A. C. FUNSTON.
Picture-RodMoulding.
Patented 1an. 26,1875.
UNITED STATES PATENT rrron ABRAM C. FUNSTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN PICTURE-ROD MOLDINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,027, dated January 26, 1875; application filed March 26, 1874.
To all whom it may conce-m:
Be it known that I, ABRAM C. FUNsToN, of the city of Philadelphia and State. of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Gilt Moldings, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to make a picture-rod molding which will not only be ornamental, but more serviceable than those in present use, for the purpose of hanging pictures and other ornaments in parlors, libraries, and other rooms, and to have a molding of such. a form that it may be easily nailed to the wall without defacing the gilding, as is now always the case in driving nails through the gilt surface, to accomplish which I have invented a form of molding with the back part A prpjecting above the face of the molding to such an extent as to admit of nails, B B, to be driven through its projection, instead of through the outer or gilt face of the molding, the projection aforesaid serving as a guide at the same time to the putting up ofthe same, therebyexpediting the work by keeping it at a proper distance from the ceiling, besides allowing room for a greater variety of hooks, and permitting them to be put on and taken off with greater facility than is now the case. This projection A may be made of Wood or metal, adding to the sustaining power of the molding by nailing through the said projection A, instead of through the gilt center of the molding, as now used.
The said projection may be made ornamental by finishing in colors according' to taste, and Wlll also enable moldings of smaller size, of dii'- ferent forms, but full-burnished, to be used for the purpose of picture-rod moldings, Whereas only one form is now used, and that is gilded with matt or dull centers, which improvements will reduce the cost fifty per cent.
I claim as my invention- A molding consisting of the part A to receive the nails, and the bead D, for the purpose specified.
A. C. FUNSTON.
