H. T. YOUNG suns snos uncmmu'r FOR ROAD GRADERS Filed Sept. 16, 1925' INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Apr. 20, 1926;
I'T ED STATES HENRY T. YOUNG, OF DARLINGTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
SLIDE-SHOE ATTACHMENT FOR ROAD GRADERS.
Application filed September 16, 1925. vSerial No. 56,691. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Darlington, in the county of Darlington and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slide-Shoe Attachmentsfor Road Graders,
V of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a slide shoe and bracket 10 structure which is attachable to an end portion of a transverse frame or body member of a road grader, and which consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangement herein described and'claime-d.
15. An object of the invention is the provision of a slide shoe and bracket arrangement which can be associated with either of the similar opposite ends of a transverse body or frame member of a road grader so that a pair of the slide shoes can be use-d interchangeably on the opposite ends of the transverse body member of the road grader and the slide shoes when applied to said transverse body member will function to slidably support the latter for movement on the ground in a uniform manner and also will tend to prevent irregular cutting movements of the scraper blades to which the transverse body member of the road grader ordinarily is attached.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a slide shoe and bracket unit which willbe'strong and durable and which can be produced at a relativelyv low cost.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will beapparent from the following description considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective viewof a slide shoe and bracket embodying the invention associated with an end portion of .a transverse body or frame member of a road grader, and
Figure 2 is a perspective group viewof the slide shoe and bracket separated from each other. I
The improved slide shoe comprises a substantially flatelongated body'l whichpreferably (is made by casting of iron. This elongated substantially fiat body 1 has the opposite end portions thereof turned upwardly as indicated at 2 and stayed to the remainder of the body by integral web portions or ribs 8 The staying and reinforcing ribs 8 preferably lie in the plane of the longitudinal median line of the body 1.
The body 1 is formed with vertical openings 1 which extend through the body along the longitudinal median line of the latter and which respectively are located at oppositesides of the transverse median line of the body 1 equidistant from and adjacent to said transverse media-n line of the body 1.
Theinvention provides a bracket which also preferably is formed by casting iron and comprises two membersb and 6, respective ly. The members 5 and 6 are of plate-like form and are integral with each other. These members 5 and 6 lie in planes which extend at right the member 6 will be disposed vertically edgewise when the member 5 is superimposed onthe body 1 of the slide shoe intermediate the ends of the slide shoe, with the vertical openings 7 which are formed in the opposite end portions of the member 5 in register with the vertical openings 4 of the body 1. Bolts 8 may be projected through the alined openings -l.(' and may have the end portions of the shanks thereof engaged by nuts 9 and tightenedto clamp the member 5 of the bracket firmly in place on the body 1, of the slide shoe. The member 6 of the bracket then will be disposed in the vertical plane which extends at the inner edge of the body 1 of the slide shoe. The member 6 of the bracket is stayed to the member 5 of the bracket by a reinforcing web or rib 10 which is integral with both members 5 and'6 and preferably lies in the plane of the transverse median line of the bracket. The vertical member 6 of the bracket is formed with a horizontal opening ll-whichextends transversely thcretnrough above the reinforcing veb 10 and intermediate the ends of the member (3. v i
In Figure 1, I show a fragmentary portion of a cross member of the frame or body of aroad grader with which the slide shoe and bracket unit is adapted to be used. This cross member of the frame or body of the road grader is designatedgenerally at 12 and is shown as having a downturned end portion 13 of plate-like formation at the extremity of the end portion thereof that is exhibited in Figure 1. The members 6 of the bracket is adapted to fit flat-wise against the outer face of the end portion 13 and to be secured to the latter by a bolt 1 1, the
shank of which extends through the open mg 11 and the opening in the end portion 13 that is in alinement with the opening 11,
angles to each other so that and a nut 15 which can be tightened on the bolt 14 to clamp the member 6 firmly against the end portion 18 of the cross member 12. It will be understood that in actual practice the cross member 12 has an end portion 13 at each of the opposite ends and that one of the slide shoes that the invention provided is connected with each of the opposite ends of the cross member 12. The cross member 12 is adapted to be connected, as by means of chains such as that partially shown in Figure 1 and designated 16, with the usual scraper blades, not shown, and it will be manifest that the restraining influence of the cross member and chains on the blades will be uniform when the cross member 12 is supported as at its ends on the slide shoes.
Obviously the invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that shown and I therefore consider as my own all such modifications and adaptations thereof as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim I l. A slide shoe comprising a substantial- 1y fiat body having identical upturned end portions, said body having a pair of vertical openings formed therethrough along the longitudinal median line 01 the body at opposite sides of the transverse met ian line of the body, and equi-distant from the transverse median line of said body, and a bracket having a member adapted to be superimposed on said body and having openings adapted to be placed in register with the openings in said body, fastening devices including members extending through said alinged openings of the bracket member and the body, and means whereby said bracke can be secured to an end portion of a cross member of a road grader.
2. In combination with a cross supporting member having a do-wnturned end portion, a bracket comprising two members lying in planes extending at right angles to each other, said bracket members being joined integrally to each other, one 01" said bracket members having an opening for the reception of a bolt for securing said bracket to the downturned end portion of said cross supporting member, the other of said blfiOliG't member having a pair of spaced vertical openings formed therein, a slide shoe comprising a substantially flat elongated body having identical upturned opposite end porti'ons and having vertical openings respectively located equi-distant from the transverse median line of the body of the side shoe at opposite sides of the latter, and adapted to register with the vertical openings in the second member of the bracket, bolts extending through the registering openings of the body of the side shoe and the second member of the brackets, and nuts in threaded engagement with said bolts and adapted to be tightened to clamp said second member of the bracket onto the body of the side shoe.
3. A slide shoe having a substantially flat body cast in a single piece and formed with upturned end portions and with reinforcing web portions connecting said upturned end portions with the remainder of the body, said body having a pair of vertical openings formed therein and respectively located at opposite sides of the transverse median line of the body in the longitudinal median line of the body and equi-distant from the trans verse median line of the body, and means engageable with said vertical openings in the slide shoe body for connecting the latter with an end portion of a cross member of a road grader.
4. A slide shoe having a substantially flat body cast in a single piece and formed with upturned end portions and with reinforcing web portions connecting said upturned end portions with the remainder of the body, said body having a pair of vertical openings formed therein and respectively located at opposite sides of the transverse media-n line of the body in the longitudinal median line of the body and equidistant from the transverse median line of the body, a bracket comprising two platelike portions extending at right angles to each other, one of said plate-like portions being adapted to be superimposed on the body of the slide shoe and having openings adapted to register with the vertical openings in the body of the slide shoe, the other member of the bracket having an opening therethrough intermediate its ends, the members of said bracket being stayed to each other by an integral reinforcing web lying in the plane of the ransverse median line of the bracket, fastening devices engaging the walls of the registering openings in said first member of the bracket for clamping the first member of the bracket onto the side shoe, and means engageable with the wall of the opening in the second member of the bracket for connecting the bracket with an end portion of the cross member of the body of a road grader.
