To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I,,KIoHrMA'rsU MUKAI, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window- Cleaning Devices, of which the following is a specification. v

This invention relates to improvements in scrubbing devices for cleaning purposes, and has for its principal object the provision of a device whereby a window to be cleaned may be reached from the inside, without the necessity of climbing to the outside of the window.

Another object of this invention is to provide novel means for retaining the scrubbing element in a fixed position, while it is being used so that an efficient scrubbing action can be readily accomplished.

Another object is to provide means whereby one or more cleaning implements may be retained by the scrubbing device, so that not only the window pane itself may be cleaned, butthe corners, so often inaccessible may be readily reached.

An additional object is to provide a sectional scrubbing device, so that various heights of windows may be reached.

A further object is to produce a deviceof the character described, which is simple in construction, positive in action, inexpensive to manufacture and highly serviceable in use.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.

Figure 6 is a horizontal'section taken on to climb to the outside sill and clean a window from that position. NVhen this action is necessary there is always the hazard of falling, and in order to eliminate this hazard I have constructed my device, which can be readily and efficiently operated from the inside of the room with the scrubbing implement disposed outside of the room and in contact with the surface of the window pane.

In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 8 designates a sectional handle, the sections of which can be readily secured as by fastening elements 9. The handle is preferably made of wood and has secured to one extremity thereof metal arms 10 which detachably receive therebetween one end of a curved metal link 11 with the opposite end of the link detachably retained in metal arms 12 in turn secured to a wooden connecting member 13.

I propose to secure to the member 13 pair of metal yoke arms 14: which terminate in gripping discs 15. Between these grip ping discs I propose to pivotally mount a member 16 which member has provided therein a centrally disposed slot 17, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. It will be observed that the member 16 has provided on one extremity centrally bored fingers 18 and has secured to its opposite extremity a sponge holder 19.

Retained within the fingers 18 18 a hori- .zontally disposed rod 20 which has connect ed thereto jaws 21 and 22. The expansion and contraction of the jaws is controlled by the influence of coiled springs 23 and 241, the jaws being adapted to retain therebetween a scrubbing implement 25 which is preferably draped around the jaws and secured in position on the rod by spring clamps 26.

The numeral 27 designates a slotted finger which is secured to the jaw 21 and is adapted the cloth are in a position to be clamped by the elements 26. The scrubbing implement positioned outside the window is then moved along the pane of the window in parallelism thereto and the cleaning is accomplished. \Vhen it is desired to utilize the sponge in the holder 19 for cleaning out the corners of the window the position of the jaws is inverted and ready access can be had to the corners of the window for cleansing the same. 7

It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim A window cleaning device comprising a Q 7 sectional handle, yoke arms connected to sand handle and disposed in a plane substantially inparallelism to the plane of the handle, a slotted member pivoted to the yoke arms and terminating at one end in central bored I fingers, a sponge-holding element carried by the opposite end of said member a horizontal rod positioned in the fingers of said member and adapted to more freely therein, a

pair of clamping aws secured to said rod,

tension means for returning the jaws to their normally closed position, a slotted finger earned by one of said aws and adapted to travel through the slot of said member,

said jaws being adapted to retain therein a piece of fabric or the like, for the purpose specified. v
