This carrierispivoted at 21 to the-'head lf'and is provided with a radial slot 22 adapted to be'engaged by a pin`23fixed to and projectmg downwardly from the kplate 17. By slot connection, the carrier 20hmay be moved fromv side toside byproperly rotating the plate 17 Vby manipu lationk of the spindle 18. The carrier 2O and the plate 17 are held inplaceby'a cap 24 fixed tothe head 16, fas by pin 25, vand provided with a' curvedslot 26 in which' a crank pin 27 `mounted vonl the carrier v20 may move when the 'carrier swings on its pivot 21.y It will be seen, therefore,- thatl by manipulation of the button 19, the carrier 20y may be swung back and forth from side to side yon the head 16. AThe crank pin 27fis mountedon one` side of the carrier so that movement of Asaid carrier to'one sidewill movethe'crankpin out to the extremei'rim of the head 16 while movement in the opposite direction will bring the crank pinsubstantially into alinement with the shaft 11. It willbe seen, therefore, that this carrier and its pin 27 providea crank of variable throw according' tothe adjustment of the plate 17. y
The Crank pin27 may be connected by a y y 'and may be provided with a suitablek cover 14 Yfixed in place by a1,

A plate 17 is not-,fixed to the stem" 18 passing upwardly shaft 11 and through Vthe -will also be slow so changing the length it at vthe center and suitable link 28 with a iixed pivot 29 on the base 3 so that rotation of the shaft 11 Will operate to swing the fan from side `to side through an arc depending on the adjustment of the crank pin 27. A detent engaging suitable notches in the plate 17 is adapted to yieldingly retain said plate in adjusted position.
In the operation of this device the motor, throughthe agency of the gearing 6, 7, 8, 9 and l0, drives the vertical Vshaft l1 and thereby the head 1.6 in rotation. Said rotation will carry the crank pin 27 in a circular pathso as'to swing the fan back and forth. Since the rotation of the shaft 1l is quite. slow on account of the large reduction ratio of the gearing 6, 7, 8, -9 .and l0, the' rotationof the manipulative ybutton 19 that the butt-on maybe grasped and turned in eitherI direction relatively to the shaft 1l even while the fan is in motion. Said movement of the button 19 will have .the eifect, as :above described of Since the pathof the pin 27 across the head 16 passes through the center of said head, the pin 27 may be adjusted so as to position when so positioned, the fan will not oscillate. i I It will be seen, therefore, that in accordance with this invention` oscillating mechanism is provided in which the manipulating adjusting element is-placed above the head and even above the motor bearing. There is thus no danger of soiling or injuring the lingers during said manipulation.
. It' is obvious that various `changes may be made in details of construction without Vdeparti-ng from the spirit of rthis invention; it is, therefore, to be understood that this invention -is not to be limited to the specific details shown and described.
Having thus described the invention, what is :claimed is:
1. In a fan having a lbase and a motor thereon, oscillating mechanism comprising,l a head connected to he 'driven 4by the motor, a crank mounted for adjustment on said head, an elemen-t mounted on said head and having an adjusting` connection with said crank, and a manipulative member having a stem eX- tending downwardly toward and connected to operate said element.
2. 1n a fan'having a base and `a motor thereon, oscillating mechanism comprising, ahead connected to be driven by the motor, a crank mounted Vfor adjustment on said head, and means for adjusting said crank and having a manipulating e'lement located above said head.
In a fan having a base, a motor thereon provided with a shaft and a bearing for seid shaft4 oscillating mechanism comprising a head connected to be driven by the -motor shaft, a crank mounted for adjustment- -chor, a rotatable adjusting of the crank arm.
on said head, and means for adjusting said crank having a manipulative element above the bearing. Y
4. Fan oscillating mechanism, comprising, a shaft' driven by the fan motor, a rotating head driven by saidshaft, a carrier adjustable transversely of said head and providing a crank connected with a stationary anplate for adjusting said carrier to vary the throw of said crank, :and fa. stem connected for adjusting said plate and having a manipulative element lat the upper end thereof.
5. A fan oscillating mechanism, Acompr-ising, a vertical shaft driven by the fan mo-- tor, a rotating head driven carrier pivoted on said head and carrying-a crank pin, an -adjusti-ng element .movable concent-ricalfly with said shaft and connected to move said carrier, .a stem within .said shaft and fixed to said ele-ment, yand a manipulating member at the top of :said stem.
6. A fan comprising, frame provided with to oscillate on said base, mounted en said frame and coninectedto be driven by said motor, a-crank connected withV said base, and said crank to drive `the latter, andmeans for adjusting said'crank including a stern in said sleeve and a manipulative .element located away from said Acrank may be manually adjusted without injury.
