- Patented 8, 19 25.
FILING RECEPIACLE Application filed November 20, 192%.
7 have invented. certain new and useful Tmprovements in Filing Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a filing receptacle and has for its obiect to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a receptacle of such class, having means to form a combined index, letter folder and envelope, whereby one can expeditiously file for future reference letters, papers, data, memoranda, etc., or whereby quick Or convenient access or reference can be had to the matters contained therein when occasion requires.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a filing receptacle, such as a combined index, letter folder and envelope, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, thoroughly etlicient and convenient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a perspective view of a recep-- tacle, in accordance with this invention, and with the envelope closed.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the receptacle and with the envelope opened and the index extended.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3, Figure 2.
Figure at is a section on line it-4E, Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a perspective View of a modified form and with the envelope open.
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6, Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary View, in section, of another modified form.
Referring to Figures 1 to 4 of the drawings, the receptacle comprises a rectangular back 1, of any desirable length and width and which has its top formed at one side thereof with a lengthwise extending projec- Serial No. 751,089.
tion or tab 2, to receive suitable designatory indicia 8 to indicate the subject, individual, company, firm or corporation for which the receptacle is employed. Each end of the back 1, at the lower portion thereof, is formed with a pair of oppositely extending flaps 4, 5. which preferably are of a length slightly greater than half the width of the back 1, and the latter provides what may be termed an index or indicator. The indicia 3 is placed on the projection 2 at the front face thereof.
Arranged forwardly of the lower portion of the back 1, as well as formed integral with the lower terminus of said back 1, is a vertically disposedand rectangular fold 6 providing one of the sides of an envelope. Each end terminal portion of the side 6 is of greater height than the height'of the intermediate part of said side and of the same height as a flap 4 or 5, and the said flaps overlap'the said end terminal portions which are indicated at 7, 8. Arranged rearwardly of the side 5 is a fold forming the other side 9 of the envelope, and which is of a greater width than the intermediate portion of the side 6. The fold which forms the side 9 is integral with the end terminal portion 7 of the side 6, and said fold extends to a point in close proximity to the bend between the flap 4 and the back 1. Formed integral with the side 9 is a flap 10 adapted to overlap the outer face of the side 6. The fiap 10 is of tapered contour and when extended has its free edge positioned a substantial distance below the upper edge of the back 1.
The folds 4 and 5 are secured to the outer faces of the end terminal portions 7 and 8 of the side 6. The sides 6 and 9, in connection with the flap 10 provide an envelope having one end closed by the bend 11 between the end terminal portion 7 and side 9, and its other end closed by the bend 12 between the flap 4 and back 1.
The back 1 not only provides an index or indicator, but the lower portion thereof 1n connection with the side 9 of the envelope forms a pocket 13 or letter folder. The bottom of the compartment 14 formed by the envelope, is closed by the bend 15 between the back 1 and the fold which provides the side 6. The fold which forms the side 9 has its lower edge positioned in proximity to the bend 15.
The flap 10 is detachably secured in closed position by a flexible retaining member 16,
which is secured at one end to an eyelet 17 attached to the flap 10, and said eyelet 17 couples a flexible disk 18 against the outer face of the flap 10. The flexible member 16 is adapted to engage around an eyelet 19, inwardly of a flexible coupling disk 20. The latter is secured against the outer face of the side 6 by the eyelet 19.
Referring to Figures 5 and 6 of the drawings, 21 denotes a rectangular back of any desirable length and width and which has its top formed, at one side thereof, with a lengthwise extending projection or tab 22 to receive suitable desia'natory indicia to indicate the subject, individual, company, firm or corporation for which the receptacle is employed. Each end of the back 21, is formed with a pair of oppositely extending flaps 23, 2 1.
Integral with the lower terminus of the back 21 and arranged forwardly thereof is an upwardly extending fold 25, which provides the forward side of an envelope formed with a plurality of compartments, and the bend 26 between the fold 25 and back 21 provides a bottom common to the several compartments of the envelope.
Arranged against the forward face of the back 21. as well as being of materially greater height than said back 21 is a vertically disposed partition 27, which is integral with one end of the fold 25 and forming the rear side or back wall of the compartment envelope. The said partition member 2? is constructed to provide a clo sure flap 28, foldable on the score 29 and which constitutes a closure, common to the several compartments of the envelope. When the flap 28 is in closure position the back '21 extends above the envelope.
Positioned between the fold 25 and the partition member 27 is a series of partition . members 31, 32 and 33. The member 31 projects a substantial distance above the fold 25 and terminates a substantial distance above the bend 26. The member 32 projects a substantial distance above the member'31 and terminates at a point a substantial distance above the bottom edge of the member 31, and the member 33 projects a substantial distance above the member 32 and terminatesa substantial distance above the bottom edge of the member 32. The projecting portion of the member 31 is indicated at 3 1, that of the member 32 at 35, and that of the member 33 at 36, and the said projecting portions can be provided with suitable indicia or indicating means to designate the purpose for which the compartments 37, 38 and 39 are used. The member 27, below the score 29, can also be provided with suitable indicia or indications to designate the purpose for which the compartment 10 is used.
Theside portions of-the' fold 25 and members 31, 32 and 33 are of greater height than the intermediate portion thereof and said flaps 23 and 24: are secured by suitable adhesive material to the said side portions, and the bends of the flaps s3 and 2&- close the ends of the several compartments. The partition members are connected together in any suitable manner at their ends, and the partition member 31 is connected in any suitable nuinner to the fold v Any suitable means can be employed for connecting: the flap 28 to the fold for the purpose of closing the several compartments. it means similar to that shown in Figure 1 can be employed if desired.
The member 27, in connection with the back 21 provides a pocket or a letter folder, as indicated at 11. Letters can be filed between the member 2"? and the back 21.
The modification as illustrated in Figure 1 discloses a bellows or expansible type of envelope, as indicated at 12.
It is thoughtthat the many advantages of a tilingreceptacle in accordance with this invention can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiments of the invention are as illustrated and described, yet changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
