S. Q. FRENCH WINDOW LOCK Filed Jqne 27I 1924 Patented Aufg. 18, 1925.
SHERMANVQ. FRENCH, 0F HAVIARDEN, IOWA.
WINDOW LOCK.
Application filed June 27, 1924.
.To @ZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l, SHERMAN Q. FnnNcH, a citizen of the United States, residing' Hawarden7 in the county of Sioux and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use` ful Improvements in a lilindow liocln of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in window locks and has rcf erence more particularly to a device which is adapted to be associated with a sliding' window for holding` the same in any desired. adjusted position with respect to the window frame, thereby obviating the necessity of employing the usual weights and sash cords.
Another important object `ot the invention is to provide a window lock of the above mentioned character, which may be readily and easily actuated for locking or unlockingl the window as is desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a window lock of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, stronp; and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawingforming' a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation f of a window with the lower portion thereof shown in section and illustratingthe manner in which my improved window lock is associated therewith, the same being in locked position.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary edge elevational view of the window showing the poclret arranged therein, and
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the bloc-ks.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a window which is of the sliding;1 type and as the same may be of any conventional construction, a further detailed description thereof is not thought necessary. The window frame in which the window is adapted for slidable movement is designated at 2 in the drawing. Provided in the bottom vwith reference more particularly to Finn Serial No. 722,755.
Extending around the eccentrics 10 and 11 respectively are the enlarged inner ends of the rods 13 and 1li respectively. The inner ends of the rods are of such construction as to lit around the periphery of the eccentrics and the outer ends of the rods are each provided with the reduced portion 15. The rods extend from the eccentrics in opposite direction into the transversely extending` openings 16 and 17 respectively7 the same extendingr from the enlarged annular .recess i to the opposite side edges of the window 1 and communicate with the cut out portions or pockets 18 arranged in the side edges of the window sash.
Extending; longitudinally in the transversely extendingV recesses are the tubular members 19 and 2O respectively and the innerends thereof are adapted to receive the reduced portion of the rods 13 and 11i in the manner more clearly illustrated in Figure 1. The outer ends of the tubular members carry Y thereon the heads 21 which are adapted to operate in the pockets 18 in the manner also hereinafter to be more fully described.
Seated in the pockets 18 provided in the side edges ot the window sash 1 and adapted for engagement with the jamb of the window frame 2 are the blocks Q2. The blocks are preferably formed of wood and for the purpose of preventing the head 21 on the outer ends of the tubular members from detacing the blocks, the inner faces of the blocirs are provided with the metallic plates such as is shown at 23 whereby heads 2l will engage the metallic plates when moring the blocks into engagement with the jambs otl the window' frame.
il/*hen the parts are arranged as shown in Figure l of the drawing, the blocks 22 are moved outwardly from the pockets and into engagement with the jambe of the window trame whereby the window sash is held in any desired adjusted' position. Wlhen it becomes necessary to raisefor lower the window, as the case may necessitate, the lrnob or handle 9 is rotated so as to cause the eccentrics ll and 12 to retract the tubular inembers through the medium of the rods 13 and l whereby the blocks 22 will not bind against the jambs of the window frame and permit the free sliding movement of the window sash.
The provision ot a window lock of the character above described will obviate the necessity of having to employ the usual` ciated therewith. The simplicity ot-my device enables the saine to be readily installed on windows o'lr the sliding types now in use and will further be inexpensive, yet strong and durable and positive in its operation.
li'lhile l have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changesy in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing Jfrom the spirit ot the in- 1vention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim is in a window retaining device of the kind specilied, an oscillatory shaft provided with a handle, eccentrics carried by said shaft, mounting means 'for said shaft, a pair oi rods extending in opposite directions and provided at their inner ends with concentric ring-lille head surrounding said eccentrics, a
tube into which each rod telescopes, a head on the 'outer end of each tube, and a metal Afaced block forming a brakeshoe, said head bearing against the facing.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature.
S. Q. FRENCH.
