Definitions
- my invention is the improved method of forming the skate-irons, o-r runners, in two parts (a, and 32,) Figures 1, and 2, in such a manner that they may be separated (vertically) in order to sharpen them upon a grinding stone or its equivalent, so that the lower edges or bottom of the ruimer or iron (c, and (L) Figs. 1 and 3 is perfectly smooth and sharp which is very essential for skating purposes, particularly for children, ladies, and others who are not accustomed to practice the art of skating.
- the usual method of sharpening skate irons is to use a round file which is a very laborious and irksome task and of little or no benefit to a steel skate and very little improvement to the softest iron runner; but by my plan ofconstruction I am en abled to produce a skate that may be kept in perfect working order with little or no expense to the owner.
Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. FORBES, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
SKATE.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 16,231, dated December 16, 1856.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN EDWIN FORBES, of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Method of Constructing Skate-Irons; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, which are lettered to correspond with and form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention is the improved method of forming the skate-irons, o-r runners, in two parts (a, and 32,) Figures 1, and 2, in such a manner that they may be separated (vertically) in order to sharpen them upon a grinding stone or its equivalent, so that the lower edges or bottom of the ruimer or iron (c, and (L) Figs. 1 and 3 is perfectly smooth and sharp which is very essential for skating purposes, particularly for children, ladies, and others who are not accustomed to practice the art of skating.
The usual method of sharpening skate irons is to use a round file which is a very laborious and irksome task and of little or no benefit to a steel skate and very little improvement to the softest iron runner; but by my plan ofconstruction I am en abled to produce a skate that may be kept in perfect working order with little or no expense to the owner.
I do not confine myself to common iron skate alone but steel blades 0r runners may be successfully used until they are entirely worn out, which is not the case with the skates that are in common use for they cannot be kept sharp, consequently are abandoned.
rTherefore what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
Forming the iron or runner of two parts or plates (a, and 5,) for the purpose and in the manner substantially as described, and shown in the drawings.
In testimony whereof I hereunto Vsubscribe my name in the presence of two wit-- nesses.
JOHN EDWIN FORBES. Vitnesses:
DAVID CRowTHER, J AMES P. MCLEAN.
