PATENT PHEBE L. CARTER AND JAMES W. RHOADES, OE CLYDE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SHEARS, BUTTON-HOLE CUTTERS, &c..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,029, dated April 13, 1875 application filed February 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, P. L. CARTER and J. WV. RHOADES, of Clyde, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Colnbined Shears, Button-Hole Cutters, 86o.; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specitication.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device attached to an ordinary pair of scissors or shears, for cutting button-holes and tying carpet-rags, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side view of a pair of shears embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a detached view of a part of the invention.
A A represent the blades, and B B their respective handles, of a pair of shears or scissors, pivoted together at e in the usual manner. From at or near the pivot-point e eX- tends a curved arm, C, from the blade A, and in the same plane therewith. To the outer end of this arm is secured a triangular knifeblade. D, having its outer cutting-edge curved convex, and the inner edge concave. In the point of the blade D is an elongated slot, b, as shown. From the blade A extends a similar arm, C', provided with a slot, in which is hinged another arm, E, held by a spring, d, in such a manner that there will be room enough between the two arms C and E for the passage of the knife-blade D. The arm C may be made with a longitudinal slot for the passage of the blade D without the spring-arm; but we prefer to use said springarm, as thereby the slot may be enlarged, as required, while tying carpet-rags, or, in other words, be self-adjusting to the thickness of the articles being passed through.
For cutting button-holes, the cloth is held by two fingers on the arms C E, while the shears are open, and by then closing the shears the knife D will pass or cut through the cloth. This knife being graduated, as shown, the proper length of button-hole can easily be out.
For tying carpet-rags, the ends are placed on top of each other on the arms Cl E, and by closing the shears the knife D cuts the holes therein. When the knife is through the strips, the end of the strip from the operator is passed through the slot b, when the shears are again opened, raising the knife out of the strips, and carrying with it the end of the strip which was inserted in the slot b. This end is then pulled out of slot, and the two strips drawn in opposite directions, forming a knot uniting them.
This device is simple, yet exceedingly useful. The person cutting the carpet-rags has, with the shears, the device for tying them in hand at the same time.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as' new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a pair of shears or scissors, the arm C, with slotted knife-blade D, and the arm C', with spring-arm E, substanti-ally as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
PHEBE L. CARTER. JAMES XVM. RHOADES.
