This? invention relates to `golf clubs, and particularly to the means for connecting the metal facing plate to the tace of the club head.` ,i

A further `object is to provide a means tor fasteningthe metal facing plateto the head face which will ,permit the ready attachment of the faceplate whenever it is de sired todo so but Ywhich will securely hold the faceplate in place while the club is in: use, thisconstruction being such that-it will not affect in any Way the use ot the club or' changey its balance.

Referring to these drawings, designates the head of a golf club such, for instance, as a brassie or drivel', this head 10 being provided with theusual` handle,the shank ot' which is designated 11, the head 10 being formed with `a downwardly andyoutwardly inclined tace 12, the under face 130i the head being slightly rounded, as is usual.

For' the purpose of' connecting the, face plate 14 to the head of the club, I provide this face plate 14, which may be made ot any suitable metal, with inwardly projecting studs 15, these studs having enlarged heads 16 at their inner ends. The body of the club is formed with a longitudinally eX- tending bore 17 which is parallel to the face 12 ot' the club and which opens upon the end of the club head, this bore 17 being connected to the face of the club by passages 17a, the outer end of the bore being counterbored or slightly enlarged, as

For `thepurpose, of drawing the locking member 19,1` into its" locking position or shifting it from its lockingposition, I provide in the'eounterbore 18 a ,bushing or` lining .member 22 havinga central bore 23 with a member 19.

Thusit will be seen that by turning up this screw, the locking member may be drawn longitudinally so as to lock the pins 15 and prevent any detachment or displace ment of the plate 14, and that by turning the screw 25 in the reverse direction the locking member will be shifted longitudinally to release the stud 15 andpermit the removal of the plate.

I do not wish to be limited to any par-y ticular material for the4 various parts illust-rated, nor to the exact construction, as it is obvious that these might be varied in. many ways without departing from the spirit of the invention. l

I claim 1. In a golf club having a head, a face plate for the head having inwardly extending members, and a locking member disposed within the club and; movable longitudinally therethrough and adapted, when shifted in one direction, to lockingly engage said inwardly directed members and, when shifted in the other direction, to release said inwardly directed members.

2. In a golf club, a face plate therefor having inwardly projecting studs, the club having a longitudinally extending bore with passages extending from the bore outward to the face of the club, the face. plate having inwardly projecting, headed studs adapted to be extended through said passages and into said bore, and a locking member disposed within the bore and longitudinally shiftable to engage the headed studs and lock the plate against the face of the club or unlock the plate to permit its removal.

In a golf club, a face plate therefor having inwardly projecting studs, the club having a longitudinally extending bore with passages extending from the vbore outward to the face of the club, the face. plate having inwardly projecting, headed studs adapted to be extended through said passages and into saidy bore, locking means disposed within the bore in the head comprising a hollow member' longitudinally shiftable within the head and having keyhole slots through which the headed studs are adapted to project, and manually operable means disposed in one end of the bore whereby the hollow member may be longitudinally shifted and held in its shifted position.

In a golf club, a face plate therefor having inwardly projecting studs, thevclub 'i' having a longitudinally extending bore with passages extending from the bore outward to the face of the club, the face plate havf ing inwardly projecting headed studs adapted to be extended through said passages and into said bore, locking means disposed within the bore in the head comprising a hollow member longitudinally shiftable within the head and having keyhole slots through which theheaded studs are adapted to project, a bushing disposed in the outer end of the bore and having a central opening, and a screw passing through the central opening and having screw-threaded engagement withone end of the hollow member whereby the hollow member may be longitudinally shifted.

5. A golf club having therein a longitudinally extending bore, the outer' end of the bore being enlarged, there being passages extending from the bore outward to theV face of the club, a Vface plate having inwardly extending headed studs insertible through said passages, means for locking the face plate in place comprising a tubular member disposed within said bore and formed on one face with keyhole slots, the side walls of the narrow portions of the keyhole slots being wedge-shaped to engage said heads and draw the plate inward as the locking member is shifted longitudinally, means for shifting the locking member comprising a bushing disposed within the enlarged end of the bore and having a central aperture, and a screw passing through .the central aperture and having screw-threaded engagement with one end of the hollow member.

6. In a golf club, a face plate having inwardly directed studs, the golf club having a longitudinally extending bore, and passages leading from the chamber to that face of the club against which the face plate is disposed and the studs extending Athrough said passages into said bore, a longitudinally shiftable locking member disposed within the bore and `in one position lockingly engaging the studs and in another position permitting the release of the studs from their engagement,and means disposed adjacent one end of the club whereby the locking member may be shifted longitudinally.
