Be it known that I, EARL G. STEADMAN,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Martins Ferry, in the county of Belmont and `State of Ohio, have invented 'certain new and useful Improvements in a Cash Drawer, of which the following is a Specification.

The present invention relates to improve ments in cash drawers.

At the present time it is the common 'custom to remove all coins, paper money. checks. and other valuable papers from the cash drawer and place them in bags or other containers so as to be stored in a safe when the cash drawer is not in use. This procedure consumes considerable time and causes mistakes to be made and often the loss of money.

It is the principal object of the present invention to overcome these difficulties` in the practice now commonly in vogi'ie by providing a portable and folding cash 'drawer which may be readily removed from its support and placed with its contents in a` safe.

Another important obj ect of the invention is to pro-vide a foldable and portable cash drawer of this naturesuch as may be securely held in place on a support such as a desk or shelf when in'use andfwhen 'not in use may be folded and easily carried from place to 30 place and storedas maybe desired.

Another important object of the invention is to provide a. plurality of drawers having a novel structure for supportingthe v'contents thereof when the devic'ei's in 'an operative or folded position.

A still further important object of the invention is to generally improve upon a device of this nature by providing a simple and efficient construction, one which will be reliable in operation, inexpensive to manufacture, durable, attractive in appearance, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.

With the above and numerous other objects in view which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the device includes a pair of casinpfs A and B which are hinged together at their ends on their bottom sides as at 5 so that one casing will be foldable over the other as is illustrated by the dotted line structure in Figure 6. Suitable means such as an ordinary hasp 6 is utilized for holding the two casings in folded position. Each casing` is provided at its forward end with a handle. 7 85 and it is to be noted that these handles regis ter with each other when the device is folded as is indicated in Figure 6 whereby the device may be readily 4carried from place to place as may be desired. Each casingis provided at its free end with an extension 8 that is provided with a hole or opening 9. rlhese extensions 8 are adapted to be supported by the brackets 10 which are fixed to a support 11 in spaced relation to each other 95 as is indicated in Figure 1.

This support may be the top of a desk, a shelf, or any other suit-able means to which the ordinary cash drawer is usually attached. A locking mechanism is provided. for holding the casings in place in relation to the brackets 10 and as indicated in Figure 3 this locking mechanism merely consists of a spring arm 12 attached at one end to the vertical portion of the bracket 10 and 105 its other end is provided with a bolt 13 eX- tending through an aperture in this vertical portion of the bracket 10 and adapted, also, to extend into the opening 9 on the eX- tension 8 supported by this bracket. Thus 11u it will be seen that the device may be held securely in place while being used and when desired may be easily removed and released from the bracket 10.

The casing A is constructed with a plurality of compartments F in its upper portions for receiving the comparatively small drawers G which have been designed for holding valuable papers and the like. These drawers G are preferably constructed with slanting bottoms 15, that slant upwardly toward the rear thereof and the rear portion of these drawers are covered by a panel 16. The bottom portion of the casing A is constructed to receive the change drawer 6 which is constructed with a plurality of compartments as is shown to advantage in Figure 8 for receiving coins of various denominations. Each of these compartments is constructed in a similar manner being provided with a slanting bottom 17 extending upwardly toward the rear of the drawer and the rear portions of these compartments are covered by a panel 18. The purpose of these slanting bottoms 15 and 17 and the panels 16 and 18 is to prevent the coins and the like from falling from the compartments when the drawer is removed from the support 11. For example when the casings A. and B are disposed in a carrying or vertical position the coins in the compartment in the drawer C would roll to the rear or bottom thereof which rear portions or bottom portions are closed by the panels 18. IVhen the drawer was disposed in a horizontal position the coins would immediately roll to the forward portions of the compartment so as to be readily accessible. The drawer C is provided at its front end 19 with the extension 2O that would close the compartments F containing the drawers G and if desired a suitable lock 21 maj)7 be associated therewith.

The casing B is constructed with a pair of ledges 22 at each side thereof so that the two drawers D and E may be disposed therein. The drawer E is disposed in the upper portion of the casing B while the drawer D is disposed in the lower portion thereof. The drawer E is preferably used for small bills while the drawer D is used for larger bills. The drawer D is provided with an offset extension 23 at its front end for overlapping the front end of the drawer E so that when the drawer E is opened the drawer D will be opened thereby asis indicated to advantage in Figure 9. The drawer D is preferably constructed with a suitable locking device 9A which when locked will retain the drawer E in a locked position also as is evident.

Although I have described my invention to some degree of particularity it is to be understood that the preferred embodiment which I Vhave illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in detailk in this specification merely has been given by way of example and that numerous changes in the details of construction and in the com-A bination and arrangement of parts mayT be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as hereinafter claimed.

I-Iaving thus described my invention what I claim as new'is As a new article of manufacture, a drawer including a frame forming a compartment therein having a slant'fng bottom rising toward the rear end of the frame, and aY panel on the frame yextending over the rear end of the compartment so as to form a pocket in the compartment.
