HAIR CLIPPER.
Application filed October 30, 1924. Serial No. 746,816.
To all who/1t it may concer/n Be it known that I, DUsHAN S. Snnrn Lrroi-I, a. subject of the Kingdom of the Serbs, Greats, and Slovenes, residing at lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Clippers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hair clip ners and has for one of its objects to provice a hair cli ping device wherein one blade is slidab y associated with another blade with the operating handles for the sliding blades projecting outwardly from one face thereof to remove the operating handles from the immediate vicinity of the cutting edges of the clipper blades and to permit unrestricted and free use of the clipper.
Another object of the invention is to provide a. novel mounting for the sliding blade of the clipper above described, a pair of pivotally supported handles being detach-` ably connected to a block with one of the handles detaehably connected to the sliding blade and cooperating with the other handle as an abutment therefor to effect the sliding movement of the blade.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an interlocking connection between the two blades with a spring device for normally holding one of the blades in .its limit of sliding movement in one direction and having an operating handle detachably connected to the sliding blade to effect sliding movement thereof and the cutting operation of theclippers.
lith the above an-d other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying draving and claimed.

Referring more in det-ail to the accompanying drawing, and particularly to Fig. 6l there is illustrated a cutting blade 1, preferably-rectangular in plan view having side ianges 2 provided with a serrated edge forming 4cutting beads 3 while the central portion of the bladell has a rectangular opening 4 that is undercut or beveled as at 5` as illustrated by dotted lines. The upper face of the blade 1 has an arcuate longitudinally extending groove 6 having one end opening at an end wall'of the opening 4 while the other end thereof terminates at the corresponding end ofthe blade 1.
A block 7 of the form best illustrated in Fig. 7 includesa base portion 8, a perpendicular end wall 9 an-d an upper overhanging wall 10 positioned above the base 8. Alined openings 11 are formed in the base 8 and upper overhanging wall 10 while the perpendicular endwall 9 is provided with an opening 12 as clearly shown. The block 7 is inserted upwardly thru the lower side of the opening 4 in the bla/de 1 and the base portion 8 of said block is beveled as at 8fL for engaging Athe undercut or beveled edge 5 of the wall vof the opening 4with the lower face of the base portion 8 lying flush with the lower face of the blade 1 as clearly shown in Fig. 4. A coil spring 13 is placed in the groove 6Y with one end thereof received in the opening 12 ofthe block 7, lthe opening 12 having a flanged wall to form an abutment for said spring as shown fin Fig.l 4. The sliding blade 14 shown in detail in Fig. 5 has the opposite vside edges thereof -flang'ed `as at 15 and serrated to provide cutting teeth 16,
the lianges l5 datly engaging the flanges 2 upon the cutting blade 1. A `relatively large elongated rectangular opening 17 is formed in the blade 14, one end wall of the opening 14 carrying a centrally located lug projection 18 while the other end wall of said opening is recessed as at 19. The blade 14 is positioned upon the blade 1 with the opening- 17 in the blade 14 receiving the block 7. The outer end of the coil spring 13 is received in the recess 19 and the blade 14 is manually shifted longitudinally of the blade 1 against the tension of the spring y13 to position the lug 18 for engagement with the adjacent edge of the base portion 8 of the block 7, this connection between the two blades holding the blade 14 tensioned at its limit of movement in one direction while the block 7 forms .an interlocking connection be tween the two blades.
A pair of yoperating handles. is provided for moving the sliding blade 14 over the blade l, the handle 2.0 being carried by a pair of arms 2l that are connected at their free ends by a cross roller 22 that is posi-A tioned between the upper cverlianging wall 10 and the base portion 8 of the block 9 and in engagement with the curved face .91 of the vertical end wall 9 of the block.. The upper sides ofthe 2l adjacent the .cross toller 22 are provided with can; faces .2lil as clean ly shown in Fig. 2. When the roller 22 is positioned in the block 7 the handle 21 is moved to initially occupy a position adjacent the outei` end of the spring 13 as shown in Fig. 4, The other handle 23 carries a pair of side arms 24 that are connected at their free ends by jcurnaled blockl 2.5 that has a latch blade 26 lixedto the lower side thereof as shown in Figs. 4 and 8- In mounting the handle 23, the' forward end of the latch blade 26 dis disposed beneath the roller 22 andv extends thru the convolutions of the coil spring 13 as shown in Fig, 4 while the rear end of the latch blade 2,6 carries a latch lug 27 upon the lower face thereof that snaps into the recess 28 formed in the upper face of the adjacent end of the slidingblade .14, the extreme inner end of the latch blade .26 being provided with an opening 29 to. receive e suitable implement to facilitate removal of the latch lug 2 7 from the blade opening 28. The upper ends of the handle anrns 24 adjacent the block 2.5 are provided with cani faces 242IL similar to the cani faces 2l* upon the handle arms 2l.
With the several parts ofthe clipper as.- seinbled as illustrated lligse l to d, .the handles 2l 23 are adapted to be moved toward each other, and upon engagement of the cani faces 21@ and 24?., the'adia-ccnt ends of the' arms 21 are separated. and view'cf tlie latch blade connection between handle and-sliding `blade lil.; l the letter shifted ,overt-lie blade lts canse* andata relative te a cli and The device is extremely simple in construction and operation and embodies comparatively few parts, that may be readily re placed should damage or injury result thereto, it being noted that any preferred material may be employed in the manufacture thereof as well as in the general design, and while there is herein shown and described the preferred ,embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

In a hair clipper, a pair of blades, one being slidable relative to the other, a spring for holding the sliding blade at ,its limit of movement in one'directioll, a pair of pivoted handles, a detachable connection between the handles and slidingblade, and means rendegred active upon the movement of the handles to separate the pivot point-s of the handles and operate the lsliding blade.

In a hair clipper, a pair of blades, one being slidable relative to the other, there being registeringopenings in said blades, a block in said openings, a spring interposed bet-Ween the block and an end Wall of the opening in the sliding blade for holding the latter at its limit of movement in one direction, aI pair of handles pivotally supported in the block, cooperating cam faces on the handles and a latch blade carried by one of the handles and detaehably connected to the sliding blade whereby movement of the handles Will canse the cam faces to separate the pivot points of the handles and operate the sliding blade.
