Description

Patented Aug. 10, 1926.
UNITED STATES LAWRENCE WHEATLEY, OF SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND.
DEVICE FOR 'IILTING BABRELS.
Application filed December 14, 1923, Serial No.
This invention relates to devices for tilting barrels.
A device for tilting barrrels made according to this invention comprises a gantry, a frame pivoted at one end to said'gantry so as to be tiltable about its pivoted end, a barrel supporting cradle pivoted intermediate of its ends to the gantry and to the frame so as to be tiltable about its intermediate pivot, the rear end of said cradle terminating flush with the frame and the front end protruding to engage the flange of a barrel and to support said barrel when free of the gantry, a resilient member between said cradle and frame at the rear permitting movement of one with respect to the other about their pivots.
One form of device made in accordance with this invention is illustrated in the drawings filed herewith, in which Fig. l is a side elevation showing a barrel in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation.
Fig. 3 is a plan of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a similar view to Fig. 1, but showing the device in position for the removal or emplacement of a barrel.
a is a barrel gantry which may be of the usual kind and b, b are two brackets secured thereto in any suitable manner. Pivoted to the brackets at the front of the gantry is a barrel rest or cradle consisting of two longitudinal side members 0, 0 connected together by cross pieces or stays cl, cl, each longitudinal member being pivoted to each bracket 6 intermediate of its ends, as shown at 6, so that the cradle can be tilted from the rear about such pivot. Also pivoted at e is a frame 7 for supporting the rear of the cradle through the medium of a spring 9 bearing against said rest and frame, the spring being disposed over a stem h carried by the cradle, and said stem moving in a guide j carried by the frame 7", the arrangement being such that the frame can also tilt from the rear about the pivot e. A barrel is indicated in dotted lines is normally supported at an angle above the horizontal by the cradle, the front ends of which are slightly hooked to engage the usual flange of the barrel.
In use, as the contents of the barrel are drawn off, the remaining contents flow towards the front owing to the normal tilt of the barrel, thereby allowing said barrel to tilt from the rear under the action of the 680,614, and in Great Britain September 5, 1923.
spring 9 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and when it is desired to remove an empty barrel, the frame along with the cradle is tilted as shown in Fig. 4, thereby permitting the barrel to be readily removed and replaced by a full one when the frame and the cradle are'returned to their normal position.
In some cases means may be provided for taking up shock when the frame and cradle are returned to their normal position and which means may, for example, comprise resilient stops m, m disposed at the rear of the gantry and bearing upwards against the frame f, said resilient stops, in the example shown, consisting of spring restrained members moving in guides attached to the gantry.
Further, means may also be provided for rigidly supporting the cradle in its tilted position and thereby preventing it from swinging backwards about the pivot and this may comprise a ratchet and pawl mechanism adapted to restrain the cradle against return movement as it tilts under the action of the spring 9. In the example shown in Fig. 4. a ratchet 0 is pivoted to the side of one of the members 0 and a pawl 29 is secured to the frame 7 and adapted to engage the ratchet p as shown. A guide g for the ratchet is also attached to the frame.
