced from the edge of the door through a hole in the plate 9 formed integral with the case 2 and this set screw extends through a tube 11 dis osed on the inside of the housing so that t is tube is also held against rotary motion. The tube is provided with a plurality of longitudinal slots 12 connecting each with a transverse slot 13. A cylinder 14 is revolvable in this tube .11 but is held against endwise motion-by means of a flange 16 bearing on the outer end of the tube 11 and seated in a recess 17 in the housing and at the inner end by a plate 18 secured to the cylinder by means of screws 19.
The cylinder is formed with a lurality of radial slots 21 ada ted to slida ly receive registering fiat tum lers 22 having pins 23 projecting forwardly therefrom and extending into small bores 24 through which prongs 26 of a key 27 may be inserted. The length of the ins 23 and the prongs 26 is such that when t e key 27 is fully inserted the pins 23 and with them the tumblers 22 are pushed backward sufliciently far to allow outward projections 28 extending from the tumblers into the longitudinal slots 12 to register with the transverse slots 13 and to be pushed thereinto by a revolving motion of the key. The latter is formed with a central guiding member 29 adapted for insertion in a perforation 31 in the cylinder for steadying the key. The guide member is" preferably notched as shown at 32 to allow a spring 33 in the perforation 31 to catch therein.

A retractable dog 41 projects from the back plate 18 and has a spring 42 associated Springs 34: guided by pins 36 tend to push I therewith tending to force the same outwardly- This dog is used for transferring rotary motion from the cylinder 14 to the bolt operating mechanism shown in Figures 11 and 12, the dog engaging with a ratchet 43 and'causing the ratchet to revolve with the same when turned in one direction; The ratchet is held against backward motion by a pawl 44 engaging with another ratchet 46 fixed relative to the ratchet 43 so that on the return-motion of the cylinder 14 the dog 41 rides over the slanting face 47 of a ratchet tooth to engage with the other steep face thereof for the next turn. A disc 49 from which certain peripheral sections have been removed is fixed to the ratchet and has a plurality of symmetrical pins 51 depending from its peripheral section, each pin carrying a roller 52'.v A bolt 53 of conventional form is made slidably inthe edge plate 9 and is formed with a rear extension plate 54 shaped to surround the rollers 52 and provided with two cam faces 56 and 57 adapted to be alternately engaged by the rollers 52. In the position shown in Figure 11 one of the rollers 52 is just about to pass the cam 56 for forcing the plate 54 into an extreme backward position. Continuation of rotary motion forces the plate further backward until the front face of the bolt 53 is flush with the front face of the plate 9 at which time the roller passes the point of 56 and the disc 49 comes to a standstill due to the factthat the cylinder 14 has reached the limit of its rotary movement. In this position another roller 52 is ready to attack the cam face 57 upon a new turning motion of the cylinder 14 whereby-the bolt 53 is thrown outwardly into engagement with a socket provided in the frame to which the door is to be locked. When passing the cam 57 the roller 52 responsible for the last bolt movement, engages, due to the action of a spring 59, in a notch 61 for holding the bolt 53 against rearward motion. It is apparent that at this time the roller 52 is right in the path of the bolt and the latter isefi'ectively prevented from being forced backward. A spring 62 adapted to drop into a notch 63 at the front edge of the plate .64 yieldingly locks the said plate in the said rearward position. The plate may be guided in any suitable manner as between two abutments 64 and clips 66 extending over the same from the abutments.
The operation of my locking device is as follows: To unlock the same a key is inserted and pushes the. tumblers 22 backward over the resistance of the springs 34 until the projecting prongs 28 register with the transverse slots 13 in the tube 11 whereupon a turning movement is executed against the opposition of the spring 37, the turning movement being limited by the pin 35. A lock comprising a bolt, a bolt actuating member intermittently rotatable in one direction for selectively moving said bolt into locking position and into unlocked position, an oscillating key actuating member for advancing said bolt actuating member step by step, said member beingadapted to be rotated in one direction by a key to move said bolt into locked position or into unlocked position, and positive means for preventing the return movement of said bolt actuating member.
9. A look comprising a bolt, a bolt moving member having a locking nut in alignment with the path of movement of said bolt, and an intermittently rotatable bolt moving member having its axis cutting thru a line drawn between the notch and the bolt, and means carried by said rotatable member and receivable in said notch for securing the bolt in locked position.
10.
