My invention relates to improvements in exercisers of that type which comprises one or more elastic members connected at the ends thereof to a pair of handles, and it consistsin the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed. v

An object of the invention 1is the proJ vision of an exerciser of the character described which has Simple, reliable and quickly and easily adjusted means for'connecting the ends ofa single strip of elastic material or the ends of any predetermined number of susperposed strips of elastic ma' terial within` a considerable range with a pair of hand grip members so that the resistancey of the exerciser to any force tending to modify the normal form of the elastic membervor members thereof can be varied at will by varying the number of elastic strips which are connectedl with the hand grip members.

A 'further object of the invention is the provision of an vezrerciser of the character described which affords facilities for con- 'necting the opposite ends of a plurality of superposed strips of elastic material to hand grip members so that any pull on the elastic strips as a result of movement of the hand grip members apart or away from each other will be resisted equall by the respective elastic strips provided t at the elastic strips are of the same size and have the same elas tic strength.

A still further object of the invention is the provision in an eXerciser of the character described of handle units comprising clamping means for holding corresponding en s of a plurality of superposed strips of elastic material firmly clamped together without undue pressure on any one of the elastic strips and without injury to the elastic strips. p Y Other ob'ects and'advantages of the invention wil be ap arent from the following description, consi ered in conjunction with .the accompanying drawings, which Figure 1 is a view showing an exerciser embodying the invention in use.

In carrying out the invention, I make use of onel or more elastic strips 1. Each strip 1 is made of sheet material possessing desirsectional contour. Eachhand grip member- 3 is joined integrally at its ends to a pair of side bars 4 which are joined integrally to the ends of a clamp member or jaw 5, the latter thus being disposed parallel to the hand grip member 3. T e clamp member 5 has a flat upper face indicated at 6 which lies in a plane that exten-ds through the hand grip member 3 below the center line of the latter. -The clamp member 5 also has upstanding stud pro'ections 7 rigid therewith adjacent to opposite ends thereof. Each handle unit also comprises a second clamp member or jaw Shaving the form of a substantially fiat bar formed with vertical openings in the end portions thereof through which the stud projections 7 may extend.` The clamp member 8 has a fiat bottom face, indicated at 9 in Figure 3. The clam member 8'may be .reinforced by a longitu inally extending integral stiifening rib 10 on the upper face thereof. Nuts 11 threadedly engage the extending'upper end portions of the stud projections 7 and prevent displacement of the -upper clamp member 8 from a desirable p0- sition with respect to the lower clamp member 5.

From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. One or more uo l tween the cooperative members of the clamps. I claim l. An exerciser of the character described comprising a pair of hand grip members, an elastic strip adapted to be stretched longitudinally and pairs of adjustably connected substantially iiat cooperating jaws for connecting the ends of said strip with said hand grip members.

2. An exerciser of the character described comprising a pair of hand grip members, one or more strips of elastic material, each adapted to be stretched, and a clamp connected with each hand gri memberand comprising a pair of adjustab y connected substantially fiat jaws, for releasably holding an end portion or portions of said strip or strips of elastic material. f

3. An exerciser of the character described comprising an elongated flat strip of elastic material adapted tol be stretched,y a pair of handle units, each comprising a hand grip member, and a clamp 'connected with said hand grip member and comprisinga pair of' adjustably connected substantially fiat jaws for gripping an end portion of said strip l portions of sai ofelastic material, one of said jaws being rigidly connected with said hand grlp member.

An exerciser of the character described comprising a pair of handle units, each comrising a hand grip member, a clamp memer connected at its ends with the ends of said hand grip member and disposed parallel to said hand grip member, said clamp member having a flat upper face, upstanding stud projections on the opposite end portions of said clamp member, a second clamp member having vertical openings yin the end portions thereof through which said stud projections may extend, said second clamp member having a at bottom face,- nuts threadedl en aged withthe extending end portions o sai stud'projections, the flat upper face of said first named clamp member lying Ain a plane which extends through said and grip member below the longitudinal-center line of the latter, and an elongated elastic member having its ends held between the ,clamp members of said handle units.
