Be it known that l,J0sErH JONES, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State o' New JerseLv, have invented an Improvement in Mitering-lllaehines, ot' which the tollowing is a specitieation:
This invention relates to the construction oi' mitering-machines, which mawY he used t'or shootilig-boards, similar to those patented to me February 20, ltt, and January l, i871.

The plane A has a rib or tongue, u, on its lower side, ot'dovetailed or other suitable form, engaging' with a corresponding `groove iu the rest or support l, formed directly in the upper side of said rest, instead of in an intermediate plate. Instead of being;` stationary, the rest or support l5 is pivoted at the rear end, so that when in a horizontal position it is about on a level with the top of the main frame ofthe machine, upon which the hedplate rests. The t'ront end is provided with a bolt, b, the inner end ot` which works in a slot, e, in the side o1' the main frame (l ot' the machine, and the outer portion passes through the rest or support, and is provided with a thumb-nut, b2, for clamping it in an)v desired position.
When the machine is used for dressing thin stuft', in order to render the wear upon the face and hit as unitorm as possible, and prevent the formation ot' grooves or notches therein, the rest or support is inclined downward, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, so as to cause the hit to operate upon the stuttl with a shear-eut motion, and cause a uniform wear upon it and the face of the plane.
ln the present invention, the bed-plate ,E is supported by two hars, D 1), one near each end. The upper ends ot` the bars are pivoted to lugse e, tormcd on the rear edge of the bedplate, or attached thereto, the hars bein g' t'ormed with slots extending' for nearly their entire length, which slots engage with a bar, (nl, having' its hearings in lugs el, formed on the rear side ol' the main frame U. Une end ot' the har has a head, g, termed with a ril) or tongue, which engages with the slot, alnl on the inner side ot' the lug e2 nearest to said head is a spring', q'-,whieh serves to keep said head engaged with said slot, and also prevents the hed-plate t'rom falling` with a too sudden motion. 0n the outer end ot' the har G is a screwthread provided with a thumonnt, y. \\"hen the bed-plate is raised to an inclined position, as shown in dotted lilies in liig. 4, it is held at the desired point b v means ot' the rod (i, with its head y and nut y) pressing' against the, hars l) and lugs el, and clamping' theni in position. The front edge ot` the hedplate is connected to the main trame (t h v means ot' curved slotted hars or plates Il, having their upper ends rigidly attached to the umler side otthe hed-plate, and their curved slotted portions passing through slots in blocks J, attached to the trame C, with pins passing; through the enrved slots for the purpose of guiding' them. The blocks J are capable of adjustment toward or from the t'ront edge ofthe frame, and are held in place by means ot1 set-screws i. Illy means ot' these devices, the bedplate is so adjusted that when it is in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 4, the trout edge does not extend ha youd the t'ront edge ot' the t'rame, but retains its position tlush with said front edge, so as not to interfere with the operation ot' the plane, and is thus seenrelbY locked to the bed plate. At one end ot' the upper portion ot' the frame (l is a semieircular horizontal extension, K, having;- a scale, li', marked on its tace near its edge. This extension serves not only as a gage, but also as a support for a pivoted head or rest t'or the work, and a means for holding' the same in position.
The head or rest i'or the work consists of a skeleton frame, L, with a horizontal hase resting' upon the semieireular extension l', and pivoted thereto so as to oscillate in a horizontal plane. The horizontal base extends beyond the edge otthe extension K, and connects hy a thumb-screw, I, with a block, (2, formed with ai tongue or rih. i", projecting' under the exten sion K, by which menus the head or rest is elzunped und held in desired positions. 1t is provided with a pointer to indieate the desired degree upon the seule, and is pivoted at the renter ot' the selnieirenlar extension N, und is so arranged that it nnty oseillate in both direc tions, and muy he adjusted at any degree within a eireuit of about three-quarters ot' a eirele, hy whieh ineens the work nuty have its ends dressed at any desired angle with relation to its length. \\'hen the head li is adjusted at other than '.1` right angle with the front edge ot' the t'ranxe and hed-plate, there is neeessariljY an open space between its end and the t'aee ot' the plane, so that no rest is provided for the end ot' ver)Y thin or very narrow n utterial.
