IMPROVEMENT IN GLOBE-HOLDERS FOR LAMPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,608, dated February 9, 1875; application filed l December 16, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUssELL B. PERKINS, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Globe-Holders ,for Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following, wh en taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification', and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in the article of lamp furniture known as a globe-holder-that is, the ring which is attached to or placed over a burner to support a globe-shade.

As the construction of lamps is various, it has been the usual practice to make holders fitted for each particular class of burner-as, for instance, the sun-burner,77 and other burners which ha-ve an internal support for the chimney s'ome distance above the chimneyrest, requiring a very different construction from the class which have external springs extending up from the chimney-rest outside the chimney. Hence, manufacturers and dealers are obliged to keep `a variety of holders in order to meet the demand for the great variety of burners, many of which are required to be furnished with globe-holders.

The object of this invention is to construct a universal globe-holder, or one which is adapted to the various construct-ions of burners 5 and it consists in a holder formed with a rest for the globe, and with an internal ring constructed with downward -projecting clasps upon its lower edge to sit over the chimney-rest, and with notches in its upper edge Fto pass over the external vertical springs of the burner, as more fully hereinafter described.

`A is the globe-rest, formed in the usual manner to receive the lower rim of the globe.

Within this rest is a ring, B, its internal diameter being substantially that of the exterior of the chimney. On the lower edge of this ring B are formed several tongues, a, projecting downward, and so as to pass over the outer edge ot' the chimney-rest, it being understood that the diameter of the chimneyrest is common to all burners of the classes for which the globe-holder is intended. In the upper edge of the ring B are notches d, corresponding to the vertical springs C of the class of burners which have outside springs, as seen in Fig. 2.

For the sun-burner, and burners of that class, such as seen in Fig. 3, the holder is passed over the detlector, springs D, and set down onto the chimneyrest E, as seen in Fig. 3, the tongues a passing' down and clasping over the edge of the rest.

For burners of the other class-that is, with outside springs-the holder is placed over the burner, the ring B within the spring C, but so that the notches d will be in line with the springs, and then pressed down, the springs yielding for the purpose, to sit upon the rest E, as in Fig. 2, the tongues a passing down over the edge of the rest, the same as in the sun-burner; but in this case the springs C fall back into the notches d, thus leaving the springs as free asf the holder were not present.

By constructing the holder with both the tongues a and notches 1,1 produce a globeholder common to all burners using the seme chimney.

I claim- The herein-described globe-holder, consisting of the outer ring or globe-rest, A, and the inner ring, B, provided with the tongues c upon its lower edge, and the notches d upon its upper edge, substantially' as specified.
