E. BRUNHOFF DISPLAY AND VENDING APPARATUS Fild Aug. 8, 1923 Patented Nov. d, M924.
DISPLAY .AND VENDENG AEPARATUS.
Application filed August S, 1923.
To il/ZZ whom t m ay concern Be it known that l, EDWARD lnunnorr, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain nen1 and useful improvements in Display and `rVending Apparatus, of which the following` is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in display and vending apparatus. @ne of its objects is to provide an improved lid with a transparent panel adapted to be applied to original containers, as for instance cigar boxes, to display the goods, to protect the goods from dust and dirt, and to prevent undue escape of moisture fromthe goods while on display. Another object is to provide improved means to detachably attach a transparent lid to an original package to provide a relativelyT tight joint, and to enable the transparent lid to be readily ree moved from one original package to another as soon as the goods have been vended therefrom. Another object is to provide an improved detachable lid apparatus adapted to be attached to sheet metal original packages. `Another object is to provide improved means to hinge the transparent lid and support it from the original package, and to limit its range of movement so as to prevent liability of the weight of the transparent lid upsetting or overturning the original cmltainer due to movements of the transparent lid changing the disposition of the weight and center of gravity. My invention also comprises certain details of form, and combination and arrangement of components, all of which will be fully set forth lin the description of the accompany ing drawings, in which;
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of anv original container of sheet metal type with my improved transparent and detachable lid applied thereto.
Fig, 2 is a sectional detail showing the transparent lid at the limit of its raised position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the transparent lid detached, and before it is hinged to its supportingmember.
Fig. l is a sectional detail similar to F 2, with the transparent lid in closed position.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of substan- -month of the containerv 15.
Serial No. 558,425,
tially one half of the transparent lid detachable supportingI member.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention in which 15 epresents an original container or package, as for instance a sheet metal cigar bei; provided with a lid of sheet metal attached thereto by means of a series of hinge eyes formed integral with the box or container, a series of hinge eyes 17 formed integral with the lid 18, and a hinge axle 19.
The detachable lid comprises a panel 20 of glass or other transparent material of substantially the size to cover ythe open .il frame 21 of sheet metal is formed about the panel 20, preferably from a channel shaped strip of sheet metal, which is mitered at the corners and bent at the corners and iitted to the edges of the panel 20, with the ends of said strip soldered together where they meet at one corner of the panel .20. A light narrow sheet metal frame is thus per manently attached to the panel 20. Along one edge of the sheet metal frame .21 are soldered or otherwise attached short sections of sheet metal tubing 22 to form hinge eyes. f A supporting` member, to which the panel 20 and frame 21 are to be hinged, is formed by connecting a pair of angle platesv 24tand 25 together by means of a channel shaped cross-bar 2S, to which said angle plates are soldered or otherwise rigidly attached. 1
Said angle plates 24 and 25 are designed to engage opposite corners of the container 15 adjacent to the hinge attaching the lid 18 to the container 15. Each of said angle plates has a section 30 to engage the rear outer face of the container 15, and to pass between the rear wall ofthe container 15 and the hinge eye 17 at the extreme end of the hinge aXle 19. Each of said angle plates is provided with a face 31, provided by folding the metal of the angle plates upon themselves, which faces 31 engage the exterior of the boX at the sides thereof. Extending inwardly from the sides 31 of the angle plates are tongues 32 which hook over the upperv edge of the sides of the box, and embrace the side of the box between said tongue 32 and the face 31. The angle plates 24 and 25 and the cross bar 28 are thus iirinly but detachably mounted upon the upper edge of the box in front of the open ocx lid i8. The angle plates 24: and and cross har 28 may be made to lit boxes o'il different dimeiisions by changing the length of the cross-bar 28. plurality of sheet metal tube sections are rigidly attached to the cross-bar 28 to constitute hinge eyes by means of which and a hinge axle 36 the transparent lid 2O is pivotally attached to the cross-bar 28 ot the snpporting member'. The cross-bar 28 serves to limit the pivotal movement of the trans parent lid 20 from a snbstantialiy horizontal closed position to a substantially vertical open position. and thereby prevents the center or" gravity of the lid 20 being shifted far enough rearwardly to cause the box to be upset or overturned thereby.
rlhe narrow sheet metal frame 2l and manner of hinging the same to the crossbar 2S enables the panel 20 to be madev large enough to display substantially all of the goods Within the box, and enables Atransparent lids of different sizes to be conveniently and economically produced without requiring separate sets of dies for the various sizes. The entire attachment to the original package is compact, strong, of pleasing appearance, firmly mounted relative to the original package` and conveniently produced in a variety of sizes without the use of a large number of dies.
The apparatus herein shown and described is capable ot considerable modification without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Vhat I claim is:
l. In combination with a container having a lid permanently hinged thereto, a transparent lid to be detachably applied to said container fory display purposes while the permanent lid is in its open position, asupporting member for said transparent lid comprising a cross-bar extending across in iront of the permanent lid, angle plates at opposite ends of said cross-bar each having a plate to exteriorly embrace a side of the container and a plate to exteriorly embrace the rear o'j the container, said side engaging plates being provided with members extending over the top edge of the sides oit said container to also engage the inne 1 tace of the sides of said container and means to hinge said transparent lid to the front of said cross-bar.
2. In combination with a container having a lid permanently hinged thereto at the up-.
per rear edge ot said container, a trans parent iid to be detaohably applied to said container for display purposes while the permanent lid is in its open position, a supporting member' 'Por said transparent lid comprising a crossbar extending across the top et the rear wall oit said container in :iront oi" the hinge of said permanent lid, angle plates rigidly attached to opposite ends of said cross bar and extending downwardly therefrom one to embrace exteriorly and interiorly the side walls ot the container and the other to enter between the rear wall ot said container and a hinge eye ot said permanent lid, and means to hinge the transparent lid to the iront of said cross-bar.
3. In combination with a container having a lid permanently hinged thereto at the upper rear edge ot said container, a transparent lid to be detachably applied to said container tor display purposes while the permanent lid is in its open position, a supiriorting member for said transparent lid comprising a cross-bar extending across the top ot the rear wall of said container in iront of the hinge of said permanent lid, angle plates rigidly attached to opposite ends oit said cross bar and extending downwardly therefrom one to embrace exteriorly and interiorly the side Walls 'ofy the container and the other to enter between the rear wall of said container and a hinge eye ot said permanent lid, and means to hinge the transparent lid to the lower front edge of said cross-bar to enable the upper edge of said cross bar to serve as a stop and support for said transparent lid in the ogen position and to prevent upsetting the con tainer.
t. In combination with a container having lid permanently hinged thereto at the upper rear edge ot' said container', a transparent lid to be detachably applied to said container itor display purposes while the permanent lid is in its open position, a cross-bar of channel shaped cross-section extending across in frontot the permanent lid, angle plates at opposite' ends of said cross-bar entering between the channel arms ot said cross-bar and rigidly united to said cross bar and detachably engaging rear and side walls of the container at the upper and opposite rear corners or" said container, and a metal bound transparent lid hinged to the lower front edge of said cross-bar.
In testimony .vhereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
