. J. ANDERSON WRENCH Filed Oct. 21 1924 Patented 16, 1926.
UNllTE-D STA'FES &
JOHN ANDERSON, OF LINCOLN, KAESAS.
WRENCH.
Application filed. October 21, 1924. Serial No. 744.941.
T 0 (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that JOHN ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lincoln and State of Kansas, has invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a wrench suitable both for use in the removal of nuts and for operation on pipes and to provide a means for quick adjustment to suit the various sizes of nuts and pipes within a specified range! With this purpose in view, the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrate-d in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar View showing the position of the parts in the adjustment of the same showing the jaw element 2 tilted in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is an edge view.
Figure 4 is a transverse view on the plane indicated by the line 4 -4 of Figure 1. Figure 5 is an enlarged detail view of the jaw elements where they are connected together, showing the slot 9 and the stud 5, the stud being in section.
The cooperating jaw elements 1 and 2 are formed as lateral projections respectively of the handle elements 3 and 4:, the latter being pivotally connected by means of a fulcrum stud 5 on which the handle elements are secured by means of washers 7 engaged by the peened over extremities 6 of the fulcrum stud. The stud is thus secured in the handle element 4: and pivotally supports the handle element 3, the body portion of the stud engaging in spaced notches 8 formed in the side edge of a slot 9 in and extending longitudinally of the handle element 3.
The body portion 10 of the stud is cross sectio'nally oval with the major diameter disposed transversely of the handle elements, so that when the jaws are in parallelism, the body portion of the stud may be engaged in a selected notch 8 with the remote end bearing against the straight edge of the slot so as to provide for pivotal movement of the jaw to permit their separating to secure a new hold on the work as the tool is oscillated in the operation of the device.
The jaw 2 has a shoulder portion 11 abut-ting one edge of the handle element 3 to limit the jaw to a position of parallisin 'with the jaw l and in the adjustment of the device, the jaw 2 may be swung at an angle of divergence with the jaw 1 until the inclined wall 12 abuts the edge of the handle ele1nent 3, when the stud will be disengaged from the notch and arranged with the major diameter of the body port-ion at an angle such that the stud may he slid longitudinally of the slot without engaging any of the notches and when opposite the selected notch may be madelto enter the same by swinging the jaw 2 back to a position or Jaralleli with the jaw 1.
In the adjustment of the device, the inclined bottom edge 12 of the jaw 2 or rlanping the handle element 3 and bearing against the edge of the latter, and the bOC v portion 10 of the studbearing against tlie straight edge of the slot on which it then has a slide bearing, provide for the ready movement of the two handle elements without the liklihood of the stud engaging in any of the notches until opposite the selected notch, whenthe relative rocking of the two handle elements effects the desired engag ment. In the use of the device on pipes, sufiicient pivotal movement is provided by the engagement of thebody port-ion of the stud in selected notch'to permit firm gripping of the pipe by the serrations 14 formed on the facing edges of the jaws.
The extremities of the handle elements 8 and fl are disposed in overlapping relation to permit them readily being grasped by the hand and the remote extremity of the handle element 3 is tapered to a sharp edge to provide a screwdriver bit 15 which may be used with the jaws 1 and 2 serving as a handle when grasped in the hand.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is A wrench comprising cooperating jaw members both having handle elements, one of which elements is provided with a longitudinally disposed elongated slot with one straight edge and with the other edge provided with spaced notches, and a stud having a body portion or" substantiallyelliptical form in cross section with its major diam ter disposed transverselyiot' the lme nt when the jaws are in parallelism, said body portion of the stud being adapted to selectively engage in any one of the spaced notches, the jaw member which is a part oil ill.
portion of the slucl in such position being disengaged from the notches and with the major diameter of the stud at an inclination to and having a sliding homing on the straight edge of the slot.
In testimony whereof he aflixes his signa ture.
JOHN ANDERSON.
