H. HEDISON STOCKING ORNAMENT Filed April 17. 1925 ATTORNEY ing shown in' fragmentary section.
Patented June 15, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STOCKING ORNAMENT.
Application filed April 17, 1925. Serial no. 23,839.
My invention relates to an ornament for application upon a stocking visible between the bottom of the skirt and the upper portion of the shoe.
The essential objects of the invention are to afford a sightly appearance; to insure the ornament against accidental detachment; to facilitate the application of the ornament to the stocking; to prevent circular movement of the ornament; and to attain these ends in a structure which does not injure the stocking or occasion discomfort to the flesh and which is inexpensive to construct.
To the above ends, my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of theornamental member,
Figure 2, a front elevation of the retaining plate, and
Figure 3, a vertical central section of the device applied to a stocking, the latter be- Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
The body portion of the device comprises an ornamental plate 5 which in this instance.
is in the outline of a lizard. This plate may be engraved or may carry ornamental stones, if desired. Centrally of this plate upon its back face and integral therewith or soldered thereto is a knob comprising a shank portion 7 of oval or oblong cross section and an enlarged head 8 also oval or oblong of greater dimensions than the shank and provided with rounded edges.
Cooperating with the described ornamental member is a thin retaining plate 10 preferably of celluloid having a central oval or oblong opening 11 from which opening extends peripheral radial cavities 12 where by are formed inwardly directed resilient engaging lips 13.
My ornament is operated as follows: The plate 5 is placed against the exterior of the face of the stocking 15 with the knob forming a rearward depression in the stocking. The plate 10 is then applied from the rear into engagement with the rear face of the stocking by pressing the plate against the fabric covered head 8. Since the opening 11 is of less dimensions than that of the fabric covered head 8 the resilient lips 13 after passing over the head resume their normal positions in the plane of the plate 10 and closely surround the fabric covered shank 7 Because of the oblong or oval shape of the shank 7 and the corresponding shape of the corresponding opening 11 of the retaining plate, it will be noted that the plate 5 will not move in a circular direction relatively to the plate 10. The larger dimensions of the head 8 of the knob combines with the resilient engaging lips to insure a close frictional contact of both plates with the stocking 15.
After the retaining plate has been snapped 'into position as above described, the parts are in firm engagement with the stocking and secure against accidental detachment. The thin celluloid retaining plate 10 is of such a character as not to injure the skin of the wearer; and the parts are of simple and inexpensive construction.
I claim A stocking ornament comprising a plate having upon its back an oval shank with elongated head of greater dimensions than the shank, .and a thin flat celluloid retaining plate having an oval opening with radial cavities and resilient lips intermediate said cavities, said plate adapted to lie substantially parallel with the first-named plate to retain a fabric between said plates and on said knob and the two plates being relatively nonrotatable in use.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
HARRY HEDISON.
